Super Dodgeball Beats has enjoyable visuals and music, distractions aside. If not for the majority of Super Dodgeball Beats‘ gameplay woes arising from its visual obstructions, I’d be totally comfortable giving it a higher review score. The art style and animation convey a lot of personality. Its comic scenes are bare-bones, existing in black and white rather than being colored in for what I imagine are stylistic reasons, but the level of visual polish is otherwise on par with the most artistically-minded indie studios. The music in Super Dodgeball Beats is also really good. I didn’t think that was the case at first, with the title music possessing a certain tinny quality that I found unpleasant (which I’m confident has something to do with a down-sampler on one of the instruments), but the high-energy dance music is paired with specific opponents in interesting ways. For example, a Tengu is paired with music that, while still electronic, is recognizably Japanese-inspired. The vampire opponent, meanwhile, features howling and a synth lead with theremin-inspired vibrato. Overall this is entertaining game for the price of admission on Xbox One. Expand

Fun, energetic and original, Super Dodgeball Beats on Xbox One delivers exactly what it says on the tin; and it does so well. You may blast through it in a few short hours, but at just £11.99 it’s well worth it.

Overall, Super Dodgeball Beats is a rather fun and unique game that will bring out the friendly competitive nature in everyone, despite some criticisms regarding calibration and the diminishing entertainment value once the championship has been completed. This game creatively brings together all the essential elements in this genre to form a relatively distinctive and memorable gaming experience.

It might not be the best rhythm game out there, but there’s no arguing that Super Dodgeball beats is pretty fun. Its frustrating power-up system and troublesome timing lets it down somewhat, but it’s still worth playing thanks to its brilliant soundtrack, wonderful character design and delightful visuals.
