    There’s some roughness around its edges and it does frustrate in certain aspects, but Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground does do a good job at being accessible for newcomers to the strategy genre while adding tons of replayability, as long as you enjoy the roguelike grind that follows. While it feels priced a little high, the value is there if you’re willing to sink the hours into the lengthy and challenging campaign.

    Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground is a good game with some issues. The new unlockable units, the story line, and the whole setup of the universe happily draws you in. Yet some strange design decisions only come together to push you away again. With a little tweaking, this could be a great game, but the way things are set up does it no favours.

    Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground is a disappointingly mediocre tactical game. The bits of quality game design and pretty graphics that make up the core of it are overwhelmingly obscured by a frustrating single-player and multiplayer grind, then layered over by a thick paste of bugs, inconsistent rules, and an overall lack of content. Underwhelming to say the least.

    Considering it’s the first videogame adaptation of the latest edition of Games Workshop’s famous miniature wargame, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Stormground really is quite a success. The Canadian studio Gasket Games offers us a very convincing, fun and addictive turn-based and tactical roguelite game experience. Indeed, the core of the gameplay is focused on skirmishes with fewer than fifteen units present at the same time and does not offer the tremendous battles that can be experienced with the miniature game. However, the battles are dynamic and tactical enough to satisfy the experienced players and sufficiently accessible to attract some new ones. The fact that there are only three factions may also disappoint, but choosing the faction wisely will have its importance and will enable the gameplay to be different each time. If the title finds its audience, other locations and factions could soon join the fight. That would be well deserved.

While I could have done with some more cinematic, X-Com style camera angles on this one, I'm still really digging the experience. I like how the battles tend to last 10-15 minutes, so it fits well into the workday and totally bombing a run isn't the end of the world. Your achievements carry over into the next attempt. Judging by the quality (or lack thereof) of their review I figured there was something worth seeing here.

    That's right, I admit it, I bought this game to spite a review-bombing troll and my only regret is that I bought the game on Xbox instead of PC. It's not very well suited for a controller. Other than that my only complaint is the UI, which is atrocious.

    The tactical gameplay is interesting and the three factions all feature unique mechanics to make them feel distinct. The addition of roguelite mechanics seems like a novel idea for this genre as well. If your commander dies it's game over and any other units killed in battle are lost for good, though you get a limited number of revives. New units, and gear/skills to customize them, are acquired as you progress. The procedurally generated nature of the campaign means the game is heavy on replayability but light on narrative.

    This game is definitely rough around the edges but I enjoy it. I would hesitate to recommend it to someone who isn't already a fan of the genre or setting.    … Expand
