Simply put, one of the most bonkers and fun games I have ever played! The art style is fantastic, the guns are just nuts and the city is a joy to traverse. A great new IP.

You'll have a great time with this game. You know when a game gets this much praise from credible review sites and then you see a bunch of 0's, that means Sony fanboys are really upset they don't have the game. Take the credible reviewer's words and the fanboy's 0's as a sign that this game is awesome.

yep the story is cheeze, but the game never try to be serious, its really fun for me, its kind of a combination of old tony hawk skater games with a shooter. Game plays really well so you can pull off some fancy moves without much trouble and I just love the art-style. If you're looking for having some fun its a great game.

So far I have played Sunset Overdrive a couple of hours, and let me a good taste of mouth. I do not think this game will be a reason to buy an Xbox One, but for the actual owners of such console I think it a great option to have lot of fun, almost a must have game.

I would try to update my review with more time invested in the game so stay tunned... jajajaja

    This game is just awesome.

Fast-paced with beautifully crafted mechanics and movements. Insomniac Games made a hell of a work into this game and I really recommend it to you. Every mission you have new fun objectives, the game never gets repetitive and its very well-crafted. Probably this is the first game ever I can say 'this is one of my favorites game ever' in less than one day.

I have never before experience an open world game - that's so rewarding during the campaign - die so hard. I guess you shouldn't complain considering that you get all that fun for so many hours, but a game like this, with all possibilities with an open world to do so much more, it's very very sad that there's pretty much no incentive to continue playing. You could kill more monsters to get all the guns and all the gear, etc, but for what? So you could continue killing more monsters for no reason? Meh. Sunset Overdrive is a furiously fast take on the open world third-person shooter that delivers high-quality gameplay and good times through all of its excessively loud silliness

    WHAT THE GAME DOES WELL
You are meant to traverse around the city as fast as possible by using your super human ability to turn an entire Metropolitan city into your own personal skateboarding park. Enemies move at you very quickly, so you have to use your physical talents to zip-line, grind-rail and bounce to both escape and attack enemies. The action is almost like a rail shooter, except you still maintain control of your character at all times.

It took me a couple of hours to get the feel for how to really control your character. There’s definitely a learning curve, but once you get the hang of how to move using the environment, you become capable of doing a lot of really cool stuff that’s not that difficult to execute.
Sunset Overdrive does a fantastic job saving your progress. I wish more games would adopt their generous re-spawn points, because I don’t like having to replay a part I already did over and over again. The game also now claims the title of most humorous re-spawn animations, as they cleverly spoof other video games and movies so well it almost makes you look forward to dying.

Most of the humor in the game comes from breaking down the fourth wall and simultaneously pointing out the foibles and absurdity of Sunset Overdrive and all videogames in general. This is not the first game to do that type of humor, but they are one of the better ones at it, as most of the time the jokes land. This is easily one of the funniest games of the year.

WHAT THE GAME DOES EVEN BETTER
I started trying to create a character that looked like me, but it ended up looking like Bruce Vilanch and Zack Galifianakis did the nasty and created a baby.

You can change your character’s appearance at any time, but when it looks like the love child of Bruce Vilanch and Zack Galifanakis, why mess with perfection?

WHAT THE GAME COULD HAVE IMPROVED
It did take a little longer than normal before I really got into the swing of the game and some people will be turned off because of that. The game feels like it controls a little stiff and difficult out of the gate, but as you become more and more familiar with the game mechanics, you soon realize that it always handled amazingly and you just had to work on technique.

The campaign and side quests don’t take that much time as I completed them in under 20 hours and there’s nothing that really makes me want to go back and play any of the missions over. The game does have replay value, but it comes from going after the collectibles hidden throughout the open world. Because of how much fun it is to move through the city like a superhero, collecting scraps of toilet paper and stinky shoes becomes more fun than tedious.

