This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Even the empty planets can be quite immersive just walking around reaching places and watching out for miles into a lonely desolate world, and can be a nice change. A game that where you decide to go and do one thing or reach a area but end up doing many other things as there's so many things that can distract you like: reading random books, site seeing, watching NPC, finding notes, enjoying the environment, upgrading, listening in on NPC, experimenting, discovering secrets, building ships, mining, discovering quests, experiencing random events, messing around with physics...etc..etc. The graphics at times can really impress and with detail, even when not at its best this game still looks great for most part. The games feels smooth and is great to have a 3rd perspective view. The action is good and very functional and dies the job well enough without all the OTT flashy action modern games seem to do and without QTE and Scripted events - it's more back to basics but in a very good way! This is not No Man's Sky, they are different games with only Space being the common theme. For Starfield is Mass Effect meets Skyrim but with its own features, that you experience as you further get into the game. A quality game that brings adventure, RPG, exploration, different styles of approach, action, story, quests this branch out, customisation, and other things and also considering the freedom, random events and scale of this game...it delivers a very enjoyable and immersive game that will give players different experiences each time you play - a game that can and will probably still be played 10yrs(+) from now as updates, mods, dlc will start to appear just like on classics Skyrim, Fallout games. Much like other Bethesda RPGs there are so many ways to play. The replayability of this game seems to be massive. The combat is the best from Bethesda its on part with the likes of Outerworlds or Mass Effect Andromeda, that style of combat. The exploration is pretty decent, it's a blend between Bethesda hand crafted and No Man's Sky procedural generated environments. It's not endless, though I haven't experienced it, I have heard it is possible to have repeated locations but that seems low chance. By far the best parts of the game are the random encounters in systems off the beaten path. It's not all sunshine and rainbows I've encountered some bugs nothing major or game breaking 1 bugged questline because I accidentally destoryed the target before starting the quest & some funny moments nothing that won't be solved with a patch. A highly addictive game great fun. if you like Bethesda games you probably like this. If you think its more like Star citizen or no man's sky but with a detailed story you'll probably be disappointed. Expand

Now....40 hours in, this game is a blast and I've barely scratched the surface of what can be done. I've had laugh out loud moments, moments that are very touching, and moments just trying to stay alive. The combat is very well done. But just remember, the game is far more in depth that most even understand. The only way to keep discovering this games goodness is to peel back the layers, one at a time. Bethesda has a ton of haters and I know many negative reviews come from people who will hate, no matter what. And their games aren't for everyone, but for me....total believable immersion into a brand new world. What I've always loved about their previous games. And this one has not disappointed. Expand

Todd Howard LIED. He promised "unparalleled" freedom in a "next gen" RPG. Bethesda has all the resources and talent in the world but something has gone terribly wrong. The writing and quest design would be considered lazy as of 5 years ago, but in a post-Baldur's Gate 3 world this is simply unacceptable from a AAA developer. The character models simply look awful.

In a space exploration game, you'd assume you can actually explore space right? Wrong. You can't actually fly except in very limited circumstances, and everything else is just a loading screen to hide the limitations of the engine. Except games that are 7 years old had seamless space to atmosphere transitions. The fast travel system completely breaks immersion.

You know that internal playtesters made all of this clear, Bethesda simply didn't care. They never go more than a few seconds to remind everyone they made Skyrim and Fallout.

Were the programmers forced to return to the office so they stopped caring? Very, very poor showing from Bethesda. Stay away.

Because, apparently, there can be no legitimate complaints that are not part of some right-wing conspiracy. And if you think that's hyperbole on my part, do yourself a favour and read any number of articles from gaming sites trying to gaslight you into believing that no rational, reasonable person would do anything less than worship at the altar of Todd Howard for what is, according to certain critic reviews, one of the greatest games ever.

There have already been a number of comparisons made between Starfield and Mass Effect for mainly story-based reasons and the obvious challenges that come with creating an original sci-fi IP.
But where Bioware gave a masterclass in writing and game design, Bethesda has created a vast universe of staid, lifeless characters and locations in service of a trite and forgettable story-line.

