They obviously spuffed out this title in a few months. Another rushed poor quality WWE game. Unlocking characters and items is a grind due to the implementation of microtransactions.

The game is very overpriced and while it might be somewhat generous with giving currency at the start, it eventually becomes a grind. The superstars each have different styles and those who share styles also share preset move sets which makes them less unique to play as aside from a different finisher. There’s a terrible haze effect when viewing characters in the superstar menu as well. There’s a terrible haze effect when viewing characters in the superstar menu as well. A big gripe I have is how much momentum you lose when reversing moves. When you’re having a back and forth match with either AI (which are very dumb) or a friend, it just vanishes after 2 or 3 reversals which makes it hard to store a finisher, a stupid move for an arcade like game. Rather than one button assigned to reversing however, the four face buttons are chosen instead and the prompt will always be random. The only good thing I can say is that the online performs much better than previous titles where the game can lag and you have to predict reversal timing a full second in advance. Over all though, definitely not worth the money even on a discount. Just keep playing All Stars Expand

Combat is terrible and clunky, and is worsened by the fact that theres only what 4 or 5 styles of characters and within those styles LITERALLY EVERY CHARACTER HAS THE SAME MOVESET AND ABILITIES! There is literally nothing that seperates Roman from The Rock except the visual difference. Absolute garbage.

That is all not to even mention the 2K micro-transaction goldmine. This game is way

That is all not to even mention the 2K micro-transaction goldmine. This game is way overpriced in the first place for what it is, then you want to charge more for it just to play with my favorite wrestlers out of the box? Yes, you can unlock them by grinding in game, but when a game says it has a roster of contained characters I expect to be able to use all those characters when I fire the game up. Not have to choose between grinding through matches that honestly are already boring after 3-4 plays or paying more money for a superstar I want just to find out that he is gameplay-wise an exact replicant of one that I could already play with.

Better luck next time 2K, you get a dead zero from me on this one. Can only hope WWE has the sense to move the license soon to a studio that will actually respect the fans and deliver a quality experience like THQ used to.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Conceptually a game everyone can pick up and play, sadly is not enough to have longevity in any collection.

    Pro's
    1. A wrestling game that plays more arcade abd less simulation. Variety is a good thing

    Con's
    1. The micro-transaction polluted the game to the point you grind or spend possibly hundreds of dollars to play at its full capacity. Gamers despise this and here we are exploiting the pockets of a customer just to enjoy the game. Its one thing to utilize this in small doses, but Battlegrounds exploits this with everything in the game. It becomes problematic to the point where features such as Create a Wrestler is useless unless you grind hundreds of hours just to remotely make a unique character....or spend tons to do so.
    2. Create a Wrestler is very shallow itself. Not being able to generally create actual wrestlers to fit inside this arcade world is a shamble. Let alone having to purchase more slots to potentially create more wrestlers is disgraceful. Wanna upload your creation to the world? Sorry... You can't as its not an option.
    3. The repetitive game nature makes longevity of playing the game obsolete once you have spent countless hours playing Battleground Mode and Story Mode. The rinse and repeat nature is fun for an hour every blue moon, but soon enough you will tire because of its elementary level gameplay mechanics and lack of any depth. Arcade or not, this game could have expanded upon the mechanics deeper than it did.

We can continue to pick out problems, but these 3 problems are incredibly big flaws that detract the game from being any better than a weekend rental.

Just a cartoon fighting game does not compare to the actual wrestling games of the last 25 years. Very confusing to do any moves. Computer counters like crazy and once again this is not a wrestling game. Very bad.

This game is utter garbage. I wanted a break away from the realism but i didn't want a trash title with a lack of a story told through comic strips and sub-par gameplay. I would rather buy WWE 2K20 and all its DLCs then play this game. The gameplay is so broken as is the AI and with the story being told through comic strips it feels more like meaningless matches instead of a story. I'dThis game is utter garbage. When is 2K gonna stop pushing us around with these terrible, low quality, "games" and instead give us a great game like 2K14, 12, SVR08, SVR11, or even 19. Expand

The game has tons of items to unlock and an overall good amount of stuff to do, but all of this really falls flat when the gameplay gets so repetitive. No matter what mode you play, there isn’t much gameplay variety outside of the standard gameplay mechanics. You don’t have the options that you get in the usual WWE 2K yearly release and it all wears thin fast and becomes a chore to play. The game is honestly fun at first, but it just doesn’t hold up well in the long run. I honestly prefer WWE 2K20 over Battlegrounds and that’s saying a lot with all the problems that game had.

The game will perpetually get compared to WWE All Stars and I think it’s fair. I have to admit that through my rose colored glasses, I remember All Stars as the better overall title at launch, but the lack of roster depth (including no women) and the fact that it died off because its parent studio did really hurt its potential. The fact that Battlegrounds still that potential to be discovered and 2K can do so much more with it makes this an interesting title to watch, and one I’d recommend giving a shot if it intrigues you enough.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is a fun and needed change for the series, that became too gritty and complex. Now this game is closer to the 90's arcade games and may not be as deep as previous WWE games, but its fun as hell, and if you are one of those who love wrestling, you'll like this one.