There is multiplayer, but it didn't do a whole lot to make me want to play it for very long. All you do is complete missions while working together with 8 players while also simultaneously competing against them for points. The first time I played it I finished 2nd and thought it was kind of cool. The second time around I finished 5th and then promptly lost interest.
    OVERALL
The best Xbox One exclusive game yet. Sunset Overdrive is a game that above all knows how to have fun at all times and just like the poisoned energy drink in the game that turned everyone into mutants, it's contagious.

The gameplay reminds me of Jet Set Radio series immediately and the game system for Dead Rising, combining other games and even making fun of them, it's a game you should not miss.

I can see how the game wouldn't be for some people but no serious review can give any well made AAA game a 0. It's pretty obvious some people haven't actually played this game when they make posts about it being for 5 year olds and children despite the language and themes present that aren't suitableIgnore the 0 reviews, they are quite clearly ps fanboys trying to bring the score down. It's pretty obvious some people haven't actually played this game when they make posts about it being for 5 year olds and children despite the language and themes present that aren't suitable for kids.

Anyway I'd have to say this is the best game of the xbox one/ps4 generation so far for me. I went in expecting the jokes to be forced and cheesy but I was surprised that there was actually some well written humour in there and I didn't find it annoying at all (again unexpected).

The game isn't any more repetetive than any other sandbox game such as GTA, Infamous, Dead rising etc. The "boss" encounters in this game are fun and varied (more so than any of the above mentioned games) and the presentations and animations are top notch with their comic book style intros and cut scenes. The art direction in general is pretty cool.

The controls didn't take me as long to get a handle on as some claimed, if you have played tony hawks in the past you'll pick them up pretty easily but it does take a little bit of time to get your hands around pulling off some of the moves quickly while aiming.

The main story is a little on the short side for this genre (good length for fps but not for a sandbox - roughly 12-15 hours for the main story with minimal side quests) but there is a bunch of side quests and activities so if you are doing those while playing the main story (and really who plays a sandbox to pump through the main story?) it's a decent length.

Performance wise I've had zero issues, no pop ins, no screen tear, no lag. Those zero reviews really haven't played this game.

Anyway if you own an xbox one you should give this game a go, it's a lot of fun and a breath of fresh air with it's self aware humour. Too many games these days are taking the dark approach and this looks and feels different.

Insomniac's hard work really shows in this game. Their is so much you can do other than the story focused missions. You unlock more things by going through the story but their is plenty to do. Help survivors and earn rewards, take on various challenges and earn rewards, upgrade your weapons, collect items scattered throughout the city to earn powerful abilities, and more. The customization is wonderful and the weapons are awesome.

Sunset Overdrive can simply be described in one word. FUN. If you like video games, like having fun, this game is for you. The game does have it's cheesy moments, but they are hilariously cheesy because this game does not take itself seriously. It's truly in it's own class and is somewhat of a nod to classic video games of the past with it's fun factor.

The traversal is tough at first, but easily mastered after a few hours, very fluid and never breaks the games fast parkour style mobility (no frame-rate drops, very smooth). The graphics and artwork are truly stunning. Imagine a Pixar movie, very colorful, very anti-grey like most games we have seen on next gen.

The sound is excellent. The music in the game fits the atmosphere perfectly. I tried to imagine a different soundtrack and just couldn't. The entire theme of the game just goes hand and hand with the audio.

The gameplay is extremely fun and takes open world gaming to the next level. I have seen many make comparisons to Jet Set Radio and other classic titles, but it does not compare to that of Sunset Overdrive.

I really don't know what else to say other than this game puts a huge smile on my face. It's been a while since that's happened. #GameOn

Please play this with the profanity filter on it's even more hilarious , don't ask me why, see ya in Sunset Overdrive.