To this day, I still love the first Mass Effect game. It's clunky as hell to play and, compared to modern games, a bit of an eye sore at times, but it nailed three important ingredients when it comes to forging a memorable space opera: plot, characters, and exploration. Even the barren, lifeless planets in Mass Effect were more rewarding to explore.
Mass Effect gave us memorable antagonists like Saren and the reapers. Starfield? Not even worth mentioning.
Mass Effect's companions are among the most loved of any gaming franchise. Starfield? Not one of them resonates in any way. I've seen K-Mart mannequins with more personality.
As for the main story, I don't want to go into detail without giving away spoilers, but it's as clear as day that Starfield has taken inspiration from Mass Effect, which, in a way, is to be expected and is perfectly fine if executed correctly. But instead of using that inspiration to create something new and memorable, Starfield's main quest is a lazy MacGuffin adventure.

And then ... and then there is "the message". This may well be the real reason why left-wing gaming outlets are so driven to write off any and all critiques of Starfield as being right-wing trolling; they are committed to defending "the message" at all costs.

Bias in storytelling is unavoidable, and I wouldn’t have a real problem with a progressive narrative if it was done organically, subtly, and woven into the story. Instead, it is blatantly clear that an agenda was at play here. Quotas had to met and “the message” delivered. This was current-day social issues masquerading as how the future should be according to those pushing this agenda. Simply put, the story is secondary to “the message”.
It is so utterly blatant with the characters you meet and their predictable dialogue.

The following is a list compiled by a player on Steam:

"First person you meet in a position of authority - Woman
Leader of Constellation, the main quest faction - Woman
President of the United Colonies, biggest faction - Woman
Freestars Lead Ranger and quest giver - Woman
CEO of Ryujin industries - Woman
Ryujin Industries quest giver - Woman
    Shaw gang leader - Woman
Owner of Red Mile - Woman
Head of security for Red Mile - Woman

Zealots from the dominant religions - White dudes
Heads of Xenofresh, the corrupt drug-pedalling corpos - White dudes
Corrupt and cruel administrator of Neon - White dude
Corrupt governor of Mars - white dude
Snobbish bankroller at Constellation - White dude"

At one point, we’re told by a minor character multiple times just how awesome a particular captain of the marines is – that she’s the best damn marine ever. Get it? Women can not only be as good as men in any endeavour imaginable, but better! This may be a computer game set in a fictional universe, but when women are constantly being paraded as better warriors than men, we’ve suddenly lost all contact with reality and, as a result, immersion. We’ve seen this trend for years now with any number of movies, TV shows, and games, but it is so in-your-face with Starfield that you’re never able to truly lose yourself in this universe.

And to any writer out there wanting to know how to write ‘strong’ female characters – watch Alien and T2. They’re strong not because they try to out-masculine men, but because of inner strength that helps them overcome their lack of physical strength, which in turn makes them more relatable. Shoving a conga line of masculine, unrelatable, unlikeable, sassy, Karen-esque heroines in our faces in an attempt to cure us of our misogyny only makes us want to call you out even more for pushing your agenda.

Your wanna fly down to the surface? It'd be a boring trip! Would you wanna spend money on something majority don't care, and won't even try?
One or 2 youtubers might try it, but I'll bet, he/she will never do it again. It's life wasting.

Would you prefer to fly 20 hours (20 years?, 20 light years?) from planet A to planet B (meantime, it's just a boring flight)?
Or would you prefer, like in a movie, take off, cut, entering a planet, cut, landed, cut, shows that you've "traveled"?

On a planet, you wanna go to A, but you are at the opposite side of the location. You sure you wanna fly there? Have your even been to overseas? You know how freaking tiring it is to fly 10+hours right?

I love how the game feels old yet new, it definitely keeps the fallout/bethesda vibe there! I recommend this game to anyone on XBOX/PC & for those not on either one of those i feel bad!!

