My brothers, my friends, and even my dad (who didn't have any idea what he was doing).

I always admired the mechanics of Yu-Gi-Oh as a card game, but since time has moved on and it's become less socially acceptable to play Yu-Gi-Oh now that I'm a grown-ass man, I figured it would be nice if I could satisfy that occasional pang of Yu-Gi-Oh nostalgia by playing this game.

Legacy of the Duelist is probably the most satisfying Yu-Gi-Oh video game I've ever played. I played the GBA games back when those were big, and this game is much more detailed (and has over 6,000 cards to collect). You also get to relive the duels of all five generations of the Yu-Gi-Oh TV series (Duel Monsters, GX, 5D's, Zexal, and a little bit of Arc-V). But I don't really care about any of those except for the original Duel Monsters series, since that was the one I grew up with. It covers a decent amount of that show, but not as much as I had hoped (the Noah arc isn't there at all, and I think there's a bunch of other stuff missing too). That said, most of the battles you care about are there from the beginning of the show up through the Battle City season. You can either use the story deck or your own custom deck for each duel, and you can even play as the opposing side if you want (giving you a chance to use Pegasus' deck against Yugi, rather than the other way around).

You also win all sorts of trinkets for completing individual duels, including signature cards, and a sizable amount of DP (duelist points) you can use to buy different packs. You can also make up to 10 customizable decks with the cards you get, which is pretty handy.

Yes, the game features online duels too, but I haven't gotten the chance to try those out yet (I'm afraid I'll get stomped since I haven't been playing long). But based on how in-depth the rest of the game is, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. I'll update this review if there are any glaring problems with the online.

The majority of the issues I have with the game are less about the features in the game and more about the game's presentation. What little character models there are are extremely underwhelming - seeing an ugly PS2-era Blue-Eyes White Dragon materialize out of your card leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately very few of these cards have these ugly animations. Most of the time it plays like you're playing the card game, with few interruptions.

Also, there are no clips from the anime to bridge the duels you complete, and you get no chance to explore the world. All you get is a list of duels to beat in chronological order, and some text-based retelling of the context behind it. Considering the fact that past games have let you explore the world, and the fact that the world Yu-Gi-Oh takes place in is actually a fairly interesting one, this is a missed opportunity.

On top of the other presentation-related complaints, the background of the playing arena rarely changes, and neither does the boring loop of music, making most duels feel same-y and of little consequence. I just switch on the Pandora app on Xbox One when I tire of the in-game music.

Overall though, if you're looking for a way to play the straight Yu-Gi-Oh card game, build custom decks, play competitively with people online, and relive the anime (or maybe discover it for the first time), this is a surprisingly good package for the seemingly hefty $20 price tag. Hey, it's either find some friends who aren't embarrassed to play Yu-Gi-Oh and shell out on expensive packs and decks for the real thing, or shell out the $20 for this game.

Personally, I'm all for the latter. :)

Yet, I just can't get over how horrible the UI looks. I can barely read anything and have had a few moment where I've killed my own monster thinking that an 1800 creature was a 1300 creature. The text is far too small in the duels. I find myself squinting constantly, which is strange because any dialogue text is easily twice as thick. I can't even make out the card images in my hand because they're so small.

There's also no cart catalogue to show you what you have or what you're missing. The only way to check your collection at all is to open up the deck editor. There's also no indication from the game on if you have all the cards in a certain booster pack or not, and being able to draw the same card an unlimited amount of times doesn't help the issue. I'm disappointed since even Magic Duels makes it so you can't get more of a card than you can use in a deck. It would be one thing if there was a trading system built into the game.

All in all it's a good way to play the digital game, but card collection is overly complicated to the point that I'd rather just stick with the sealed deck and draft mode.

A new Yu-Gi-Oh game that features the actual card game on console with a much larger library of cards.
The game doesn't have all the cards but it features most of them up to January 2015. You can recreate your real life deck again or make a deck of cards you don't have because you can't afford them because...you bought other games. This game does what a lot of yugioh games have done in the past. Feature a Yugioh card simulator. This time though you are able to play as Yugi facing off Kaiba or even a reverse duel in which you play as Kaiba vs Yugi which doesn't really advance the story line. The storyline in this game features moments from the original Yugioh series, GX, 5ds, Zexal and a brief Yugioh Arc-V encounter.

No interacting with these characters just a very short summarized story of the respective arcs as you play as the main characters/etc. Some of the endings aren't even complete unless you buy the dlc. Why is that? Well turns out because the American butchered 4kids versions didn't air some of the series(gx-5ds) full series. That is from the official twitch stream. Even with the dlc there are still story moments and duels missing. The extra duels are locked in a 4 $5 dlc day 1 transactions this game cost $19.99. Each series besides ARC V has a dlc tag of $5 a piece that comes with a few extra duel opponents and 2 starter decks each. This game becomes $39.99 for a Yugioh card simulator. Now if you enjoy playing the Yugioh card game you will love it. Whats nice is playing through the series you get to see how the game has evolved over the years. Its quite nice to see how the game used to be played from a slow crawl before it became a mass summoning of monsters and activations of spells and traps, changing the field constantly where sometimes you'd rather have cards in your graveyard or remove from play zone instead of your deck. If you dislike the newer cards you can easily load up against opponents in an older era to avoid it which could be favorable. Online is smooth its really the same. If someone rage quits you still get the win also and they get squat. Even if you lose you still get stuff...in fact you could easily surrender and rack up easy duel points....because...who cares about win/loss ratio. This doesn't include the tag mode. It may include it later as dlc but right now it doesn't have it...and thats a shame. It does have the Battle pack game mode. Where you basically make a random deck with random cards from packs of cards against others doing the same. If you enjoy yugioh there is fun to be had. If you are looking for story or character customization. Its not here. the story is weak and the game feels like copy and paste just more new cards instead of buy this dlc pack for newer cards.
The end result is just another yugioh card simulator making you buy the game all over again, not bringing much new to the table.

This game advertises day 1 dlc as a good thing and this game "...brings never-before-seen next generation Yu-Gi-Oh! experience"; which is incredibly false. Just because a game is on PS4 or Xbox 1 does not in any way make it a brand new experience. This game is for the really hardcore fans who don't mind buying the same game again or those who haven't played yugioh in a long time or never have played it for a PS2/PSP graphic era duel board.
