Blackwind is a fun game that could be way better if it wasn’t for its camera, which acts again the experience at times.

Blackwind is a hack n slash Sci-Fi adventure title filled with gratuitous violence. You explore, work together, and gain new abilities to reach previously locked locations. It has a great story but the acting is wooden and tired.

It’s a massive shame that Blackwind is let down by the systems which should let it flow. If this came to market as a top-down twin-sticker with a few platforming elements and some decent metroidvania-styled puzzling, it would work really, really well. But the decision to add in a confused viewpoint is a killer; one that will have you concerned every time you fire things up.

A game that gets more frustrating the longer it trudges on.

After great first impressions showcasing fun gameplay and interesting characters, it quickly becomes a fascinatingly bad example of mech combat, lacking feedback, foresight, and fair play. Unbelievably boring offensive capabilities, a nonsensical story, and hilarious voice acting which tries its best to stand out. Unfortunately, it isn’t enough to stand out.

I struggled for days to get the game to run correctly on my Series X, and even then, once I could play I had to contend with glitching through the environments and fighting with the static camera which made seeing some enemies off screen impossible. Not to mention the aforementioned lack of any real goals or objectives that are posted for players to follow. There were times where I wondered around killing hordes of Raknos, just leveling up because I couldn’t figure out where to go next. Again, these are all odd design choices, and I really think there was budget cuts or something that stopped these developers from being able to properly finish this title. Sadly, as it is, I can’t really recommend this to anyone because whatever little good it may do, the bad outweighs it by quite a bit.

    Pros-
Some good puzzles here and there. The combat can be fun at times when the game is working properly. Sometimes the AI can get a chuckle
    Pros-
Some good puzzles here and there. The combat can be fun at times when the game is working properly. Sometimes the AI can get a chuckle but thats about it

    Cons-
The lack of objective markers make the game feel way more difficult than it needs to be. Some of the things you do in this game should be grounds for a more thematic discussion but the game just assumes that you go along with what is happening without questioning it. The combat is very unbalanced and feels brutally unfair at points. The camera is messy and gets so bad sometimes i see things i shouldnt and even fall through the floor of the world more often than not. The checkpoint system is so bad that it takes you back so far that you have to replay areas that were already a chore to get through and do them again.

    Conclusion:
I cannot recommend this game to almost anyone. Blackwind doesn’t feel like it’s as fleshed out as it should be. Some of its ideas could be interesting in better, more focused and balanced games, but in the way they come together here, my main feeling was frustration, and for a game as lighthearted and colorful as this, that’s a dizzying disappointment. There may have been a strong vision for what Blackwind could have been at one point, but it didn’t show up in the final product.
