If you want the best baseball out there, with speed, finesse, and control, then you have to go with the All Star.

The hitting has good pace, the graphics are gorgeous, and the fielding is on par. [Apr 2002, p.83]

If you love a good baseball sim and you want to invest some serious time in multiple seasons, this is the game for you.
  4. This game takes the purity and excitement of America's favorite pastime and brings it to the Xbox flawlessly.
  5. It has a deep franchise mode, accurate player ratings, and all the small details that make baseball fans giddy with excitement.
  6. Baseball fans will love the more hardcore side of the game whilst others will love the ability to pick up the game and play it straight away.
  7. Smooth graphics and a slew of modes and features make this a game Xbox baseball fans won't want to miss.
  8. Die-hard fans of the sport will immediately pick up on some of the deficiencies, but those can be overlooked due to the overall package.
  9. Pretty good, though we should go ask the pitchers if they have any sandpaper or emery boards we can use to take off the noticeable rough edges.

I'm all for authenticity, but holy smokes, that ball's hard to hit. [June 2002, p.118]
  11. Despite the awkward fielding system, limited camera angles, and inability to modify individual aspects of gameplay, the powerful tandem of great visuals and extensive modes of play will surely satisfy fans of the series wanting more substance over flash.
  12. While the atmosphere might not be all there and while the hitting might prove to be intimidating, those who learn to master the nuances of the game will be in for an enjoyable baseball experience.

My biggest problem with this game comes from the extremely unrealistic batting interface. [June 2002, p.78]

One of those games which can drive a gamer nuts. It tantalizes with a couple of neat ideas, but botches every else so completely it makes the player say, "Arrrrgh."

Choppy movements, mediocre graphics, and limited control options. [Summer 2002, p.90]

Gameplay is very good, with stunning sound and graphics. But franchise mode is too broad. Only 20 years. 2nd best baseball game on XBOX.

The batting interface is unrealistic and crappy, Far superior to Triple Play, but as a die-hard baseball fan, I'm truly disappointed. The batting interface is unrealistic and crappy, and I'm tired of all of the Mays-esque catches. It seems that there are at least five of those every game. Also, during the course of a season, what is the point in having control over the lineup, if your selections are to be overruled by the game. I've had healthy and productive players benched for no apparent reason as I play through the season. Finally, I had a player step up to the plate once, only to have him take one swing, and have the game tell me that he had contracted meningitis. What in the hell is that? Full Review »

This game is a lot of fun. The pitching is very realistic. Hitting takes a little bit of practice. Who wants 25 run games anyways.
