Ultimately, The Explorer of Night on Xbox One is a fundamentally solid adventure with its fair share of issues that prevent it from standing out. But as mentioned, there is plenty to admire in minimalism.

Bringing nothing new to the table, suffering with some frustrating sections and with an art style that’s nice to look but can make the game hard to read, The Explorer of Night is a retro inspired platformer that’ll scratch that twitchy platformer itch for a day or so – but no longer.

The Explorer of Night is an 8bit 2D Side-Scrolling Platformer. you play as a cat-person, and the only one who can save the day. This gameThe Explorer of Night is an 8bit 2D Side-Scrolling Platformer. you play as a cat-person, and the only one who can save the day. This game takes a minimalist approach, and gives solid gameplay, but doesn't bring anything new to the table. The colors depict the dark feeling but the art makes the scenery hard to read sometimes. In the first stage I was avoiding the grass as it looks like spikes. You cannot bounce off of some enemies, and some you can. The only way to know what's safe and what isn't is through trial and error. There isn't too much of a concern about death as all it does is restart your current level. Most of the levels are short enough, and straight forward enough that is is mostly an inconvenience. There isn't a ton of precision skill jumps, and most everything can be defeated with patience, though some areas do force you to tackle areas quickly so you can catch your ride at the end. For skilled platformers this game doesn't deliver anything, but would provide many challenges to those new to the genre. Overall The Explorer of Night delivers exactly what it intended to, a decently paced, minimalist platformer with a cute aesthetic. This title is a great place to start young players! Expand
