Clementine isn't playable and only gets 10% of the entire screen time. Javier is bland and has a boring story. Episodes are 60 minutes long, down from 90 minutes in season 2 and 120-150 minutes in season 1. The writing is atrocious.

If you have any respect for Clementine or Lee, don't buy this game. It destroys everything from the past 2 seasons.

This is an insult and a betrayal to all fans.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier starts very strong. In the first 2 minutes you are in a room with a "Walker".
Which is very surprising coming from telltale, which always had boring introductions so they later could make a good story.
And this season we are introduced to new characters. And I am glad to say that I were invested in the new characters just as I am with Clementine. And

A very promising start to season 3 of the walking dead. Graphic detail has improved quite a lot and the game looks beautiful, although there are quite some performance issues and glitches.
The characters seem quite interesting and believable. Maybe not as strong as in season one or the 400days characters, but good nevertheless. The first two episodes are well put together with nice pacing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Telltale games have totally shot themselves in the foot recently by taking on way too many projects and half-assing them out the door but its good to see that their bread and butter game is still being given such a great deal of attention.

The game runs better than previous installments, the game taking place from an entirely new characters POV right off the bat was a decision that worried me but has evidently worked great and as usual just where I think I've done everything right and everyone might live and be happy for at least a little while something that I forgot about momentarily comes out of left field and turns everything on its head.

The ending of the first episode messed me up so much that a week later I keep chickening out of playing episode 2 for fear of dealing with the fallout of what happened. And I mean that as a good thing.

at first I was a little sad that we weren’t playing primarily as clementine this time around... But I grew to love playing as Javier and trying to take care of his family…
As you start out with just your niece, nephew, and brother’s wife…
And as you’d expect things happen to make this 7 hour journey to the games end, not the smoothest walk through the park…
The game does carry over choices from the past walking dead games, or allows you to choose before the game starts as it does continue the clementine story...
I was just a little disappointed with how they handled my season 2 ending... and how they wrote Kenny out of my story…
it felt extremely unimpactful for being the only person I’ve had by my side as clementine from the beginning…
the departure felt rush and left me feeling no emotion…
In fact the game for the most part is dealing with moody teenagers and a complicated relationship…
Things do get emotional, and tears did shed…
I just wish some of the emotional moments were drug out a little longer or that certain moments that should’ve been emotional felt more than just a quick bump to get over and then onto the next thing…
As far as performance and gameplay goes..
These games are best when you’re making decisions…
Changing the path your characters go down and how everyone in the story reacts to you...
I felt I deserved everything that came my way, and there were definitely hard choices to make here…
But there are the typical telltale performance issues…
As the game crashed on me within the first 20 minutes of playing causing me to restart from the beginning…
But thankfully the other 4 episodes ran perfectly…
There are the occasional boring adventure type section where you have to interact with the world...
These moments are never fun and really feel like they’re there just to be there... completely unnecessary//
But the most annoying thing gameplay wise are the occasional point and aim quick time events…
You never have any indication of what you should actually be aiming at, or what you should be trying to do in that situation.. And the curser is always off in an awkward position so it never feels natural...
Which can lead to many trial and error moments… made worse by the fact that there’s sometimes a brief cut scene before these moments that you have to watch through just to try again …
And design and setting wise... you do a lot of spending your time in settlements.. Which definitely gets boring…
the variety like the first season had is missing... episodes no longer feel like unique chunks within the story…
    A New Frontier is a good experience…
    But it’s just good…
A bit boring at times, but will still punch you in the guts with some feels…
I Give The Walking Dead: A New Frontier a 7/10

This isn't Clem's story, this is Javier's story - so this shouldn't even have Clem in it if Telltale wants to tell Javier's story so badly because she's just shoe-horned in and a side character. All the false advertising pre-release doesn't help either. Her being in every bloody advertisement also doesn't help. We played as Clementine in Season 2 and shaped our Clementine, and now Clementine is a supporting character again plus her personality doesn't change at all depending on your choices last season. Easy choices and deaths don't affect you because there is not enough character development and the game just pushes you forwards without any chance to talk to characters like in Season 1 (and even S2). This review would be too long if I talked about every issue, but SOME of the main issues are up there. SOME of the main issues. S2 choices don't **** matter for ****

The third chapter in Telltale's Walking Dead series is not quite a great as the first, but was still interesting enough to keep me going until the end.

Instead of Clementine, you play as Javier-an ex-baseball star with a ton of family drama and a weird relationship with his sister-in-law. They are roaming about when the run afoul of a dangerous group of survivors. After several misunderstandings the story starts rolling pretty well, with the usual twists and surprising deaths, as well as the token Walking Dead comic book character appearance.

I do think the story would have been better following Clementine instead of Javier, though. I get what the creators were going for and Clem does play a pretty big role in the story, but Javier's family are all pretty irritating (especially Gabe). It is a bit shorter than previous entries, though, which limits the sections where the story drags that appear in most Telltale games.

