Wheelspin Frenzy offers a passable racer that functions and performs quite well throughout the entirety of play. The biggest drawback here is that the game is just far too basic to stand anywhere near as tall as its peers. The lack of meaningful progression and the bog-standard visuals certainly doesn’t help in this regard. Though with that said, if you’re simply looking for a quick and simplistic arcade racer, Wheelspin Frenzy should do the trick.

Despite all the frustrations, this is an enjoyable little racer in both single-player and multiplayer. The achievements are unnecessarily grindy, the menus are confusing, and the graphics aren’t pretty, but the gameplay and driving mechanics are solid enough.

Wheelspin is slightly improved in multiplayer, but that requires having at least one enthusiastic person with a good sense of humor in the same room. Even so, this title is short on features, short on consistent gameplay and short on charm. Wheelspin Frenzy should be avoided.

The main reason why these racing game’s made me experience a great deal of fun was because no race ever felt the same and even though they did eventually become repetetive I still returned back to the racing game’s a couple of days later. Wheelspin Frenzy the new 90’s style racer that’s made its way to the Xbox One is a game that brings me back a lot of fond memories and whilst it suffers with a few shortcomings these fond memories made me forget about them in the end. The gameplay has been done to perfection in my opinion because it has that classic retro formula but it also carries with it a modern touch in some instances. Technichally the game holds up really well and I didn’t bump into any problems that affected the fun factor, but be prepared because the game can be quite difficult. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t so difficult that it can’t be completed but you will experience a few frustrating moments every now and then. The frustrating moments mainly come from the silly mistakes that you can make because resetting your car to get back on track can seem like it takes forever at times and this can be quite annoying especially if you were doing well. Thankfully though I only really seemed to get annoyed by this when I was playing on my own. Without a doubt the best way to play this game is with friends because no race ever feels the same when playing the game this way. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t fun when you play the game on your own because it is, it’s just that when you play the game on your own for long periods it does become a lot more repetitive than when your playing with friends. Something that surprised me about this game was the amount of content it has. There are lots of tracks and cars for you to get to grips with and the best thing is that each track and car has quite a bit of variety. Another aspect of the game that has some variety is the different environments you race in. Visually the game is nothing spectacular but it has lot of charm and when you combine the visuals with the sound design you do get a true 90’s retro feel, which is great. At the end of the day fans of early racing game’s will thoroughly enjoy what Wheelspin Frenzy has to offer and I for one enjoyed my time with the game. It isn’t perfect but in the end it gets more things right than it gets wrong and it does enough to get a thumbs up from me. Expand