Starfield really is just Fallout 4 with some space thrown in. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing especially if you are a fan of Bethesda's games and its quasi-sense of freedom. While some of the main quest is uninteresting, the side quests are where the real stories are, much like previous games. Base building I could take or leave but it is a good source of resources to make money or expand your base if you really want to. Space combat is decent. It’s a welcome respite from “ground” missions though does not have any of that depth. It’s more like a palette cleanser between quests than anything else. Overall it’s a fun game. As a Bethesda fan it feels familiar and almost comforting. Is it game of the year? Probably not. Is it what Microsoft wants it to be, their Zelda to Nintendo’s Switch? I’m not sure. As someone who owns both consoles I’m glad when a game on either system turns out to be fun. I have no ill will towards either company. The better their games are, the more games we have to enjoy. And a bit of competition helps. Will it be the game that makes game pass and cloud gaming the big seller and the future? Probably not. Expand

Unconventional to the likes of previous titles like Skyrim and Fallout 3, there isn’t a famous “step out moment” but rather a slow crescendo into what ends up being one of the deepest narrative driven experiences I’ve had in years. There are so many moments that have you feeling like you are playing four or five games in one.

Starfield is an epic adventure that is worth savoring and is best described as a slow cooked meal- it is the slow cooked meals that are most satisfying.

There are some truly odd choices. In all honesty this game could be a 9 out of 10 in around 6 months to a year. Once the modding community has fixed it. It's a really good game. It's just going to take time to get there. For instance, the game is optimised to run smoothly on a RTX4080 and that's from the horse's mouth. That card accounts for like 0.53% of users on steam. So, for the vast majority of players the game looks and feels terrible to play.

There is this huge gap between those that have the hardware to run the game and those that don't and as a game development company. Bethesda should be aware of this. The completely out of touch comment of, this is a next gen title when for most people the game looks and feels like a PS3 title. Is sadly going to mean lower scores on meta critic.

If reviewers were honest about the game, they would review the game on a 3060. Which is the top ish part of the bell curve for gpu performance on steam. If your game does not look and feel fantastic to play on a 3060. Ur going to have a bad day in the user review section of Metacritic.

The most important thing is to start - this is a great game, one of a kind. I've seen a lot of hate towards this game with complaints like "flying in this game is not like in space simulators", "In this game you can't manually land like in "No man's sky", "In this game shooting is not like in doom" etc. that is, claims that in a huge RPG game its individual elements are not at the sameThe most important thing is to start - this is a great game, one of a kind. I've seen a lot of hate towards this game with complaints like "flying in this game is not like in space simulators", "In this game you can't manually land like in "No man's sky", "In this game shooting is not like in doom" etc. that is, claims that in a huge RPG game its individual elements are not at the same level as in the best highly specialized games, where in fact there is practically nothing else besides these mechanics.
Another common complaint I heard was "The game world is empty procedurally generated garbage". Seriously? Does this really need to be explained? For 5-6 years, any development team can physically work out a map (so that it is filled with interesting activities per square meter) approximately the size of Skyrim or Fallout 4 - this is 9-15 square kilometers, since people's time and forces are not unlimited. In Starfield, we don’t have a single map like in Skyrim or F4, but there are planets, it turns out that a conditional map of 15 square kilometers is divided into zones, these zones are separate well-designed planets, it’s easy to count them in the game, it won’t be so a lot of.
Everything else (1000 planets) is just an entourage with procedural generation and the illusion of an infinite space, so that there is no dissonance like in the same Mass Effects, where there were conditional 4-5 planets (just the same ordinary limited locations) and that's it, nowhere else even theoretically you can't fly.
So did anyone seriously expect the game will have 1,000 hand-crafted planets?
Do I need to say that all these claims look absolutely stupid and childish? People came up with a dream game that no one promised them - A huge RPG with 1000 hand-crafted planets, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky and DOOM in one bottle, and when they didn't get it, they accused the developers of lying and labeled the game as a failure ... probably forgetting that only Star Citizen (in which, by the way, there is practically nothing else besides good space flights and resource collection) has been developed for 13 years and has not yet been released ... That's the essence of the absurdity - people demanded that Bethesda make a dream game in 6 years, which actually takes 5000 years to develop...
Returning to the game itself, I can safely say that this is the most ambitious and incredible project from Bethesda, in which almost all aspects and mechanics have been improved compared to their previous games, which in turn were masterpieces and improved radically - graphics, lighting, animations, physics and facial animations - all of this has been taken to a whole new level. The style of the game, all those dashboards, computers, buttons and switches, is pure ecstasy for fans of science fiction. And this is only talking about the visual part, and in addition to this, you will also find a huge RPG game with exciting quests and many additional mechanics, such as building your own ships and outposts. This game is very meditative, unhurried, in which a huge emphasis is placed on immersion and getting aesthetic pleasure from the very stay in this world, and if you like games like RDR 2 or Death Stranding, you will definitely like Starfield, although they are different in genre games, but in spirit they are very close.
Starfield is an amazing game, the best Bethesda game so far and yes it's not perfect, but show me the perfect game without flaws, the answer is simple, games like this just don't exist in our world.

