Under-use of the Marvel license, focus on style over substance and a rushed developer have ensured that Marvel Nemesis will be the turkey of the EA holiday lineup.
  2. The area where the gameplay lacks is the variety on moves, combos, and just providing ways to keep gamers interested after the smoke and mirrors of the visuals wear off.

The story mode is boring and full of repetition, the controls are overly simplistic.
  4. The graphics seem mostly unimpressive despite some quirks, and the gameplay never really meshes. Only some online options and multiplayer goodies keep this from being completely imperfect.
  5. Inarguably, it's a sucky game. Once you've taken Marvel Nemesis through its paces, you'll pierce its glinty armor with your newfound eye beams of license abuse and try to toss it into the local penitentiary for the rest of its unnatural born life.

An odd visual style tops off a very poor title in a suitably poor manner, jumping between looking halfway decent and just plain nasty. An unbalanced and sorely broken mess. [Dec 2005, p.106]

This game, while flawed, is honestly a great game imo. Some of the criticisms I've heard are pretty valid and I'd agree with but the game's also received some criticism that I feel is undeserved.

The camera movement can be distracting, particularly the cinematic shifts whenever you or an enemy is hit and that is irritating at times, especially when you're doing a hard mission or a hard versus battle and there are some other issues with gameplay but these are minor issues imo.

The Imperfects are interesting. Some I like, some I don't care for. I like The Wink and Hazmat. I don't like Fault Zone or Niles Van Roekel at all really (he seems like a generic villain character) and the others are basically somewhere inbetween.

The selection of marvel characters is interesting and all the characters all have different interesting playing styles. Some characters have strong projectiles (Iron man, Brigade, Human Torch) compared to others that have weaker projectiles (Elektra, Spider-Man, Magneto) or no projectiles at all (Wolverine, Thing, Fault Zone, Wink). Some characters are stronger than others, some are faster, some can fly, swing, teleport, run, wall run and/or wall climb. The game offers a lot of variety in every characters ability and while some characters are harder to fight with and there's some issues with balancing, it's nice to have a challenge which this game certainly allows you to do i.e. try fighting Iron Man with Wolverine.

The game has its issues but I think the main thing that makes up for everything for me is that the game is just fun. I can look past all the minor issues because the game offers me hours of fun and if you have someone to play the game with, then even better. I've played through the story mode multiple times in a short period (even though the game's plot is pretty bad at points, particularly at the end) because it's fun and I've spent a lot of time on the versus mode too. My favourite characters to play as are Human Torch and Wolverine even though they're not the stronger characters or easiest characters to win with

I just wish the online servers were still open. It'd be fun to play against other people.

Even though the story has its problems, I appreciate the effort they put into the Imperfect characters and giving them all a unique story and unique abilities, even if I don't care for some of them. The story is genuinely pretty good at points and is very ambitious in what it tried to do but at points it seemed like they didn't care about the story. And the combat seems much more suited to versus battles and boss battles than to the regular story missions where you beat up a bunch of alien invaders.

The game offers many moves, and even in your first playthrough there will be moves that you've never used. Give this game a chance.

For the inevitable sequel, I hope they concentrate more on versus mode and eliminate story mode entirely. Full Review »
