Expand

First up, the gameplay is great. It has happened on a number of times, that I have been put on a team, and there was some brilliant teamwork going on - more so than other games. There are a massive variety of playstyles, and tanks, available. The game definitely rewards more methodic play than might be seen elsewhere - if you die, you're out, and it's back to the garage, but if you can survive, and last the round, putting shots on target, you'll wrap up with a nice chunk of silver and xp.

There are a lot of mechanics which can be confusing to understand, and it does take a bit of time. What's important to understand, is that this game has a lot of mechanics that you would expect from a simulator, so there may be plenty of small things you're missing out on, which might be why you may not have killed that guy you shot at earlier, or whatever.

The game does definitely become a grind as you move on through the tanks, but only at the very late stages of each tech tree. Every now and again, there may be some small things which might seem crazy, but these are very, very rare. There are microtransactions, and though they aren't necessary, you can get more in game currency, and so on and so forth.

Nonetheless, this game is an absolute blast. It is highly entertaining, with a massive variety of tanks, and a large number of maps, and a fair few explosions to sweeten the deal. There is nothing quite like you and your whole team just rolling out at the start of a round, ploughing through a village, and proceeding to trade shots with 15 hostile tanks. Very definitely worth a look.

Truly deserves a 10, but it can sometimes feel like a grind. It is definitely one of my favourite releases this year.

World of Tanks is a great concept. But it’s rigged. At its core, WoT is a pay to win game. But it’s rigged. At its core, WoT is a pay to win game. The WoT community is divided into 2 groups: 1) Those who adamantly support the game; 2) Those who claim the game intentionally throws matches. I played it with a few friends hoping to replace a few boring shooters. I noticed that matches were nearly always one-sided and that outcomes of individual tank battles were ludicrous. I reached out to other random players and heard similar opinions. But its problems don’t end there. Once the giddiness of tank warfare wore off, so did my hopes that WoT would earn a place in my game library.

When forming a platoon, players cannot select tanks in tiers higher than their platoon leaders, even if matches allow them. So if the platoon leader selects a Tier III tank, everyone is capped at that tier. If a platoon member wants to play a Tier IV tank, either the leader has to select one, the group must reform so the Tier IV player can become leader thus removing the cap. Regardless of the cap, players will always encounter more powerful, higher tier tanks in every match. Not much fun for people just starting out.

I play sub Tier IV tanks because of the larger player pool. At lower tiers, it’s obvious tank classes aren’t balanced. Light tanks absolutely dominate. There’s really no need to run other classes. Some light tanks move at 3x’s the speed of other tanks, have strong armor, and can pack the same punch as tank destroyers. In the majority of matches I’ve played, light tanks are the top performers. And it’s not unusual to see one with 5 or more kills. Enemy light tanks can deflect dozens of shells from friendlies and then flank around to destroy them all. Even worse, purchased tanks like the Locust are popular because of their impressive stats. Unfortunately, they exist solely to make money. Anticompetitive matches are less important than Wargaming’s need to monetize everything. And some of the best players sink a lot of money into WoT.

All tank stats are misleading since the effectiveness of weapons and armor is arbitrary. Short range heavy machine guns are regularly more devastating than 75mm Howitzer canons at distance. A 105mm tank destroyer can volley 10 rounds at a distant light tank only to be destroyed by a single 37mm shell. Also, consistently aiming for the weakest armor points yield consistently crappy results. I pommeled tanks with 10+ “critical hits” on their sides and backs without destroying them. And then, out of pure luck, I’ll fire into a random cluster of trees and destroy a medium tank with a one shell. Yes, that has happened. Such unpredictability begs the question: How much skill is actually involved?

Better shells cost money, and they’re insanely expensive. Players can use match rewards to buy ammo. But rewards are anemic, so even strong players can earn negative rewards each match if they use upgraded shells. Of course, Wargaming’s solution is to use real money and stock up on supplies. Players can also spend money to instantly train their tank crews thus removing the need to grind out experience. And the advantages stack up as players spend more.

Unlocking one top tier tank could take hundreds of hours, and WoT offers dozens of them. Spending thousands of hours to unlock a handful of top tier tanks that I may or may not like is an intolerable commitment. For players wanting to buy premium, the process is a wee bit faster.

Like most multiplayer games today, lag is bad. It’s Destiny bad. Too often shells pass thru targets. And fast moving tanks are advantageous because WoT will fail to accurately register their locations making them nearly impossible to damage.