Graphic mods sure it can be upgrade but the feeling sticks with you.
    2. Space is empty and so does the planets in Starfield. It's repetitive, feedex, loading screen etc not something I enjoyed the most. Less, more dense and diverse planets would be much more fun to play. Walking and walking, scanning, gathering materials is simply boring.
    3. Perk wall is the next thing, everything you can do in the game is behind perk wall so don't be suprised if you have to abandon mission because you don't have needed perk.
    4. There is no need for spaceship, you teleport from one place to another through loading screens and if there was no spaceship in the game I wouldn't even care. And it's behind perk wall aswell.
    5. The game for me is a bit souless and lacking of immersion. AI is mediocre at most with some exceptions of guns fights which sometimes are actually very good, guns are responsive and feels great and I think is the best part of the game.
    6. Main story is in my opinion boring. Years of development, basically unlimited budget and that's the main story?

So to my overall rating of 6/10 it is mediocre game with couple of good moments. If this was a PS4 game or Xbox One it would be 9/10 or goty but it's not it supposed to be next gen. I feel that this game came really to late. As I said the first thing that hits me is the outdated feel and looks of the game. It's not how AAA game from big studio with big money should look and feel like. Waiting for heavy mods and DLC as big as that in Witcher 3

It skillfully blends a compelling narrative with finely honed dialogues, pulling players into its cosmic embrace. However, it also has a learning curve and some quirks that might dampen the experience.

    **Story and Quests:**

Starfield's narrative is a celestial gem that grips players right from the start. Its dialogues and story are finely crafted and captivating. The soundtrack adds a cosmic symphony, setting the perfect tone for your interstellar adventures.

    **Pros:**

    - **Initial Attraction:** Starfield immerses you deeply in its captivating universe from the start.
    - **Graphical Brilliance:** Starfield's visuals have evolved, reminiscent of the transformation from Oblivion to Skyrim. It retains Bethesda's signature charm, making every moment enchanting.
    - **Scenic Marvel:** Picture being on a world tour of awe-inspiring planets, each one more breathtaking and distinct than the last.
    - **Craft Your Ship:** The ability to customize your spacecraft adds a layer of ownership as you traverse the cosmos.

    **Cons:**

    - **Enemy Monotony:** Combat can sometimes devolve into repetitive exchanges against a limited cast of foes, diminishing the thrill of encounters.
    - **Weapon Woes:** The game's arsenal could use more variety, and combat strategies might benefit from some innovation to keep the excitement alive.
    - **Loading Overdrive:** The frequent loading screens can feel like cosmic speed bumps, occasionally interrupting the fluidity of your journey.
    - **Wonky Hitboxes:** Hitbox issues can leave you scratching your space helmet during combat, even with weapon specialization.
    - **Inventory Woes:** Managing your space gear can become a chore due to the lack of search, filter, and sorting options, leading to a cluttered experience.
    - **Boss Battle Void:** Expectations of epic boss battles might not always align with the cosmic arena, sometimes leaving these encounters feeling less remarkable.
    - **Exploration Loop:** While planets offer diverse biomes, your cosmic journey can sometimes seem like a loop of walking, cave exploration, base visits, and battling the same cosmic critters repeatedly.