    This game is a hoot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Personally, I wasn't too hyped about sunset overdrive. Nevertheless, on day one, I picked the game up. I really enjoyed the games campaign which I completed in roughly 11 hours (Yes, I was a noob). After the campaign I thought there wouldn't be a lot to do, but I can tell you, I was wrong. I really enjoyed doing all the quests after and each was different and diverse. I done a quest about collecting comics, where the person you was doing the quest for, was making a comic up about you. I thought that was really cool. I also enjoyed the humour of the game and found myself laughing quite frequently. The game also has so much content with all the weird and wacky weapons, overdrives (which are essentially perks), amps (perks, different than overdrives) and also things such as collecting essentials to make amps. Toilet paper, fizzie balloons, shoes just to name a few. The exciting thing is Insomniac are going to be adding more DLC so you're never going to get bored (who gets bored of killing zombies, anyway?!) My only negative of the game would be some of the missions in the campaign seem to drag on. Especially when trying to find the propeller, to what you think, you're going to escape the city. All in all Sunset Overdrive is an amazing game, heaps of fun and I would recommend to most, If not all, Xbox one owners. Expand

The story of the game loses itself in parody, but it feels as though the developers didn't actually want the game to be judged on story. It makes fun of itself constantly and makes comments on tropes in many open world games. The humor in the game is a big part of the experience but it was quite hit or miss with me. Sometimes it gets me laughing (Such as the various respawn animations) and other times it makes me cringe a bit (Like the reliance on tired memes for some of the humor). The game makes direct references to the likes of Reddit, NeoGAF, and Facebook, which doesn't sit well with me but could be funny for others. The best portion of the game is in the gameplay though. Missions aren't too varied, but the method of combat and travel is in my opinion one of the most interesting in any open world game I've played. The game punishes you for staying on the ground, and gives you ample opprotunities to swing, run, and grind around buildings and in the air while fighting. There's a certain joy that comes out of pulling off combinations of stylish moves without stopping as you blast through the OD hordes. Overall I think Sunset Overdrive is a fun and self-aware new IP that deserves attention compared to the usual yearly releases, and Microsoft would do well to continue to reach out in this way. Expand

Bright and colorful, "Sunset Overdrive" brings a very different type of apocalyptic open-world game to the Xbox One. Unique flourishes and a very playful sense of humor keep things enjoyable in the face of some gameplay deficiencies. The most notable being repetition.

If you want personality this game has it in spades. The punk rock style, sharp writing, and sarcastic humor do a lot to boost the fun you'll have with it. The vibrant, colorful graphics give gamers a wildly different open-world apocalypse to explore.

As far as the gameplay goes it's all very solid. Movement is key to survival and the emphasis on rail-grinding and bouncing around make the game part platformer. Chaining together grinds and bounces all while not touching the ground builds up your style meter. Doing so gives you some boosts to help you out in combat. While a touch slow, these traversal mechanics are one of the best parts of the game.

Combat feels a little more traditional. The effect the platforming elements have on it do make it more uniquely tinged, but not even that and some crazy weapons can make up for the rather standard combat scenarios. Boss battles are the only ones with real flash and the whole thing is really easy. So easy that I never really spent any time modifying my character's "Amp" load out, which are powers designed to give you boosts in certain areas. I just picked the ones that I was originally given and found that those worked well enough.

After a while it just starts to feel like going through the motions even as new enemies are added to the fray. That's not to say there isn't any life here though. The basic combat encounters are still fun and the game packs several exciting scenarios throughout.

Where the game really stumbles is in it's repetition. It's not hard t notice that you are doing the same things over and over again. The game puts new twists on things here and there, but rarely actively changes things. It kept me from really diving into the side-content much. A shame given that Sunset Overdrive has a lot of content to keep you busy for a while.

While it's not an amazing, must play game, it is still a good one. Sunset Overdrive is still worth checking out for it's sense of humor, style, and colorful graphics if it peaked your curiosity. Elements like it's platforming and combat might fall a bit short in some areas, but there is plenty of craziness and hilarity going on to keep you engaged at least until the credits roll. If it really manages to sink it's teeth into you, there's plenty of side-content to keep you coming back.