One of WoT’s biggest problems is the disappearing tanks. Tanks vanish in every match. They disappear all the time. That’s right. Enemy tanks just vanish while taking damage. They’ll vanish while moving. According to the forums and Wargaming, WoT’s spotting mechanics are the reason tanks disappear. When tanks hide in bushes or stop moving, their camo rating increases. So if a player spots a tank, it can “disappear” because its camo rating increased by remaining stationary or finding cover. However, this doesn’t explain how moving tanks disappear just one hundred feet ahead in the open while charging friendly positions. WoT’s spotting mechanics are absolutely horrid. Combine this with lag, and it’s more frustrating than not.

WoT lacks polish as it’s filled with glitches, omissions and imbalances that shouldn’t exist 5 years after launch. No matter the armor, ammo, or stats tanks possess, battle outcomes feel random at best, and rigged at worst. Many people share this sentiment. Ultimately, WoT is free to play, but players willing to spend money will have access to more tanks, more skills, and more supplies. Even so, players’ skills are trumped by the arbitrary system that dictates how battles play out. So throw down lots of cash and roll the dice, because that’s how success is determined in WoT.

This game is free to play initially until you get to around tier 5 where the game becomes an intolerable grind to upgrade or by new tanks. At tier 5, you realise that 50% of this game is "locked" because you need to either spend THOUSANDS of hours grinding for a single tank or spend HUNDREDS of pounds to make the grind slightly easier (although it would still take ages even after paying). So for most ordinary gamers, you will NEVER reach the higher tier tanks unless you play 24/7 or pay up. The business model for this game is disgraceful and is like dangling a carrot infront of gamers to get them to pay.

I haven't even got round to the unbalanced games which include horrendously mismatched tank tiers, ridiculous hit registration and what feels like match fixing (all exist to get you to pay no doubt). The game is also boring and repetitive, with only one multiplayer gamemode.

Oh and it should be called "world of campers" because most players camp because they are scared of being two shot killed by someone with "premium" ammo or a superior tank. Because if they die theres no respawn. Just waiting until the next game. How lame is that?

Its such a shame because the game COULD have been a great "tank call of duty" if it was a normal, £40 multiplayer game in the shops. But the shady business model of this "free to play" game ruins it.

Avoid this game. It will only frustrate you.

Let me start off by saying it's a fun, strategical, teamwork-based game. When you first start out you will probably be very bad, if not then you defy all logic. It takes some practice/learning of controls and mechanics for things to really start to click. Eventually though, it's a blast. If you play alot of FPS games you will find this new and different in a great way. It's a lot slower and more strategy based which is cool.

Now for the free to play aspects. If you never spend a dime on the game you will find it difficult (but by no means impossible) to be successful. I recommend setting aside ~$30 and that's about it to hold you over for a long time. Look up guides on how to manage you silver/gold/xp and that will help a ton. The recommend purchase though is by far a premium tank. Premium tanks are tanks that are typically a little worse than the ones people train up by playing the game normally. What they are good at though is making lots of silver (thus decreasing the time to grind) and training your tank's crew. That one purchase of a premium tank goes a long way to helping you in most aspects of the game. There are other premium purchases, and some of them make a little sense, but many don't. Again, look up guides for what is best here.

This is a game with a pre-existing very strong community for the PC version. I've had a great time with it and my main point from all of this is while there is certainly the potential for one to dump lots of $$$ on various aspects of the game, there is little reason to and people have been very successful without doing so.

the party system is designed as 2tiers +- of your tier at tier 4 UNLESS You're A LIGHT TANK then its +-3 AND unless you're the chaffee witch has max tier searching so you can pick a tier 5 say heavy if your leader had a tier 4 light because its based of the max tier search no matter what tier he pick. This is not a call of duty game you will not have a good time if you play it like one because there's no re spawning and tanks with higher camo than you in foliage and not moving will spot you and kill you before you spot them and since if you're moving your camo factor is super low the lowest camo factor on a tank is heavy tanks and highest would be lights TD and mediums. So yes if you are new you will have a bad time sorry mate.

That is what makes it one of the worst games. It has solid mechanics but unfortunately no competition and, thus, doesn't improve but gets tedious and non-enjoyable and makes you regret. If you really want that shiny "good" tank you better pay or enjoy the horrendous grind of terrible balance, matchmaking and mechanics (in short, even though you aim at something doesn't mean you hit something). Everything else is better.

DO NOT SPEND TIME ON THIS. This is an abomination. I switched to PC and never looked back, although I had many tier X and premium tanks on console (many thousand games).

It's inferior in every way, e.g., the UI is horrible - like a child has done it - the game feedback is outraciously bad (no damage numbers, no indication what ammo damaged you), the aiming is laughable, the spotting is unprecise, the crew is non-relevant, the maps are unintelligent (they changed some PC maps and also added console exclusives, without any thought process it seems), the economy is there to screw you over etc.

This isn't just a simpler version, it's a different game altogether and a bad one at that. Why play COD on mobile when you can play the real game; why waste time on this game. No reason except you don't have a PC.

