Another solid entry for the series, Assassin's Creed Shadows offers a wonderfully rendered natural world, though it's not as unique as it once could have been. The typical mix of stealth and action gameplay is still enjoyable and is now split between two protagonists, though switching between them can be cumbersome. Fans of the franchise should be satisfied, if not exactly impressed.

Assassin's Creed Shadows finds peace and quiet amid a flurry of repetitive violence.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a beautiful, mostly fun game held back by head-scratching design decisions and nagging issues that have plagued the series for over a decade now. While it's far from a bad entry, it's the latest game in the series to fall short of reaching the soaring action highs of the beloved Ezio Trilogy or the epic RPG adventure of Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey.

Although Assassin’s Creed Shadows has some cumbersome flaws that can’t be overlooked, including ones that have been present in the series since its inception, it is a strong action-adventure game that I will likely keep investing in for weeks to come.

As one would expect, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is part of the saga’s line of terrific titles. This episode once again highlights all the expertise of the Ubisoft studios regarding historical reconstruction. Feudal Japan might be the game’s strongest feature, almost eclipsing the other new features. We should also mention the different fighting styles of the two heroes, which offer a welcome variety of gameplay. Nevertheless, the recurring flaws of the licence are still likely to disappoint some players, such as the obscure enemy reactions during infiltration phases. It is a real shame because it is not far from rekindling the spark of the glory days from a not-so-distant past. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.
