Quite a nice narrative experience which is not to be missed. Moving story, interesting gameplay, the whole little universe is carefully crafted and it is a pleasure to play it through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most overrated game of all time?

It's been 5 years since this game had come out when I finally got around to playing this as it was leaving Game Pass. I heard about it being an easy 1000 Gamerscore so thought I'd spend a day sorting that out. Before I did that though, I did want to experience this well regarded and well awarded game, including winning a BAFTA for best game. Needless to say, my expectations were understandably high.

It was probably the most disappointing gaming experience I've ever had. What an absolute let down. This disappointment has nothing to do with the "gameplay", I knew what I was getting into regarding that. I was expecting some amazing story but after hearing/reading the first book/episode, I knew what the rest of the game was going to be. Just trying to be some depressing story to try and tug on my heart strings but like, I didn't care about any of these characters.

It would be like going to watch the first Avengers or something with no prior knowledge of the characters but seeing a little 5 minutes flashback about how they all died. Like, who cares? I certainly didn't. Why did this get such amazing reviews? I'm baffled.

I guess the one saving grace for me was the Barbara flashback. That was extremely cool! Give me a whole game like that please.

I'm a huge fan of walking simulators. This one just isn't for me. Loved Beginner's Guide, Gone Home, Ethan Carter, Firewatch. This one's just not as good. What all of those others have in common is a central thesis, an aesthetic and some emotional payoff. The catharsis at the end is important for a narrative focused game, because there's no other content really. It's all narrative. TheI'm a huge fan of walking simulators. This one just isn't for me. The catharsis at the end is important for a narrative focused game, because there's no other content really. It's all narrative. The problem with this one is that's it's a handful of vignettes, but the end of each one is kind of a joke. It's tragic, but silly, but not funny enough to be good. They plant many seeds early on about what's going on with the father and the brother who went missing, but there are no answers. The answers are all whimsical nonsense and the deep sense of mystery is never resolved by the end. The actual ending is super predictable. I just wanted some resolution to any of it. Even emotionally. All of the games I mentioned have an abstract quality to them, and none of them fully explain everything. I just feel like there's an emotional payoff that this game is completely missing. It left me completely unsatisfied. The vignettes themselves are somewhat entertaining, pretty imaginative. I'm just not as much for the novelty. If that's your bag, you'll probably still like it. Expand

Game between walking simulator and narrative we walk in the house to see what happened to the family of Edith, the game is short, the family stories are nice but we remain without answers at the end of the game in my opinion

There is no gameplay. It is a very short game where all you are really doing is walking in a straight line and clicking "next". It's okay to "listen" to the story if you get it for free with gamepass or something else but don't expect a video game.

It's beautiful. Honestly, a magnificent piece of art with some amazing storyline, amazing artworks and surprising gameplay. It's a short game, but it feels great. Discovering the story of each individual character was a great adventure. Very thoughtful gameplay.

I clearly don't know where to begin. This game blown me away. I wasn't expecting something like this since it's just a 2-3 hours long story telling-narrative game. I was prejudiced; but the story is so original. No commentary needed on gameplay since you are just walking through places to places. Audio, atmosphere, graphics are above average for a game at this genre.
    Conclusion: This game

The story-telling is amplified even more by the variety of gameplay styles, the motion and appearance of the text, and the variety of story-telling techniques. At the same time, I understand why people would not like this game. It's very short, only around three hours, and the gameplay is not the focus. If you go in expecting some kind of in-depth, complex gameplay, you're in the wrong place. However, if you go in lacking any expectations or looking for a solid story, this is an experience unlike any other. I have a lot more to say about this game, but it's much better if you experience it for yourself. Expand

What Remains of Edith Finch is an absolutely beautiful and emotionally complex game. Despite a certain sense of morbidity in telling so many tales of death, the game is truly about the celebration of life. Despite all their differences, each family member is remembered more for who they were than how they were lost. This is a wonderful little tale that uses every second to the fullest, and truly should not be missed.

What Remains of Edith Finch knows its niche from the beginning and rarely strays, resulting in a cohesive experience that I was never jolted out of. It elicits the strangest mixture of emotions, and its different modes of storytelling are second to none. The controls don’t translate seamlessly from PC to Xbox One, but you don’t play this game for the controls; you play for the story, and the story is gripping.