Some tanks you can only buy with gold and they can cost more than 12,000 gold. These tanks are the only ones that allow you to get the special XP from them that you can convert into gold. But the amount of grinding it would take to get those 12,000 gold tanks is... so much math I can't even. Worst part is these tanks aren't top tier tanks. So you'll end up replacing them with tanks you can buy with the easily acquired silver pieces. Tanks have 10 tier levels, the gold tanks stop at tier 8 so yeah you'll replace them.

Only reason to get gold is to buy those tanks so if you surpass that level then it's a waste. Besides 12,000 gold on the online store cost $50 for tier 8 tanks. A vehicle in a game... cost you $50 real dollars. Just say hell no. Unless you got money to burn, it's a waste.

As for the actual gameplay, the game is a lot of fun. Easily something you would enjoy with couple friends. It's funny as hell to watch new players get used to the controls, watching them slide down a cliff ass-backwards getting shot at by 5 different enemies while they're screaming bloody murder lol.

And yes the controls suck, they're supposed to, These are old ass tanks... they didn't control very well in real life. You're not going to be Tokyo drifting around everywhere. Although drifting in circles around an enemy tank while you're blasting them with your cannon would be badass. But yeah these controls are hard to get used to. Press left stick for cruise control, trust me it helps.

As for some of the negative aspects, this game does lose its charm after a while. Once you hit those horrible grinding tiers the game just because busy work. Oh and of course you'll have enemies that went ahead and paid ridiculous amounts of money for top tier tanks that get pitted against you in your rust bucket. I have to imagine this was done to persuade you into buying the high end tanks... it has the typical "free" to play tropes that invest these games.

I still recommend picking it up and trying it out.

This was a good little game that required skill and dedication to master, the rewards were a slow and steady progression though any number of historically based tanks with ever more powerful weapons and tougher opponents. Premium tanks were purchased only and limited in numbers.
A series of baffling 'updates' that no one asked for have followed, Cartoon Mode, Mercenaries brought garish, ugly, concocted vehicles that ruined the fine balance of the game, and were in some cases over powered. The player base dropped dramatically after these two updates alone. The dwindling player numbers forced the cross-console aspect to be introduced. Having learnt little from their prescriptive way of simply adding content that nobody wanted, the sponsored seasons with the likes of WWE and Hasbro brought little help in arresting the decline.
Then update 6.0 came along with all the competence and style of a train wreck. Content was removed, it had more bugs than a roadside mattress and the game was ruined.
The tiny number of devoted players left voiced concern and most quit the game in 2021.
Notwithstanding WGC's success in destroying the game, and desperate to attract new players, they adopted a system where, basically they are paying the players to play the game with ridiculously easy 'earn ops' or seasons that see WGC giving away tanks for free, that you might once have paid real $ for.
Get the irony; This was once a free to play game - now they have to bribe people to play.
Okay, history lesson over. What's the game like in 2022?
Well you'll be happy to know that despite taking up 80gb of your hard drive, you will be playing 15 v 15 on postage stamp size maps that are nearly ancient enough to qualify for UNESCO heritage status in one battle dimension, for maybe 3 minutes, with a maximum of 3 friends.
After ruining the original WWII game and player numbers at an all time record low, they released the 'Modern Warfare' update before fixing the OG thereby splitting an already small number of players even further so that Bots often make up half of the teams.
Despite 8 years of practice the highly publicised new tank lines are worthless.
So, they gave away high tier premium tanks with such reckless abandon that the player skill, in what is a tricky game, just didn't match and matches are now a series of complete rollovers and completely unlike what it was like when most of the reviews were written.
So rather than address the skill imbalance, WGC started to rig games in favour of new players and didn't admit to it until the community called them out.
So as a new player all you can really expect now is seal clubbing veterans doing you over so they can brag about their stats.
The final chapter was another thing that the players didn't want, Wheeled vehicles which have transformed the game into a Mario Kart shooter.
    What a change..
But for anyone curious about on how to ruin a game, you'll find no better case study.

Very regular game, 0 realism, too casual and 0 simulation. The best thing is the number of tank licenses that the game has.

A decent game however very arcade like feeling to it, feels like the baby of Call of Duty and War Thunder. Not much to complain about except the blatant pushing of the monetization as well as it being very much reliant on you paying to progress

I went 132 kills 0 deaths in a day and a half of playing after work and all wins to dying every match little to no kills. The game can get glitchy. This is the most advanced and maybe even the best edition of World of Tanks. This is how the PC version should look. [10/2015, p.52]

World of Tanks on Xbox One is simply a technical upgrade of the 360 version and retains its strengths and weaknesses, but in a nicer way. It's still free, and can be played in multiplayer cross-platform.
