EA Sports WRC comes to next-gen consoles as the predecessor to the Dirt Rally series and for the first time in years Codemasters brings back the official WRC license. This new title presents a quality in physics, game modes and sound that makes it one of the best WRC made so far.

Codemasters is once again offering us a delivery of its best Rally now with the official WRC license in its hands. It's fun, it's spectacular, and it's what the fans need. But we are not convinced by an inexplicable lack of innovation that sometimes seems to be a continuation of the previous WRC, which was not even theirs.

EA Sports WRC is probably the best there is. Begin to understand the need to be fast but cautious and any fan of the World Rally Championships should look to get behind the wheel of this one at the earliest of opportunities.

EA Sports WRC offers engaging gameplay that manages to bring all the thrills of the rally world to the screen, with an in-depth Career and many other satisfying modes. Despite some technical limitations, it is recommended to Rally and Racing Games fans as a promising new start for the franchise.

A joyous and rugged display of rally racing, with exquisite handling, lightly flecked by technical issues.

Going all-in on realism, with the high level of difficulty that entails, Codemasters has outdone itself with EA Sports WRC, delivering a stern rally racing challenge that pulls absolutely no punches. If you've got the minerals, then this is the rally game for you.

A well designed, technical tour de force that lives up to the enticing prospect of an officially licensed Codemasters rally game.

It should have been a clear candidate for racing game of the year. But the reality after the release is a bit sobering. Significant performance issues, not entirely convincing visuals and some game modes that are rather limited and unrefined, plus a clunky menu system. On the other hand, There is an interesting driving model, high-quality sound and excellent track design.

EA Sports WRC takes the class-leading feel of 2019’s Dirt Rally 2.0 and stuffs it into an officially licensed World Rally Championship experience, like a steel rod in Timo Rautiainen’s backside. Loose surface handling remains supreme, stages have been pumped up to 30 kilometre marathons, the audio is excellent, and the selection of modern and historical rally cars is achingly close to spot-on. However, just like a steel rod into your co-driver’s buttocks, there have also been some unwelcome, performance-related side effects and some serious lost position in the graphics race with the competition. Stuttering and tearing are common while racing on Xbox Series X, and the fidelity here falls well short of being a generational leap from Dirt Rally 2.0. With these technical shortfalls, combined with a lukewarm career mode and underdone customisation, EA Sports WRC feels like a great racing game trying to fight its way out of an unfinished one.
