Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon does enough to get a recommendation. This is an extremely immersive game that sucks you into its world. Wandering about and exploring is good fun, but add in a plethora of quests and a massive amount of adjustment in the way you play, and this is almost a classic. If only it wasn’t for that numb combat…

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an ambitious RPG that, despite technical flaws and clunky mechanics, captivates with a dark, atmospheric world, an intriguing reimagining of Arthurian legend, and exploration reminiscent of genre classics. While imperfect, it offers hours of fun for fans craving a new The Elder Scrolls–like adventure.

Ambitious in scope and scale, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an enormously ambitious and remarkably deep Oblivion-inspired RPG. But in shooting for such a high bar, its technical shortcomings unfortunately hamper the overall experience.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a lot like the sword Excalibur; the greatness of the sword can be seen underneath but its currently lodged in a rock made of poor optimization. If you can forgive the bugs and all of the jank this game brings to the round table, then you may just find a hauntingly cool world worth exploring.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon makes a pretty rough first impression. It feels low-budget, is undeniably janky, and frankly not very pleasant to look at. The choppy framerate alone might turn off a lot of players within the first few minutes. But if you're a fan of The Elder Scrolls or Souls-like games, and you've been craving a deep, immersive RPG that blends the best elements of both, you'd be making a mistake to ignore this one.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not a game for everyone. It requires a certain tolerance for technical clumsiness, a taste for free exploration, and an attraction to heavy, mystical atmospheres. The game does not revolutionise the genre, but it has a solid grasp of the mechanics it chooses to exploit. And for those who are willing to dive in, it offers a rewarding experience, rich in meaning and atmosphere, which unfolds and gains depth throughout the adventure. It is a work marked by the passion of its creators, who, despite their limited resources, have managed to propose a unique open world, challenging gameplay and an interesting alternative mythology. Despite lacking some proper finish, this adventure and its captivating universe and gameplay are worth spending some time on.
