Feb 26, 2024Skull and Bones is a live service game that has arrived in a world where that kind of trend seems to be dying. There’s no doubt that it starts off great, but very soon it all becomes a bit of a grind, not helped by a weak story and too much time at sea.

Feb 16, 2024Skull and Bones isn’t the successor to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag that many seem to want, and it isn’t many of things Ubisoft itself said it would be at various points in its storied history, but the seafaring RPG we ultimately got is still surprisingly good. Sailing around the Indian Ocean firing cannons, mortars, and giant ballista at your foes is a fun time, the RPG mechanics and cooperative buildcrafting is as deep as the ocean with plenty of awesome gadgets to grind for, and the economy simulator is impressively in-depth. It doesn’t quite fulfill the promise of a decade-long cruise to port yet either, with a thin endgame, almost no story to speak of, and general instability that sometimes makes the adventure feel like a rough draft. But here’s hoping some of those shortcomings can be washed away by the waves of content already planned to come in an ambitious live-service roadmap that’s fast approaching. For now, its maiden voyage is a good start.

Feb 18, 2024While Skull & Bones is far from the worst game ever made, it completely fails in conveying its vision of becoming a legendary pirate captain. Instead, it chases every conceivable gaming trend from excessive crafting, battle passes and hands-off story telling and leaves next to no impact whatsoever. Even among Ubisoft titles, often mocked for their bland sandbox approach, “Skull & Bones” seemingly perfected the blandness with a sparse few highlights when environment, multiplayer and ship combat all click into place and reveal a wealth of untapped potential.

Mar 17, 2024Much as Sea of Thieves took a while to hoist its masts to full sail, Skull and Bones may eventually vindicate itself. Ubisoft would do well to slough away some of the cruft, zero in on the naval warfare and inject more life into its scenic but largely empty outposts.

Feb 22, 2024After all the drama, all the hype and a lengthy development process, Skull and Bones is here, and it fails miserably. This is not a AAAA title, and even calling it a AAA title is highly debateable. I wouldn't waste my money on it and I recommend that you don't either.

Feb 21, 2024Considering the game’s notoriously troubled development, Skull and Bones is definitely not as bad as it could have been. With many of its tweaks to the naval combat pioneered in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, the game is often fun, particularly with a friend. However, those moments of fun are sometimes hard to find, and are buried under boring travel, glacially-paced harvesting and looting, and a rather shallow world to explore. If you’re a fan of other multiplayer live-service titles and are looking for a new kind of game to check out with friends, Skull and Bones certainly brings something new to the table that Destiny 2 and The Division 2 do not, but it is not all smooth sailing.

Feb 15, 2024Skull & Bones isn't the disaster we feared, nor is it the definitive take on the genre we hoped it could be given all the money and time that's been pumped into it. Ubisoft has served up reliably decent naval combat, trading and exploration here, but it's marred by a lack of overall direction, by far too many bland early hours, and by endgame fun that requires a whole lot of plodding to reach. If you love the pirate life you will find enough here to keep you entertained, it all looks and feels suitably good, but it's gonna need more content and reasons to stick at it before it earns a more hearty recommendation from us.

Mar 17, 2024Who would've thought that in 2024 we would actually get Skull & Bones, after 11 years in the oven and it still feels incomplete, unserious and it is pretty boring. Whoever is looking for a fun pirate experience, can already find it elsewhere.

Feb 29, 2024Skull & Bones isn’t a horrible game at all, but its not the game that we wanted. I mean all they had to do was just remove the assassin’s vs templar story from what they had with Black Flag and let us be pirates. I don’t know, I am just a black guy with a laptop and a big mouth; I am certain that game development is more difficult than all that. Skull & Bones offers some fun and often times thrilling combat, but the downtime and story in-between all that is just not interesting. This game is going to end up being another victim of chasing that ole dragon which is live service game success. Its not for every game, and hopefully, prayerfully developers will stop trying to attain this high and just set this fad out to sea.

Feb 19, 2024Skull and Bones is not the shipwreck that many people made it out to be, but it is not a masterpiece either, and we are a long way from a title that is supposed to represent the AAAA classification that has been claimed so far. The game doesn’t really offer a storyline, but rather a series of missions with little variety, culminating in an endgame mode that we found too time-consuming and repetitive. Fortunately, the combat aspect is pleasant and works well, and the atmosphere is there, with sailors shantying in calm weather and shouting during confrontations. The customisation of your captain and your ship is extensive, although some elements remain blocked behind the infamous “credit card barrier reef”. It must be said that the technical aspects of the title remain stuck in the past, with a game that is aesthetically displeasing, terribly rigid animations and very little interaction with the environment.