The game did run fairly smoothly, with a minor video glitch in Episode 3 that made it look like Javier had strings attached to him. Controls and loading times were both serviceable, as much as previous Telltale games have been.

After finishing up the season the story telling was solid and the game mechanics were good. But after two seasons of telling Clementines story this foray into new characters created a problem. We have spent so much time caring about Clem and we needed more from her. So I struggled at times but eventually came on board. Overall It was what we expect from Telltale but nothing too earth shattering.

Even though I enjoyed this game, it's definitely the worst in the series. If you haven't played the series before I'd recommend playing the other three over this. I wasn't really on board with the introduction of new characters as I've had two games getting to know Clementine. Eventually, I got into it, though it wasn't nearly as strong as Clementine's story. Still a good game.

First off, as I did with the rest of the Telltale seasonal games I played, I will mention this - this is more of an interactive book than a game, its gameplay is limited to some QTE minigames, a couple "point-and-click" adventure scenes and some dialog scenes. This alone means it will not be interesting or enjoyable for a lot of people.

Second thing I always mention in these, is that

This alone means it will not be interesting or enjoyable for a lot of people.

Second thing I always mention in these, is that the impact of player choices is very small in regards to the overall story and the marketing and in-game information regarding the impact of choices being misleading. The story is very linear, it will take you to the same locations under the same circumstances most of the time, and the end-point is pretty specific and you will arrive to it no matter what you do. That being said, the choices you make do impact characters and their relationship with your character considerably.

Third disclaimer, which I did not use with the other games - I generally avoid writing reviews for games I did not complete (or played for significant amount of time in case of sandbox games), both here on Metacritic and on other pages and forums I visit / used to visit. That is because in most cases, I do not finish them because they simply are not to my liking, not because they would be simply so bad I refuse to complete them. However, there are a couple games which do fall into the category of "so bad I can't play more of it", and this season of TWD falls into this category, or rather, the second half of it does, and so review it I shall, although even the first half lags behind in overall quality.

Graphics are much better than previous two seasons, the characters are modeled much better, animations are smoother, more human, facial expressions are great, the world is detailed - the game remains true to its comics style of visuals, but brings them to a completely new level. There were points in the game where I wanted to just stand and admire the locations and the details in them, but I did not, which brings us to the first major issue - the optimization is terrible. The game freezes on some scene changes just like in Season 2, but the micro-stutter is now nearly constant and there are semi-common frame drops into what looks like 10-15 FPS area, which does not impact the gameplay that much, considering the gameplay loop of the game, but it can still be jarring, as some of these drops come suddenly and last 10-30 seconds.

Sound design is overall average again, nothing special, but sound engineering is quite bad. Ambient sounds and background music have a tendency to stutter, sound-tear and loop short sections during scene changes (when the game freezes), but it also happens when scenes are on-going and in times when there aren't framedrops, so it is not necessarily tied to that.

Voice acting is still top notch, though, so there's that, at least.

Story and characters - this is where the largest drop of quality is. The character you get to play is not one from the initial group you start out with in Season 1 and in Season 2, and it immediately feels like all of the progress and choices you made have had 0 consequences so far, which is really bad. They did call it A New Frontier and implied it is a different story (hence not Season 3), but it's a full fledged game, unlike the Michonne spin-off or the 400-days DLC for first season, and the story of the first group - or what is left of it, is not really resolved in the first and second season. ANF does this, in a very lackluster, off hand way - subverting expectations like The Last Jedi, before it was cool to be The Last Jedi - and it does contain a member of the initial group as a side character (playable in some short sections with memory flashbacks) - and the fact that this character which you are emotionally invested in and essentially helped to build into what they are now kills off almost all interest in playing the character you are given.

The story also returns the pacing and character interaction issues (out of character behavior) from season 1 and combines them with underdeveloped relationships of season 2. The side-characters are also less compelling. The story also, in the second half, switches focus from survival and relationships and behavior of humans in life-or-death situations into a very shallow and badly written political intrigue story, which is more like a bad re-enactment of kindergarten spat than a story of political conflict between politically powerful adults. The antagonists also change from a mix of regular people and broken people into literal 60s Spiderman cartoon villains in 4th episode, at which point I just quit and just lost all interest finishing this mess and in playing the last season.

Conclusion: Still technically disappointing and broken in both optimization and sound design and engineering, same misleading marketing regarding impact of choices on the story, this time with terrible plot and cartoonish antagonist.

It’s a solid third season for The Walking Dead, but we’ve seen so much better. Cheap plot devices and inconsistent tones in the writing hurt the overall quality of the narrative, and the Telltale Tool continues to show its age in the worst ways. And, for diehard fans, Clementine will still find a way to steal the show from the new cast.

Despite its promising subtitle, there's little new in The Walking Dead: A New Frontier to write home about. A revamped presentation, new characters, and excellent voice acting make it live up to the expectations, but the traditional flaws on the technical side of things and an undeniable stagnation on the narrative one stop it from reaching the greatness of the first season.