It may seem like such a dumb thing, but it's been a long time since I've truly been able to enjoy going from point A to point B so much in a game. People get wrapped up in finishing objective after objective in games, but with Sunset Overdrive you just get lost in the movement. Sure, it's possible to fast travel to a spot much closer to the objective to save time, but more often than not I found myself taking my time, grinding and jumping to my objective, stopping to kill the occasional group of baddies here and there, and generally making sure to stop and smell the roses. It is very easy to get lost in this game (in a good way).

All that being said, the music is great (not what I would listen to normally, but fits the game very well), the graphical style is excellent, the weapons are hilarious and enjoyable, and there is PLENTY of content available to those looking. Sure, the humor can be childish at times, but maybe that's my cup of tea. I personally found myself laughing at nearly all of the dialog throughout the entire game.

Note that I'm giving this game a 10 without ever touching the multiplayer. Even if the multiplayer is absolutely awful, it won't tarnish my view of the single player campaign and how much I enjoyed it.

Sunset Overdrive is the latest game from successful game creators Insomniac Games, the minds that brought you Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and more. As a fan of all of their previous work, I think Sunset Overdrive is their best game to date. Being their first open world sandbox game, it was a gamble for a studio that had never done it, but they applied of their expertise and knowledge of being veteran game developers and created Sunset Overdrive, a polished, colorful, wacky, enjoyable game that's like other games but with its own identity. I keep seeing comparisons to Infamous and I find them unfair. It seems like fanboys want to try to discredit the quality of Sunset Overdrive as a "clone" or something along those lines, and it's too bad that people act this way. I, myself, enjoy a lot of games from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. That said, all of them copy ideas from one another and aren't always the most original. Take Uncharted, for example. Great game, but it's clearly a rip on Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider, both of which came before it. Take Killzone, for example. Solid games, but it's clearly a science fiction FPS that came after the likes of Half Life and Halo. Take Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, for example. Decent game, but it was clearly Sony's attempt at a Super Smash Bros. game. In my opinion, Sunset Overdrive looks and feels like Crackdown, adds in some Ratchet & Clank, then dials it up to 11 and makes it its own thing. Infamous was not the first game of its kinds. I can see how some young kids may have never played games like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Crackdown, but history lesson, Infamous wasn't anything new. Sunset Overdrive is a great open world action romp that anyone can enjoy if they're not blinded by console partisanship. Expand

After playing the game it is really fun and arty as you would expect from Insomniac, these are par for the course. You can also expect a well made game with a lot of polish, nothing is broken and everything fits really well together. There are also some other things that come with Insomniac that you can expect. The game was blurry and jaggy which is not surprising as my favorite Insomniac games on the PS3, being the Ratchet and Clank Future series, were also blurry and jaggy. Its probably Insomniacs AA that they use. Its not a deal breaker, but it detracts from the amazing art in the game. So does the pop-in, but again, not deal breaking.

Other than that, my only gripe is that the missions are repetitive, and Insomniac have the nerve to crack 'jokes' about this repetition. That left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

Other than that the game is great and tons of fun. If you have an Xbox One, I'd say go get the game now. If you don't have and Xbox One, then this game shouldn't be the reason you buy one... If it is, then at least get Halo MCC and Forza Horizon 2 to sweeten the deal.

It is quite polished with a decent idea & setting, too bad the story isn't up to scratch. . Being 720p I also couldnt really tell the difference from 1080p as it runs quite smoothly. The enemies are monotonous and dont quite vary enough to keep you immersed or engaged. One major issue I have is the much hyped environment traversal. Only now after playing for hours have I quite got the hang of grinding and bouncing through the city, yet it is still excruciatingly painful for a fair portion of the time. I read a previous review of this game and they described it as "Infamous for kids", and I have to say I agree with this statement somewhat. Fair enough the city has been taken over by mutants but it just doesn't feel like it was ever alive or living and breathing. The major problem with this game however is the quest structure. 80% of the quests/activities are fetch quests. These are mostly similar to the previous quest or exactly the same. This game gets boring and old quickly, it doesnt quite have the pulling power to keep you entertained for long periods of time as I find myself getting agitated with all the grinding and jumping and repeat quests. Lastly i'd say this isnt targeted at mature audiences despite the crass humour. 6/10 Expand

If you don't have an XB1, this isn't a system seller, but collectively, the catalog is too strong to ignore, and is only improving--in addition to the console's excellent multi-tasking capabilities and features. From that perspective, not only do I recommend the game, but the console as well.

