netjakIf you want great arcade action with minimal thinking, then pick this game up. Because once you go Mech/Jet you never go back.
-
The game feels very much like a third person version of "Command & Conquer."
-
Solid and well-builtits just not going to knock your mechanical socks off in the imagination department.
-
Official Xbox MagazineWhat it lacks in style or personality, Gun Metal more than makes up in gameplay and action.[Sept 2002, p.90]
-
Short and not so sweet.
-
The problem is that the missions youll have to complete consist almost entirely of defending this or that base, or playing escort to a group of ships. In other words you spend too much time defending and protecting and not enough time in one-on-one dogfights and full-on combat without worry of damaging friendly units.
-
The gameplay does grab the viewer, making it hard to put down. However, after I did put the game down, it was hard to pick it back up.
-
The arcade action is a nice diversion (and fun) for half hour stretches but any long-term involvement is not likely its just not deep enough. And the speed issues
-
The game's somewhat sticky control and straightlaced mission design keep Gun Metal's gameplay from living up to the strength of the idea.
-
Game Informer"Robotech" has the hot license and nifty cel-shaded look. Where does this leave Gun Metal? Nowhere, I'm afraid. [Oct 2002, p.91]
-
Lack of strategy, complexity, longevity and intensive AI and multiplayer modes which are usually the foundation of true mech warfare are absent here. I would consider this more of an advanced 2nd or 3rd generation shootem up with extra eye candy.
-
The bad news is that most of the levels play a lot like the first few, and that doesn't make for much long-term entertainment.
-
Xbox Nation MagazineThe game's title perhaps best describes the taste left in one's mouth after playing it than anythihng else. [Fall 2002, p.118]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyThe missions themselves are similarly uninspired, like the dreaded escort mission we've seen done a hundred times before. [Oct 2002, p.204]
-
The large levels are deceptive, as these do not provide freedom to explore. Even the much-maligned "Wild Metal" managed to offer some degree of exploration, and atmosphere.
-
Despite lots of shooting action, the unresponsive controls and below-average mission design lead to a distinctly dull experience.
-
Play MagazineThe missin objectives leave no room to breathe and take in all the loveliness; the physics on the robot are too floaty given its awesome scale; and the difficulty becomes insane too quickly. [Aug 2002, p.70]

AttaOct 8, 2005A great game, very funny, nice weapons and lots of action. The only minus point I can think of is that there isn't a multiplayer build in.
