Were it not burdened by the legacy of its predecessor nor limited by its thin RPG systems, Bloodlines 2 would shine as a strong, story-driven action experience set in the haunting world of Seattle’s undead. It’s stylish, immersive, and confident in its own dark identity—flawed, yes, but captivating all the same.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 goes light on RPG mechanics and its action is somewhat lacking. And, yet, being at the heart of Seattle's political machinations, embodying a powerful vampire and engaging in brutal, bloody combat, is a lot more fun than the sum of its parts would suggest.

With a unique first-person perspective and technical aspects that leave much room for improvement, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 offers us a neo-noir adventure set in 21st-century Seattle. As an Ancient newly awakened from his slumber, we must investigate a dark plot while negotiating with the clans and increasing our influence in the city. As if that weren't enough, we'll have the help of a Malkavian inspector, Fabien, whose consciousness survives in the mind of our protagonist. Past and present come together in an investigation in which no character is above suspicion.

Bloodlines 2 has undeniable qualities: its rich world, its political intrigue, its immersive atmosphere, and some vampiric powers offer real moments of pleasure. But the game multiplies good ideas that it executes poorly and, in this sense, is neither a good RPG nor a good action game. It's a mixed experience that, despite solid writing, suffers from rather poor level design, minimal progression, and low-impact choices, tarnishing the full potential of an otherwise promising sequel. Bloodlines 2 gives the impression of a game rushed out, which did not fully exploit what its flamboyant universe had to offer.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a paradoxical work, captivating in its atmosphere and rich in lore, but faltering in its execution. Its story is compelling, its narrative choices intriguing, and its gloomy universe fascinating, yet it frustrates the player with its technical shortcomings and dated gameplay. Seattle struggles to come alive, while the AI sorely lacks bite, leaving a mixed impression overall. This is a title to be savoured like an old wine: with patience and indulgence, reserved for fans of the genre who are able to appreciate its aromas despite its bitter notes. Others will no doubt prefer to wait for it to settle... or for the price to drop, which is what we recommend.
