A research spaceship reaches an abandoned planet. Nothing is what it seems here and the situation quickly slips out of control. Can the crew manage to survive and get back home?

Symmetry is a survival management game set in a retro-futuristic, sci-fi universe. Your main goal is to manage the crash survivors and help them withstand the desolate, extremely cold environment in-order to fix their spacecraft and escape. The non-obvious plot is accompanied by an atmospheric musical score and graphic design that sustains the harsh and mysterious ambience.

Survivors' life functions crucial to their existence, such as eating, resting and mental health need to be taken care of. Extreme circumstances may force crew members to develop new skills like botanics or power plant operations, that weren't necessary in their Earthly life. Gathering all the parts required to repair the spaceship becomes a race against time, as extreme weather conditions and life-threatening supernatural activities become more and more present.

Vector graphics give the game a feeling of mystery and severity of the deserted world. Using dimmed and pastel colours throughout the scenery creates a sense of remoteness from reality and builds an unreal atmosphere of the landscape.

If you are a fan of survival sims or enjoy experiences like Don’t Starve or This War of Mine then this should be a must buy for your collection. For the rest of us, there are some lovely visuals, a sparse but interesting narrative, and a great soundtrack, but it might be too hardcore for the casual gamer.

Symmetry isn't much fun after a few hours and I honestly feel this is a game that those who play will lose interest in due to the flaws of the gameplay, the lack of sound and lack of character development. But on a more positive note, there are worse games out there, that is for sure.

When the Xbox version of SYMMETRY is updated to add a lower difficulty level it has the potential to be a great introduction to the management genre and satisfying for casual and experienced players alike. However, at time of writing, the steep learning curve, high difficulty level, and occasional game-breaking bugs make it more fitting for hardcore fans of the genre and people whose love of challenges is matched by their patience.

Symmetry is a time management survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world. The excessive difficulty and the little reward to the player makes the playing experience less enjoyable.

Unfortunately, Symmetry doesn’t make itself clear fast enough to keep someone playing in the long term. The collection of resources becomes grindy as you try to last long enough for the game to tell you the next story point, with no indication of how or when that next story point will occur, or what you need to do differently (if anything). There’s a lot of potential here, and I’m trying to see it, but I guess this face-hugger is in the way.

Well this game is the one you were looking for! Set in a retro-futuristic universe, its objective is to administer the resources we have and we get to survive, repair our spacecraft and escape from that remote and inhospitable planet.
It is a difficult game, it is not the typical game of survival in which the characters survive easily, on the contrary, it is necessary to be constant so that nobody dies. Will you be able to fix the spacecraft and escape from there?

Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate them it’s just after a little while they do start to become boring, at least for me anyway. Symmetry is the latest addition to the genre and whilst it still has those boring moments I ended up enjoying it more than I disliked it. The story in the game is simple yet very effective and I liked the way they told it to you. In a way it had a unique way of being presented to you and without a doubt that was a big reason why I carried on with the game. There are a number of different mechanics in play at the same time and most of them work together really well, which in turn makes the gameplay enjoyable at times. The main reason why the gameplay is only enjoyable at times is because the game is very difficult and in my opinion the difficulty curve will put quite a few people off. Another problem with the game is that it doesn’t have as many options as other game’s in the genre and this means the replayabiliy isn’t as high as it should be and things start to become tedious a lot more rapidly. I will say though that in a way I like that they haven’t made things too complex because other game’s in the genre can be awash with little details here and there and you can miss them at times, but thankfully that’s not the case here. In terms of content the game doesn’t have a huge amount but it has just enough to keep you occupied. The only problem is that the content can get repetetive quite quickly and without a doubt this game is best played in short bursts. The presentation side of the game is something that I enjoyed quite a lot. Visually the game stirs up quite a few emotions and the accompanying sound design adds to this creating an immersive experience at times. At the end of the day fans of survival games will no doubt find something here that tickles their fancy. Symmetry is not the best survival game nor is it the worst and it does provide you with some unique gameplay, but the few shortcomings it has stops it from reaching its full potential. That being said Symmetry does enough to warrant a recommendation from me because it has more good going for it than bad. Expand