The problem for me was the game was insanely repetitive from the very beginning of the game. Most of the game is running and jumping from mission to mission, place to place which gets old fast since we've already done this in many sandbox games. Also, there is way too many tutorials that keep interrupting the flow of the gameplay. Everytime I'm getting excited to play, another tutorial interrupts the game. This would be tolerable if the rest of the game was worth it, but the shooting aspect of the game just feels like busywork. The things I liked about the game was the style and the different kinds of weapons you could get. Overall though, the humor fell really flat and was very juvenile. I think this game would appeal to younger gamers. Its not a bad game, but if you've played this style of game before, this one doesn't really bring anything new except the art style. Expand

Sunset Overdrive is not a game for me, but that doesn't mean it is a bad game, it has great color, great mechanics and pretty average music. But I found myself constantly wishing I had better mobility, I constantly felt like just grinding everywhere was more of a restriction than a mechanic. The amount of times I'd rather just scale a wall like in Assassins Creed, or run up a wall like inSunset Overdrive is not a game for me, but that doesn't mean it is a bad game, it has great color, great mechanics and pretty average music. But I found myself constantly wishing I had better mobility, I constantly felt like just grinding everywhere was more of a restriction than a mechanic. The amount of times I'd rather just scale a wall like in Assassins Creed, or run up a wall like in Prototype is unbelievable, this game wants to send you on a wild grind chase to just scale to a building top, it is a real frustration-fest, it may be stylish, but after the 20th time this happens, you are really fed up of the way the game looks and just want to scale the frigging building without all the **** The story is pretty weak and the overall mission structure is pretty generic for an open world game, there are some pop culture references that make an appearance, but they are simply that, a reference and sure you'll be like "heh, that was a thing in Breaking Bad", But a reference isn't a substitute for original comedy and Sunset Overdrives comedy is pretty weak. But this game does one of the most irritating things a modern game can do for the first hour of gameplay, the hand-holding, the tutorial limitations, my god they are frustrating, ALL I wanted to do was run around and kill **** but the damn tutorials just never stopped. Do this, do that, equip this, equip that, suck this, suck that. LIKE SERIOUSLY. I've played a Video Game before, all you literally had to tell me was how to grind, that is IT, the rest could be quite easily taught through gameplay. the modern gamer isn't a moron. Lastly is the day 1 DLC, it isn't available for purchase yet, but over 10 items from the game are locked behind a pay-wall out of the box, it looks like some sort of Pre-Order or Season Pass bonus, either way, it is sick to buy a game and to already have a large amount of content locked away from you, content which was likely included on the disc, Overall I'd say that a lot of people will enjoy this game, but it simply isn't for me, I don't like the movement, the music is not of my taste, the hand-holding is just plain ridiculous.and the day 1 DLC is just depressing. This game is plain Awful. I am an Xbox user since day one, and after playing this game, both story and multiplayer for 10 hours, I have decided that that's enough. This game has flashes of brilliance, but they fizzle out so quickly that it almost becomes tiresome to even look at the game. I had high hopes for this one, but it's just awful.

I found myself getting irritated with the constant fetch quests that the game sends you on. It's basically the same tried-and-true formula of, "Go here, kill these guys, grab the stuff and come back." Not saying that all fetch quests are bad, they just have to be done right. But the combat is so simplistic and uninspired that it feels like a chore doing those types of quests.