In summary, Starfield is a stellar odyssey filled with wonders and hidden stories that sometimes shine brighter than the main narrative. However, amidst the cosmic splendor, a touch of monotony and a few quirks remind us that even in the vastness of space, there's room for improvement.

The game offers a staggering amount of customization options, from the appearance and skills of my character, to the design and functionality of my spaceship, to the weapons and gadgets I can craft and use.

The game world is simply breathtaking, with over 1000 planets to explore, each with its own unique atmosphere, culture, flora, fauna, and secrets. The game does an amazing job of balancing realism and fantasy, creating a believable and consistent universe that draws inspiration from both science and fiction. The game also features a dynamic weather system, day-night cycle, and realistic physics that affect the gameplay and the environment.

The story of Starfield is captivating and engaging, with branching paths and multiple endings that depend on my choices and actions. The game puts me in the role of a member of Constellation, the last group of space explorers seeking rare artifacts throughout the galaxy. Along the way, I encounter various factions, characters, and quests that challenge me morally, intellectually, and emotionally. The game does not shy away from tackling complex themes such as humanity's place in the cosmos, the ethics of colonization, the nature of artificial intelligence, and the consequences of war.

The gameplay of Starfield is smooth and satisfying, with a seamless transition between first-person and third-person perspective. It could be a good game, if not for the lies and laziness of the Bethesda team. Instead, it is a total disappointment. I truly waited for this game and was willing to forgive many things as a "serial Bethesda player" since TES III Morrowind, but this is just appalling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With Bethesda's big drop you're going see a lot of BS 0-3s so let me tell you what to expect. Did you like Skyrim and/Or Fallout? Because if you did you'll love this. It's a Bethesda RPG. The planets do feel large but some feel empty, (Earth is literally just a giant desert.) The Space fighting is Ok but repetitive, and the Story is good. The combat is where the game truly starts to shine IMHO Whether you're taking on Space Raiders, or the Dreaded Terrormorph the combat is insanely fun on ground. Each level brings with it a certain amount of strategy, what worked previously may not work later. As with every Bethesda Title, Lore is plenty in this game. From an entire Museum dedicated to The Wars and loss of earth, To the countless Data Pads and books containing information on what happened in a certain location, or Big event, there's no loss on lore fans. A few things I've seen people complain about: Loading Screens: Do y'all realize how big this game is? Having a completely open world is going to make your game run like crap. Besides which I haven't had one longer than 10 seconds yet. No space Exploration: While I agree with you, I feel this does feel like a necessary evil. I can't imagine the frame loss as a massive planet rolls in.

IT'S WOKE REEEEEE: GROW. A. PAIR. PRONOUNS!!!!!!!!!: Show me where the pronouns hurt you...

It's not on PlayStation!: Yeah well Spider-Man isn't on Xbox, but you don't see me giving THAT a 0 do you?

It Runs like crap!: No. It doesn't. It only has 30FPS!: Yup and it runs fine.

Moving to graphics and design, Amazing. Yes there's some cookie-cutter designs, but that's nothing new in Bethesda IPs. (How many times have we seen the same reused assets in Draugr tombs or Falmer Dens?) The creature design is awesome. So far my favorite that I've seen is the Terrormorph, which seems to be this game's Dragon or Deathclaw. And the planets look awesome day or night. I've yet to encounter any typical Bethesda bugs, or texture loss, let alone frame loss. So is it the biggest Revolution in gaming? No. Is it fun? Hell yeah.

Mediocre at its best of times, unplayable, boring, uninspiring, bug infested, poor-performing, and shallow for the other 99% of the time. It gets a 3 because the ship building is cool and the 5 seconds you spend in space are pretty.

