What is it?: SD Gundam Battle Alliance is one of the newer Gundam games that was released back in 2022. It's a 3D beat-em/ RPG style of game that offers multiple mobile suits, each with unique abilities and attacks to help you take down waves of enemies and bosses that come your way. There is a main story, which follows you as a commander that is hurled in cyberspace to help stop the multiple timelines to collapse on each other and correct an anomalies in these timelines. While doing this, players are able to upgrade their suits stats and parts and team up with 2 other players to take on missions with different difficulty as you learn and grow with your suit and pilot skills.
The Good: The game looks fantastic, thanks to the Unreal Engine, and everything from the suits to level designs looks pretty well on the Xbox Series X/S. The story seems to be a decent length I would say, I clocked in around 60 or so hours which included grinding, and I do think that there are some bomb cutscenes. The game's story also do include some very interesting takes on how certain characters from different universes in Gundam would react to one another, and some really challenging bosses. Combat is also very well made for the most part. You can do some crazy combos with your mobile suit and for the most part, every mobile suit is unique so if you can't get into one suit, try another one and see how that goes. Each suit also fulfills a different one (Sharpshooter, All-Rounder, Infighter) which do have different strengths and weaknesses, so choose wisely.
The Meh: So while the game has some very cool parts to it, there are some meh qualities for it. First off, the amount of mobile suits available in the base game could be more in my opinion. I forgot how many there are exactly, I know its more than 70. which sounds good, but it's mainly just main character suits and I feel that it's a wasted opportunity to have some more suits included in this game. Gundam has TONS of suits to use and I feel they really dropped the ball a bit with the amount they could have included. I also believe while it's not too bad, the lock on system can get a bit touchy when dealing with certain enemy waves in different locations. Also, while I know Gundam is not known for as many iconic locations, I do wish some the maps have more activity in the background to make it feel like your more in the wars themselves. Some timelines like the 0079 Era does this well, while others not so much. Also, while the story is okay and all, I will say it's quite unoriginal sadly. Not too much of a bad things, but I wish it could have done a bit more to make it stand out more.
The Bad: My biggest gripe with this game is that I feel they miss out on TONS of timelines and content for the story. Gundam Seed/Destiny/Astray, G Fighter, Turn A, After Wars X, Victory, F91, and a few other timelines either had their stories shortened too much or not included at all, with only one or two mobile suits to represent them in the game. That is honestly quite sad, considering that this game could have been great to introduce even long time fans to some of these stories that don't get as recognized as much anymore when they should. Also, the 25 dollar price for the Season Pass along with this game's original asking price of 60 dollars, this feel like a lot for what it is. Like I still love the game, but it's not that serious of a game itself. I would say 30 bucks for base and 15 for pass would be the better ideal price for this game.
Overall: I do love this game a lot and I think Gundam fans will too. However, if you are new to Gundam I would not start off with this game. I feel that Bandai could have done more to give out a game to introduce to newcomers and also have more in depth gameplay of the different timelines. I will say this however, if this game goes on sale, I think its a great game to play when you have some off time to play.
Final Score: 7.4 out of 10… Expand
