    This leaves a loving homage to Castlevania which doesn’t really advance its ideas. It’s faithful to a fault, right down to the bars that run down either side of the screen, locking it into the aspect ratio of a boxy cathode-ray TV. Timespinner could easily be a long-lost classic of the 16-bit era, a cartridge exhumed from a dusty storeroom and ported to Xbox. If you’re in need of a blast from the past, that could be perfect – but don’t expect something that can compete with the best modern Metroidvanias. [Issue#180, p.90]

    Timespinner's presentation is metroidvania based me which in turn means as a fan I enjoyed the retro design. Timespinner Immediately gives you the Castlevania vibe and that is a good thing as it's a classic series to tilt your cap to. Despite the retro vibe, Timespinner is not a clone as it introduces its own unique mechanics as you progress and the mechanics do make the gameplay more interesting and give it depth. Timespinner's combat always felt fresh no matter how many times you ended up in combat. I would however have liked to have been challenged a little more because the variety of weapons you can use made defeating the creative bosses feel almost too easy. I would’ve also enjoyed being able to explore a more which it isn’t always possible due to the map size present in game. In terms of content though the game offers you a solid amount and provides a very interesting story that makes your journey enjoyable. Timespinner offers you a retro-fueled experience that is very enjoyable and it gets the most important aspects correct for a metroidvania title. Timespinner is a worthy addition to your Xbox One library if you're a fan of the metroidvania genre. Bravo Chucklefish, the work that went into Timespinner is definitely noted.… Full Review »