In this game, you can set up a colony, customize ships, modify weapons and armor, create items and collect resources, among other possibilities. Surprisingly, 30 fps isn't a problem, and gameplay even feels smoother than expected.

The reason for generating this confusion with "Starfield" is that it is a Microsoft game, not a Sony one, which generates anger in the Sony media and the Poyneis.

Not only is this game not the exploration game that was promised (mostly fast travel to designated set pieces) but it is straight up broken. I can not progress due to a character I am supposed to interact with not being present. Reloading saves has not fixed it. I truly can't finish the game unless I start completely over which I will not be doing.

You know all the complaining people are doing about loading screens? A ton of that could be solved if Bethesda had 1 employee, just 1 that had ever owned an iPhone, Blackberry, or Galaxy. Alas, we get to run back and forth for every single quest update, sometimes across many light years, because nobody at BGS said "Hey, maybe we should let them call some of this in."

Terrible. That alone takes 4 points off of the game. The loading screens, terrible animation, horrible story, and broken AI should take off another 3 or 4 points, but I'm going to say this is a 5...because that's about what it is when you compare it to the other garbage that AAA studios have been releasing lately.

Finished. Wait until you finish this game. If you thought it was bad before, holy jeez does it find a way to get much worse. I had given it a 5, but after finishing I'm giving it a 2. Absolutely terrible writing, buggy mess, lackluster "innovation", disjointed and jumbled universe (really just a series of boxes), and I could go on, but I'm just glad to be done with it. Play it for the ship building, which is neat. The rest is a slog at best, and painful at times. BGS doesn't deserve your money ever again. FO76 really was enough for that, imo, but we all fell for Todd's lies.

One more thing…. Let me remind you of some of Todd’s own words: “unparalleled exploration”and “exploration without limits.” It was neither of these things. Not even close. It was a trash game developed to sell GamePass subscriptions to kids whose parents didn’t know why an Xbox Series S is not the same as an Xbox Series X. The game time was padded after data mining by analysts who figured out how many months before someone forgets to cancel a sub and how many hours a month the average Xbox Series S player puts into a game.

3 months for them to forget about their sub? They average about 20 hours a month? Make the game take about 75 hours. This is today’s Microsoft. Wait until they get ahold of Blizzard and Activision.

I would rather listen to nails on a chalk board than this poor excuse for a narrative. The story is so cliche and boring that I often forget to do the main missions and just go do something else. When I play a bethesda game I expect a good story with interesting characters. Starfield is the exact opposite of that. To top off my experience the game ran pretty bad. I had a couple 3 minute loading screens that I have to restart my whole console. Then in one day the game decides to kick me off 3 times in a single day. Thank god for quick save or I would be so mad. The fps drop is very noticeable as well. All in all this is a fun sandbox game that is plagued by a boring story, uninspiring characters, and a sad excuse for performance on console. 83/100 respectfully. Expand

The game feels empty and disjointed and constantly breaks immersion with so much required interaction through menus and time spent in loading screens. It feels like Bethesda kept all the bad parts from previous games and didn't improve on any of the good ones. The UI is terrible, especially on PC. Why can't you see the contents of tour own inventory and the vessel you're transferring to at the same time? Why do we have to rely on mods to have any sort of filtering when you can have hundreds of items? Why can't we swap weapon mods over to rarer weapons like you could do in Fallout 4? The list goes on. It seems the budget was spent on graphics and that Bethesda is happy to rely on mods to to fix all the glaring issues. The space combat is so boring and bare bones that the game would have been better without it. No need to buy fuel, no need to buy missiles as they just magically recharge. Whoever was making decisions on game mechanics has clearly never played a space sim like Freelancer, Everspace or even anything from the X series. There is no point in any excitement for a Bethesda title anymore as they seem to revel in mediocre releases that simply aren't worth the time to grind through. I pity whoever pitched the idea to Microsoft that buying Bethesda would be a good investment. Well done Todd Howard. As always, it just works. Expand

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
