The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a phenomenal achievement that hits so many highs. It’s an overall fantastic and unforgettable experience. I’d honestly go so far as saying it is now THE best title in the Elder Scrolls franchise (at least until Morrowind receives the same treatment)

Now is the absolute best time to pick up the old iron sword and start an adventure across the wonderful wilds of Cyrodiil and the devilish lava fields of the daedric realm Oblivion.

Returning to Cyrodiil is a delight. Oblivion Remastered takes everything Bethesda did right in the fourth chapter of The Elder Scrolls and updates it to make it as enjoyable today as we enjoyed it almost 20 years ago. Faster load times, a redrawn world for increased visual impact, new lines of dialogue and gameplay improvements are the foundation of a very powerful experience that includes all expansions and DLC for hundreds of hours of enjoyment in Cyrodiil, Oblivion and the Realm of Madness.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is an excellent return to Cyrodiil, with new graphics, voice recordings, and tweaks to combat that enhance Bethesda Game Studios' 2006 fantasy role-playing game. Everything that makes the game so unique is still here, and while further quality of life features would be nice, Oblivion is still a must-play game like it was nearly two decades ago.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is about as good a remaster as you could hope for. It doesn’t look to reinvent the gameplay, instead focusing on smart tweaks where possible. What is remade are the graphics, and Virtuous has done a stupendous job keeping the feel of the original while overhauling every single pixel. It’s available on Game Pass, is fully Play Anywhere, and retails for $50 otherwise. Oblivion is an easy recommendation, as one of my favorite games is now that much better.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered wears the garments of Unreal Engine 5 over the logical skeleton of the GameBryo engine, projecting onto the screen a sort of vivid, moving memory of Cyrodiil, shaping a sort of simulacrum of how we imagined Oblivion appeared like at the time of its release.

Bugginess and strange character design choices keep Oblivion Remastered from being excellent. Tipping the scales from “good” territory into “great” are the levelling and gameplay improvements. It resembles a remake. Even with new memory leak issues, Oblivion remains a timeless masterpiece, and this remaster ensures its legacy will live on. Oblivion was born nineteen years ago, but for all these years, it has ruled our dreams.

It’s tricky to disconnect the expectations of the modern gamer from an RPG that was unconventionally innovative back in 2006. Yet Oblivion can still put on an admirable show two decades on and will please many players for whom nostalgia is not the primary motivation.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster is a faithful refresh of a classic that still holds up. Not a remake, but a visual tribute that invites both veterans and newcomers to get lost all over again.

Before the release of this remaster, I wasn't convinced that it would be a good idea to revisit Oblivion. Wouldn't it be better to remember it the way we experienced it ages ago? But now that I've collected plenty of new memories with the game: Oblivion is well worth your time in its Remastered version, almost 20 years after its original release.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is an awesome nostalgic adventure that recaptures most of what I loved about the 2006 original, while sanding down many of its roughest edges. The result is a fantastic open-world RPG that’s aged quite well, with questlines and stories that are better than I remembered, modernizations (like the slightly improved leveling system) that remove some of the friction of the original, and loads of opportunities to make this adventure whatever you want it to be via the plentiful freedom afforded to you. On the downside, not enough has been done to make this thing significantly less buggy than it notoriously was back in the day, and some choices – like the enemy scaling and procedural Oblivion levels that become dull fast – have not been improved, which feels like a squandered opportunity. Even so, I never expected to so thoroughly enjoy replaying through this uniquely goofy RPG, and I am so, so glad I took this walk down memory lane (now with the option to sprint down it).

There's a lot to complain about The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. The game suffers from serious bugs, doesn't offer mod support on consoles and in a few respects can be quite disappointing. Still, that doesn't change the fact that it's one of the best RPGs of all time and a beautifully refreshed classic that anyone who is disappointed by new games in the genre should reach for. It's a game you play - do quests, explore, fight, live adventures. It doesn't instruct us how to live and what to think, it doesn't show us with a finger what to do and how to do it, instead it allows us to get lost and lose ourselves. And it's just incredibly fun, despite all the shortcomings.

An excellent remaster that preserves the original’s eccentricities and old school character, while instituting a complete graphical overhaul and adding a suite of modern conveniences.

Virtuous seem to understand that trademark Oblivion "charm" because the remaster keeps the best of the Bethesda jank intact while gently reworking some of Oblivion's more dated mechanics.

Certainly, the single-player open-world RPG has evolved a lot in 20 years. Even if The Elder Scrolls IV remains an incredibly rich title, various elements remind us that we are indeed facing a software released in 2006. But what we must not forget is that Oblivion was ahead of its time and that it still has serious arguments in 2025. Virtuos' love letter to Bethesda's work is in any case very strong: it's beautiful, it's intelligently renovated and it remains faithful to the soul of a creation that marked its time. Nostalgics, you have every reason in the world to answer the call of the Blades. Newcomers, it might be time to let yourself be seduced by this old grimoire beautifully reissued, especially if you have the Game Pass: you might find a bewitching formula.

You can talk about numerous problems and mistakes in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Although the original game has passed the test of time, its re-release epitomizes everything I hate about modern games from Bethesda Game Studios.
