Vanillaware's beautiful art brings to life a staggeringly deep strategy RPG where building units is just as fun as orchestrating battles.

Unicorn Overlord is a particular, almost indecipherable product. Vanillaware's new SRPG has adopted a refined and complex combat system which, although satisfying and engaging, may not suit all tastes, due to too many automatic mechanisms and the excessive micromanagement required. Characterized by the unmistakable style that distinguishes the productions of the Japanese team, Unicorn Overlord has nevertheless revealed itself to be a multi-faceted and ambitious strategy game, underlining once again the unparalleled creative flair of Vanillaware. If the overly classic story and totally automated battles don't scare you, make it yours and let yourself be enchanted by the magic of Fevrith.

If you can shrug off the many archetypes, dry dialogue and a handful of sexist character designs, then there are many, many hours of deeply engaging strategy to be had here.

One of the great surprises of this 2024 and a must-have title in the library of every tactical role-playing lover. Immerse yourself in the world of Fevrith and help Alain lead the Liberation Army in its struggle to defeat the terrifying Zenoiran Empire in this great role-playing and strategy adventure in which we will have to create our own units by selecting from a large number of classes and characters available.

The fact that Unicorn Overlord is both accessible to new players of the tactical genre while still managing to please the most experienced and demanding fans of the genre through its complex and extensive customisation of strategies and units is an achievement. With five regions to explore, more than 60 characters to unlock and 7 or 8 dozen hours of gameplay, the it's only real problem is the emptiness it leaves behind once you've finished it.

Unicorn Overlord is a wonderful RPG that is filled with fascinating characters. Furthermore, the innovative combat system is captivating and I loved the dramatic plot. The only downside is the action can become repetitive.

Unicorn Overlord offers a gaming experience that ranges from rewarding moments where everything flows and army growth is the sole concern, to complex challenges that demand creativity and efficient use of limited resources. Forming a competent squad requires more than just selecting favorite characters; it’s crucial to consider their role in combat and the right timing for deployment. Although battles do not have severe consequences, this can lead to an overload of options and characters, many of which may remain unused due to the plethora of possible configurations.

Unicorn Overlord isn’t so much about why you are journeying, but more about who is joining you, who stands in your way and how good you look whilst progressing.

VanillaWare has managed a successful incursion into the tactical-rpg scene: the title delivered by the studio is rich and shines with innumerable qualities. Although the story is clichéd, Overlord Unicorn is sumptuous and generous. The multiple layers of gameplay make it an adventure well worth exploring. The systems are numerous, but the whole thing remains accessible, and that is its greatest feature. You will have to test and experiment to master the art of war. It is hard to keep it simple.
