Technically the game holds up really well and the mechanics have been implemented excellently which means the game is both fun and challenging. The physics when it comes to your swing and the golf ball have a very realistic feel to them and this does make things even more immersive. The sound design is pretty good on the whole the commentators isn’t as good and they can get on your nerves from time to time. The course creator is absolutely brilliant when you finally get the hang of it but it is a little complicated at first and the tutorial isn’t very good. Does The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA Tour do enough to get a recommendation from me? Golf game’s haven’t really been prominent over recent year’s and in a way they definitely aren’t as popular as they once were. That being said golf game’s still have quite a big following and without a doubt The Golf Club 2019 will satisfy quite a lot. This satisfied feeling will last you for quite a while as well because in terms of content the game has a huge amount for you to get to grips with and the inclusion of the PGA Tour licence gives the game even more content and courses. Thankfully the massive content in the game doesn’t suffer with many problems as well and you’ll definitely be pleased with how the game holds up when it comes to the technical side of things. On the whole then this game delivers in a number of key areas and as far as golf game’s go it’s probably the best addition we’ve seen in quite a while and without a doubt it gets a thumbs up from me.

TGC 3 is an odd game to score. On the one hand it is still the tough, simulation type of golf game that is non-existent these days. They've added plenty of real life PGA tour golf courses, they've deepened the career mode and character customization but it is a case of a step forward and a step back and just as the game itself can be, it is really frustrating.

TGC 3 makes no effort to hold your hand. There is a brief tutorial but there is a lot they don't tell you. There are no power gauges, no three clicks to set power, contact and spin, no ideal putting line previews. It is bare bones and expects you to know its inner workings in order to be good. So they don't tell you, therefore, that adjusting loft on your shots is absolutely essential and I mean on every shot. They don't tell you that you really don't need that much power to sink a 10ft putt. They leave you to learn this by extensive and frustrating trial and error. I hate the comparison because it is so often used whenever a game is harder than usual but this really is the "Dark Souls of Golf".

My primary issue with TGC 3 isn't that it is hard. That is firmly in the list of its "pros". My main issue with it is that things go against you often enough for me to fail to believe it isn't artificially done by the CPU to make things harder. Anybody who has played golf in real life will sympathize with the ideal that there is always an aspect of luck involved in every round. Sometimes you'll get the bounce you need to save a bad shot. Sometimes you'll do everything right and the ball just doesn't bounce right and it all goes wrong. Allow me to tell you now, the ball will NEVER bounce right for you in TGC 3. You hit a tee-shot that just needs that little bit of a kind bounce to miss the fringe? That ball is bouncing into the rough everytime. You're chipping onto the green and need a little bit of carry to get closer? The ball will bite and stop. You've chipped it long and you need it to bite? The ball will roll another 10 ft. It happens CONSTANTLY.

The wind is another example of this. On the same round you might adjust for a 8mph side wind on one shot and it does as expected, you aim into the wind and the wind carries the ball to where you need it to be. Except the next time you'll make that same adjustment and the wind does nothing at all and the ball flies off course. So the next time you learn from your mistake and don't adjust your aim and this time a gust of wind knocks the ball 5 yards off course. It will also always happen when you least need it to.

There is something of realism in this. Sometimes in golf things...just go wrong and there isn't anything you can really do. But things go wrong in TGC all the time. At least 10 times or more a round and it gets to a point where you fail to believe it isn't being done on purpose by the CPU.

Putting has had this effect added to it as well. The amount of times I have read a green that apparently has no left to right action at all, I've hit a smooth, well judged putt that 5ft away from the hole inexplicable bends away from the hole. It will either roll to within 6 inches of the hole or suddenly magically add pace after it narrowly misses and go 10ft beyond the hole.

