  1. For younger gamers weaned on more current games such as "Burnout," a rental may be all you need to sate your curiosity of how things were before bump mapping and light bloom.
  2. The highlights of the compilation are "Rush 2049," "Hydro Thunder" despite its lack of depth, and "Badlands" for its loveable devotion to the top-down two-dimensional look and surprisingly fun gameplay.
  3. You're not really going to find the arcade experience here, nor are you going to find the full presentation that you may remember putting quarters in so many years ago.
  4. So many of the games included here relied so heavily on custom arcade hardware that they lose much of their appeal in the translation.
  5. You could spend hours playing Hydro Thunder and the two other Rush games alone.
  6. It's just disappointing that there are so many issues with the three main games that people are going to be interested in.
  7. In some cases, I'd have preferred to see the home console versions being ported over. Off Road Thunder for example, was a much better game on the Dreamcast than it was in the arcade.
  8. Only those trying to elicit an emotional attachment to these games are likely to get anything out of all them.
  9. So much of what made these games great has been lost simply due to the change of venue, and that is truly unfortunate.
  10. If this collection had more games and a much better presentation to go along with it, it would have been much more attractive and easily-recommended.

Slowly these titles are becoming just average compilations. Midway really need to take a break from this series; it is evident from this title that they are running out of ideas.

With MAT 3, the definition of treasure is stretched thin enough to cover the distance from, say, New York to Disappointmentvile. [Oct 2005, p.70]

Even though they used the Dreamcast version of a few of these games, that's not a bad thing and it's still a great time. Full Review »

Although the reviews are mixed, I thought this was the company's best retro offering so far. Sure, two games were altered drastically Although the reviews are mixed, I thought this was the company's best retro offering so far. Sure, two games were altered drastically from their arcade ports (SF Rush via sound, Offroad Thunder runs at 20, not 30 or 60 like it should), but this is still a great collection that should be with every arcade racing gamer's collection, particularly if you were a fan of any arcade racing game made at or after the time of OutRun. Also, it works amazingly well with a MadCatz MC2 racing wheel albeit a weird control scheme for Race Drivin'. Full Review »