Did I mention the combat was simplistic? Oh yeah, that's basically an understatement. The combat is simplified to the point where all you have to do is pan your camera over an enemy and you automatically lock on. This makes the game seem extremely easy, especially when you're grinding on power lines whilst obliterating enemies who can't even hit you. The A.I. seems to have pathing issues or something because they frequently slam themselves into cars and buildings while running after you. I honestly felt like I was playing a game meant for a five-year-old. The only enemies who really gave me a problem were the beefy ones with a lot of health.

If there's one good thing I can say, it's that the graphics and effects are gorgeous. You can explore the city freely and grind all day long. Some people disagree with the cartoonish art style but I think it fits the setting well.

In conclusion, Sunset Overdrive seems like it wasn't really baked fully before it was released. They could have done so much more with the concept. I really do feel sorry for this game...

It is along the path of Titanfall where it just doesn't do ENOUGH to warrant a purchase. Graphically I love the style, and colours that the game manages to explode out of the screen, but where it takes notes from Infamous and Crackdown, it also takes notes from rail shooters and timed event games.

I might come back to Sunset Overdrive eventually, and I might love it after it lowers down in price so I can pick it up, but my review copy just didn't do the Xbox One justice. I can't really handle the lame mission structure and holo characters. I can't really grasp why I need to always be moving on Rails or else I will die or lose points. It is too much like a game for children with attention problems. If you love it, good for you, it is perfectly fine to enjoy the game, but for me, it isn't worth 70 dollars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game gives you that feeling of "oh haven't I already seen this before" as soon as you begin the game. The character customization is very limited for a game that boasts that it has a "wide variety of different cosmetic pieces of clothing or hair to choose from". Also right from the getgo the characters and the protagonist try waaaay to hard to be funny and amusing. What the game gets somewhat right is the map size, it is a huge map that has many different places to explore as well as a unique way of traversing through Sunset City. The issue though, is there is no incentive to explore the map whatsoever. The way they approached their combat and literally tried to change the meaning of an "on-rails shooter" is a fantastic idea but Insomniac Games executed it poorly in my book. It's very difficult to aim and the first mission they give you is killing a wave of enemies, that seems perfectly fine doesn't it? The issue is that every single mission seems the exact same as the last. There is no variation in mission type whatsoever and it forced me to return the game to Gamestop hours after I bought it. Sunset Overdrive is a colorful and fun addition to the action genre, that manages to entertain both the hardcore and the casual gamer. It took me 20 hours to finish the story mode, and that's not even counting the many hours that I sunk into multiplayer. I can't recommend Sunset Overdrive enough.

When the main game mechanic of your game is grinding and standing on the ground makes you better in combat, you should realize that you need to change the mechanic.

Could be an original bet, but all he got was being a generic and colored version. Repetitive gameplay, boring story, beyond the wrong strategy by a customized main character, not getting an identity and a striking figure.

I had high expectations of this game cuz it seemed to have a borderlands, dead rising kind of vibe to it. it did have that but it got really lame, really quick. after 2 whole hours i found myself yawning uncontrollably. the game tries to stimulate a person with the vibrant colors (i'm assuming to make up for the repetition and childish boring dialect) but it doesn't work. this game SUCKS.

Coming from the PC and Playstation 4 crowd, I have been looking for a good reason to own Xbox One (I usually buy all systems during a console generation so I'm not specifically a Sony fanboy, but it was cheaper and more powerful at launch). There's no way I can honestly say that this game was really worth buying an Xbox for, if that helps those folks who were considering it...it's not that it's a horrible game- it is indeed a refreshing change of pace and visuals, and the humor is awesome, but the gameplay itself is too repetitive. I would say the game is worth picking up this holiday season, but only if you've already picked up the other third party staples that should be a bit better than this game.

If you're looking for a reason to buy Xbox One, like I was, it still might be worth getting this game in a bundle, which I hear will be very competitively priced come November.

Played for about 4 hours so far, and am really enjoying this game. Visually, it is gorgeous, the use of color and the design of the city is amazing, everything is crisp and frame rate is 100% solid. Most important, the combination of gameplay types is so much fun. The customization options for the character are second to none, weapons are fun and original.