The commentary is awful this year. They've neutered the pool of comments down so low that you'll have heard everything within 5 rounds and he is incredibly pessimistic. If you hit it close the most you'll get is a "good job" but he loves to point out anything else you do wrong his particular favorite being "too much club on that one" because you thought a 10mph headwind would make it bite but alas it didn't do a thing. The same goes for the crowd. If you do anything good you get a smattering of apathetic applause but if your ball rolls an inch into the fringe you get gasps and groans as though you just hit a water hazard. I muted both within 5 hours of playing.

Also with all the attempts at realism it really seems an odd choice to have you playing for "coins" as opposed to real money. It's jarring and weird to see the purse for a tournament be "81 coins* why they didn't make it $ I have absolutely no idea.

So with all of these complaints why is it a 7? It is still incredibly satisfying when you post a good round, when you hit one close, putt from distance, win a tournament. It does a very good job of portraying the whole "agony and ecstasy" factor of the game. Perhaps not always in an entirely fair way but it does it all the same. For golf purists the challenge will hook you in and keep you playing hole after hole. When you finally do well it feels as though you've outwitted the game and when it stacks the deck so obviously in its favor it feels pretty great to beat it. Plus they added what they needed to the previous iterations. It has real courses, a career mode and has kept the same gameplay so it is hard to rate it less than the earlier titles.

It has flaws but its the best golf sim by default for good or ill.

This game is awesome as far as golf sims are concerned. The visuals are incredible and making quality shots requires an understanding of wind direction, speed, loft, and course lay. I am not sure why people don't like this game - obviously it's not Mario Golf but if you like the game of golf and understand it, making good rounds feels really satisfying.

The commentator, he is nothing short of boring, there is no emotion in his voice he is dull and repetitive. Barely any excitement from him or the player even when you land a good shot. 3. Some graphical effect that puts an arc like a few meters in front of the camera that is almost always there and always noticeable and annoying. AND 4. Last but not least the money, win a tournament and get $80 Why.

If you are going to base a game on reality, have real commentators, real colored clothes on the crowd, real visuals (no arc) and real prize money. Let me build up money to travel to the next tourn, hire a better caddy, better equipment, fly business class. Make it real.

In the prior games I felt like it was very difficult to gauge shots, (especially putting) but this one feels perfect and fair. My only gripe with the game is the commentary which is fine but it would be nice to have the guys from PGA broadcasts calling the shots. This feels like a natural evolution of the Tiger Woods series and that was exactly what I have been waiting for. Expand

No cloud shadows, falling leaves, or weather, either. The "official" courses are a huge step backwards, and make me long for the ones in GC2. Does it play better? yes, but not significantly. Using the higher level clubs is mostly a disaster, at least for me. I hold my breath to see which way the ball is going to go. Character creation is still awful, I can't even come close to making a character that looks anything like me. (but then maybe that's a good thing;) The same lame announcer, really? (I'm guessing that John is a super nice guy in real life, but....) If I hear "That was going to be excellent!" one more time I'll slit my wrists. (I know you can shut it off, but I really would like to hear the game being announced, as it feels pretty barren otherwise) Is the game fun to play? That's a mixed bag. There are times when I think "Hey, this is pretty fun," followed by periods where well, for what ever reason, it just isn't. Maybe patches will help, (again, definately needs some optimization as my 1070 still struggles at times) but right now there's just no way it's a 50 dollar game. I will say in all fairness that I'm not going to refund the game. I want to support the developers, and there are parts of the game that I enjoy. Just not enough parts to reccomend it. Expand

There are so many glitches and faults! Very frustrating and I don’t recommend that you bother until they iron these out (pardon the pun). For example. If you land close but not on the green, and you adjust your club it sends the ball dozens of meters further. Basically there is no consistency at all. Play something else for now.

