I cannot remember a time that I played a game that made me angry just by looking at it. There may be some potential behind the idea - War Theatre definitely has a place that it wanted to go. Sadly, we will never know what that was since the game is marred by a tiresome excuse for gameplay and hideous visuals.

The artisticWar Theatre surpisingy draws your attention with it’s more than adequate visuals and low price of entry for Xbox fans to enjoy. The artistic style of this game stands out with its capturing of the hellish nature of a ruined land marked by devastation in a way while also remaining beautiful in its own way. Gameplay is something likely familiar to anyone who has played one of any number of strategic war games. Each turn your units can move, which is affected by terrain and attack boundaries based on the type of unit and its own abilities. Combat features a rather simple dynamics as infantry bests air which bests tanks which best infantry. If the map includes water sources, units get thrown in which are essentially modified versions of infantry - tanks. Positioning your support and some degree of planning is also essential to victory. Each army also gets a special character whose abilities are what really tailors your game style along with similar combat sets aside from each unique leader. Learning of the heroes abilities can be a bit of a learning curve and a little more tutorial could have eased this learning curve from my time with War Theatre. The core game is fun and playing a battle typically doesn't take all that long so it’s served well in short or long play sessions. Overall a pretty fun tactical game for Xbox One fans of the genre, simple yet interesting once you’ve got a grasp of the mechanics within the game. Be sure to check out each army to see what suits your play strategy. Expand
