Terminator 2D: NO FATE is a good game, with lots of nods to the lore, all of which will go down well with fans of the franchise. Equally, it’s welcoming enough for those who aren’t invested in the universe.

A '90s-style movie tie-in you might have seen in an arcade back then, had it actually existed, Terminator 2D: No Fate is a love letter to retro games and a sci-fi classic that might be short, but it's oh-so sweet. Hasta la vista, baby.

Despite its short length, Terminator 2D: NO FATE is an excellent retro shooter that emulates the '90s gameplay so faithfully that it doesn’t really introduce any particularly fresh ideas of its own. However, as a cultural piece of art, Bitmap Bureau’s latest work is such a spot-on achievement that its minor shortcomings hardly detract from the experience at all.

Played on Xbox Series X, Terminator 2D: No Fate proves to be a technically solid and fluid experience, fully supporting its focus on rhythm, precision, and muscle memory. Bitmap Bureau succeeds in adapting Terminator 2 by respecting not only its imagery but also the historical and cultural context it comes from. Its arcade-driven design embraces both the strengths and limitations of old-school action: the high difficulty demands patience and commitment, but rewards mastery and consistency. This is not a game for everyone, but it is a focused and honest adaptation aimed at players who appreciate a more essential and demanding take on classic arcade gameplay.

Terminator 2D: NO FATE is a gorgeous, fun time, with all the positives and negatives of 90s arcade games. The inclusion of alternate story paths helps the title from feeling too repetitive. Any fan of the franchise would do well to check this one out.