I have played many golf games and this one is by far the worst. Every hit is a slice, the wind direction or my swing path doesn't change anything. A near prefect center and it slices. A little but wouldn't be so bad but its always a lot. There was a 6 mph wind in the opposite direction and it sliced so hard it went out of bounds with a great centered hit. They were the only ones I'd enjoyed playing since i think it was TW11. While feedback from heavy users should allow you to tweak a game in all areas, it's only a good thing if the said user base doesn't actually want the game to be niche and suit only their limited needs. I want to be clear I had no intention of buying this game after the experience of TGC2, once it became clear it had some huge flaws that many users actually wanted to be part of the core of the gameplay. I didn't buy the game, but have played it for enough time since they gave it away free on xbox live a few months back. I only just bothered to play it though. I can only assume it hasn't been well received, that it's free. Especially not good considering they've marketed it with a clear design to making this a yearly release at £50 a pop (LMAO). With that said I'll review the game now.

In terms of graphics, the game looks OK. But it's really not all that. The shot animation, with huge divots on every shot, is super weird. There's lot of blurriness which I think is from efforts to calm the obvious frame dropping and the resulting variable frame rate problem, which scuppered the new tempo swing they introduced in TGC2 and have kept for this edition. The trees are also a big issue. They're still the same as from the previous version and they look really dated. When the camera's panning during replays they just don't look good at all.

Gameplay and controls wise, it just seems lacking. I know from their devs comments in their forums from the last game, they consider the game to be simulation. But they've also tried to keep things in that make the game playable for a casual gamer who just wants to play a bit of golf. I/they/everyone knows why they've taken that approach. The game can't bring great financial success if it's too niche. But while I get that, I just feel the devs are wanting to have their cake and eat it. This for me is the real crux of this games failure. As a sim it falls so far short for anyone who's an actual golfer. As an arcadey pick up and play golf game, it's got almost nothing to offer. Add to that the fact that the game is incredibly boring to play and it's really impossible for any of the good elements to make up for the massive flaws in the game.

One of the things I like most about all versions of the game (this included) is the excellent feel to the putting. It's hard at first as you only have one putter to use. By that I mean there isn't a 5ft putter, a 10ft putter, a 20ft putter etc. etc. I know a lot of new users in the past found it hard to get used to, but once you've played a while it feels very rewarding and gives as simulationy a feel as you could get. Sadly, the rest of the shots are nothing like this. There's no option to adjust you golfer's stance in terms of lining up to the front or back foot. No option to close the face of the club or open it right up. This type of feel can only partially be replicated by moving around an x/y axis graph that in no way relates to the image of your golfer on the screen. It makes no difference to the divots taken (as previously mentioned) and doesn't offer a lot of visual feedback. This would be important as the x'y thing has no indication of the level of effect it will have on the shot. They've clearly done this to stop people just dialling in every shot and use it to break the already ill thought out approach to the game. I personally think it shows up the devs' and the heavy user base's lack of knowledge of real golf and how a real golfer achieves a normal shot and variation from a normal shot. Hitting draw or fade by design should also be done by stick control rather than on a graph in my opinion. This was already done on older TW games but not here. This also then leads into the fact the game has different types of shot to select from a list. Normal, punch, pitch, chip, etc. This has been a staple of all golf games. But to me seems an odd choice for a developer who's modified putting so well and yet failed to do so in any other part of the game. Add to that the fact they've been implemented so badly. Pitches don't look, feel, or play like pitches. Flop shots don't look, feel, or play like flop shots. This is what makes the game feel most boring. Every shot until you get to the green feels so samey. Driving is way too easy and there's little differentiation between how you approach each of the shots and any potential issues a real life golfer would face trying to play them.

I could say a lot more. The game's course designer is still excellent however. But all in all this game just shows a lack of understanding or respect by the developers and it's why the game fails. I also doubt they can turn back now

Even with small small gripes, I found the overall package of The Golf Club 2019 to be a huge step in the right direction. I dug far deeper into this year’s outing than any other in this series. HB Studios has really tightened up the core mechanics, and now with the PGA license and an amazing suite of customizable tools, the series has nothing but upside. If you’re like me and have been craving to hit the digital links again, I highly recommend giving The Golf Club 2019 a look.
