With its great presentation and pounding soundtrack, Super Destronaut DX is one hell of a retro inspired title.

If you're looking for a short burst of fun and Space Invaders holds a special place in your heart, then Super Destronaut DX is perfectly playable. There's a handful of modes on offer to keep things entertaining for a while, but it relies too much on the nostalgia factor and ultimately offers little else. With nothing to keep you coming back after you've earned all the achievements, the game will sadly only be played for an hour or so before it is put back on the shelf and forgotten about.

It’s a game that achievement hunters should purchase without a single thought, but if you are looking for some decent modern day space invading that will keep you going for some time, then Super Destronaut DX will leave you wanting.

It’s addictive nature and easy to pick up and play style is what I remember fondly about Space Invaders and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I don’t go a week without playing one of the game’s in the series. As you can imagine then when I first saw Super Destronaut DX I was a little excited and as far as the Space Invaders formula goes it’s not a bad clone, but it definitely could’ve been better. The gameplay on the whole in this game has been done really well and it’s easy to pick up and play style means everybody can play this game. I will recommend though that you play this game in short bursts because it becomes repetetive and tedious quite quickly when played for long periods. For the price of the game you get a decent amount of content and there are a various amount of modes for you to get to grips with. Whilst I appreciated the amount of modes there were I can’t help thinking that they needed more variety because each mode basically plays out the same way. I would’ve also have liked to have seen more variety placed into the enemies you have to face in the game as well because you can work them out in a few minutes and more variety would’ve have given the game a little more in terms of replayability in my opinion. Technically the game holds up really well throughout your time with the game and most important of all the controls remain tight and responsive at all times, which is obviously very important in a game like this. Whilst I did find quite a bit of enjoyment with Super Destronaut DX the biggest problem for me with this game was its lack of a challenge. The Space Invaders game’s all had some very challenging moments which did give the game’s some longevity, but Super Destronaut DX doesn’t follow that formula and in the end the game is very easy to complete in a very short amount of time. Thankfully though it does get some things right and that’s especially the case when it comes to the game’s presentation. I really enjoyed the simple yet effective presentation they went with and I think both the visuals and sound design add something to the gameplay, which is great. At the end of the day if like me you’re a big fan of Space Invaders then you will find something that tickles your fancy within Super Destronaut DX. I will warn you though that it’s a very shallow experience and it won’t hold your attention for long but for the price you pay it does just enough to get a small recommendation from me. Full Review »

Its biggest problem however is it's one of the easiest completions on the Xbox One, it took me around 25 minutes to get all the achievements in the game, so most likely people will play this for only being a quick completion and then never play it again. Nevertheless if you like your retro shooters you will probably find some level of enjoyment with this game, but its shortness in gameplay and achievements will probably mean you won't be spending too much time with it, which is a shame really.
