Dull, dated gameplay and irritating controls. Not an enjoyable experience.

Yakuza 0 combines in a single game elements from a story driven game with brainless fighting mechanics. However, this game has something that has had me hooked despite those mechanics, and is a brilliant story, with a lot of script changes that have made worth smashing the buttons nonsensically during the hundreds of fights in the game. The tenths of cinematic cutscenes between the game chapters, some longer than a TV show, add to the story, but those merits get shadowed by the lack of voice translations, other the original japanese ones. This is probably the game with more dialogues I played in my entire life, sometimes longer than they need to be, and all those dialogues are spoken in japanese and need to be read from the subtitles of you do not understand the language, as is my case. Nevertheless, the story is that good that gets you playing until the end of the game, however, I might need quite some time until I face another Yakuza game. Expand

game is very subjective if you're gonna like it. it's well designed for its genre; it offers a relatively large open world of progressive adventuring without being excessively large; its battling style is relatively complex and you can progressively become better and better at it while the story is fitting for a crime story. however for my tastes it was very excessive in verticalgame is very subjective if you're gonna like it. it's well designed for its genre; it offers a relatively large open world of progressive adventuring without being excessively large; its battling style is relatively complex and you can progressively become better and better at it while the story is fitting for a crime story. however for my tastes it was very excessive in vertical progression design; the game has you doing repetitive mundane tasks in order to have minor progress every time for minor benefits in battle (if you take the money system out of the picture (e.g. by using a trainer) the game feels extremely barebones for little gameplay since the repetition for more and more money is what gave a lot of its apparent depth); the battle style is subjective if you're gonna like it and you might like it if you're into that kind of genre but I personally found it cumbersome and repetitive and not worth the trouble going the full road of perfecting my gameplay for this game while the story was nothing extraordinary but I definitely can't give it a very low score because it's obviously subjectively great if you're into that kind of genre. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yakuza 0 is a decent, enjoyable game as a stand-alone. I truly enjoyed the story and it really touched me on so many levels with the final showdown probably being my favorite across the series. However, as a prequel, it does a terrible job of delivering answers to mysteries not revealed in the series. There’s mostly nothing new nor impressive that can be learned about Kiryu’s past. Questions like what made Kiryu ink a dragon? How does he know Majima? How did he develop the Dragon Style in fighting, etc. This is a huge part of who he is and yet there’s no mention of it in the main story. Even the questions that were answered were unsatisfactory, to say the least. I believe they failed to capitalize on this opportunity so far as I want a second-parter to Yakuza 0 just to add these missing links to Yakuza 1 and explore the Kiryu-Majima relationship further.

Satisfaction is not found with Majima’s backstory either, you’d think someone as crazy as him would have a major reason for who he is today— opposite to Yakuza 4’s backstory. No, Majima just causally goes “well, now I’m gonna causally change personas from chic well-balanced lord of the night to a Japanese Joker”. Demon style? No. Why does he carry a knife? Is it significant? It must be, right? Nope, not mentioning that in a prequel.

The money system is a very bizarre choice. Money completely lost any value in this game where you can be a multimillionaire to upgrade abilities that require billions. The longer dialogues, literally thousands of words in some instances, really put me off.

I have mixed feelings about this game, it did not feel like an open world if I compare it to GTAV in terms of how big it was and how many places you could visit and how many side missions you could encounter its like a small neighborhood (from GTAV); However, the main story kept me going on every step of the way.
    Graphically its average.
Gameplay is a positive point where you can

Yakuza 0 is already one of the greatest experiences on PlayStation 4, and now it is one of the best on Xbox One too. It may not have many enhancements for gamers who play on X, but it was already a looker, with a high frame rate to begin with. This is one of the glitziest and brightest games out there, and not relying on the most advanced technology meant the team could push an older engine to new heights. Dropping 40 hours means not even seeing half of what Yakuza 0 has to offer. It is a huge package of value that seemingly never stops giving.

Today, three years after Western release on Xbox One, Yakuza 0 still translates well as an engaging and fun experience, particularly for those who love a good story. The graphics are slightly dated but nothing to be upset about, and only the somewhat foreign notion of the invisible wall cutting off stairways and paths is the only thing to be a bother. This mechanic has been changed over the years so to see it still thriving here immediately dates the game, but none of this is enough to make for a bad experience. If you enjoy the Yakuza franchise or need a jumping off point to get into the franchise, Yakuza 0 is a fantastic place to start.
