They usually either play way too easy to way to hard to understand and as a result I usually get annoyed or bored by the end of them. But finally I’ve found a puzzle game that actually has probably one of the best learning curves I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing.
Super Box Land Demake doesn’t really seem to have a story that I could find. I imagine that because that this is developed by one individual from what I see in the credits that I’d like to think this was a game he originally developed for a friend or someone more than that so they had a fun puzzle game to play together. That’s what this sorta feels like at its core given that it’s only local couch co-op but it’s also been made for the single loners like myself and of course the achievement hunters as this is a game published by Ratalaika games.
But I digress, the gameplay is quite easy to pick up as all you have to do is push boxes on buttons. How easy that is for you depends on the difficulty you choose as well as how good your foresight is for puzzles. At its easiest, you can make as many errors as you wish thanks to the game’s magic cam feature that lets you basically rewind the game like a VHS tape. Normal mode allows for errors with single pickups for one move and hard is if you have the been born as so much a perfectionist that you have never made a mistake in your entire life and don’t plan on starting now. So of course I played on easy because I’m a massive klutz that doesn’t know how I even live, plus I didn’t want to think too hard and this game was quite relaxing and was the reason I felt the need to buy it as well as the fact I love supporting the indie devs that Ratalaika games gets out there because they make some solid content. The game difficulty like I’ve said before progresses at a very well fitting curve and never feels truly impossible, intimidating, but never impossible, with some of the puzzles actually being more easier the intimidating they become, at least for the first two worlds that I’ve played. The later levels felt like I had to get a bit more crafty and take advantage of the fact that I can use a second character to strategically push boxes onto buttons with ease which makes me believe that this was without a doubt intended to be co-op first. But that doesn’t bother me at all, it actually allows for an extra bit of challenge on the later levels which I think makes it more fun.
As for achievements, you can easily get all 1000G within the first two hours with little to no difficulty you have even a minor knack in puzzle solving. Better yet, just have you and a friend or significant other to just knock out the first two worlds easy. Easy 1000G and possible brownie points (if applicable) in just two hours.
Pros: relaxing,
Quick gamerscore,
potential for brownie points
Cons: nothing that I can honestly criticize,
I can't even think of a BS con
Overall: I liked this title, it was something to stimulate the brain a little bit after a long day of work when I didn’t want to do anything to heavy focused. Plus I always appreciate a game with a retro feel, gameplay and music wise.
I give it an 9/10. I was initially feeling 8 but at second thought, there’s nothing I can really find wrong with as sad that sounds. I enjoyed it as a game to decompress to before I went to sleep. I’d definitely say pick this up not just for the achievements but because I think you’ll honestly like it. It’s currently on sale for Xbox at $4.50 so get it while it’s on sale!… Expand
