This game is plain Awful. I am an Xbox user since day one, and after playing this game, both story and multiplayer for 10 hours, I have decided that that's enough. This game has flashes of brilliance, but they fizzle out so quickly that it almost becomes tiresome to even look at the game. I had high hopes for this one, but it's just awful.

I really wanted to love Sunset Overdrive, I really did. But it's glaring flaws can not be ignored. I'm sorry, but this game is just far too repetitive for it's own good. I found myself getting irritated with the constant fetch quests that the game sends you on. It's basically the same tried-and-true formula of, "Go here, kill these guys, grab the stuff and come back." Not saying that all fetch quests are bad, they just have to be done right. But the combat is so simplistic and uninspired that it feels like a chore doing those types of quests.

Did I mention the combat was simplistic? Oh yeah, that's basically an understatement. The combat is simplified to the point where all you have to do is pan your camera over an enemy and you automatically lock on. This makes the game seem extremely easy, especially when you're grinding on power lines whilst obliterating enemies who can't even hit you. The A.I. seems to have pathing issues or something because they frequently slam themselves into cars and buildings while running after you. I honestly felt like I was playing a game meant for a five-year-old. The only enemies who really gave me a problem were the beefy ones with a lot of health.

If there's one good thing I can say, it's that the graphics and effects are gorgeous. You can explore the city freely and grind all day long. Some people disagree with the cartoonish art style but I think it fits the setting well.

In conclusion, Sunset Overdrive seems like it wasn't really baked fully before it was released. They could have done so much more with the concept. I really do feel sorry for this game...

I couldn't finish this game. I got so bored and annoyed I just had to walk away. I hate to not finish games so I did not do this lightly. This game is very similar to the Dead Rising games except in those games the characters are likable, these characters are not. I just got sick of listening to all the unfunny dialogue, couldn't do it for one minute more. I wanted to like this game andI couldn't finish this game. This game is repetitive and no way open world. Go one block off your mission and you die. Dialog is unfunny. I'm not sure if the great reviews here are planted, but this game is nothing special.

As a big fan of Insomniac's PS games, I had huge expectations. I was completely disappointed, and stopped playing after 3 hours. The game offers no freedom, is repetitive, loud and obnoxious. I could not sell this one back soon enough!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game gives you that feeling of "oh haven't I already seen this before" as soon as you begin the game. The character customization is very limited for a game that boasts that it has a "wide variety of different cosmetic pieces of clothing or hair to choose from". Also right from the getgo the characters and the protagonist try waaaay to hard to be funny and amusing. What the game gets somewhat right is the map size, it is a huge map that has many different places to explore as well as a unique way of traversing through Sunset City. The issue though, is there is no incentive to explore the map whatsoever. The way they approached their combat and literally tried to change the meaning of an "on-rails shooter" is a fantastic idea but Insomniac Games executed it poorly in my book. It's very difficult to aim and the first mission they give you is killing a wave of enemies, that seems perfectly fine doesn't it? The issue is that every single mission seems the exact same as the last. There is no variation in mission type whatsoever and it forced me to return the game to Gamestop hours after I bought it. I Played Sunset Overdrive for 3 hours and was not impressed. I felt like i was playing ultra repetitive dead rising 3 meets infamous. It seems like more of an Xbox Live arcade game for kids under 17. Don't waste $60

When the main game mechanic of your game is grinding and standing on the ground makes you better in combat, you should realize that you need to change the mechanic.

I had high expectations of this game cuz it seemed to have a borderlands, dead rising kind of vibe to it. it did have that but it got really lame, really quick. after 2 whole hours i found myself yawning uncontrollably. the game tries to stimulate a person with the vibrant colors (i'm assuming to make up for the repetition and childish boring dialect) but it doesn't work. this game SUCKS.

Sunset Overdrive has some excellent ideas, but its ultra-repetitive. bad mission design and unsatisfying enemy encounters. it feels like some sort of borderlands and 11 rip off. controls are crap. and it is so boring after 4 hours. do not believe the hype. after destiny and WD another just hype game .

Another game that my kid and his friends would enjoy. Very goofy and colorful, the story is bland and very predictable and easily geared towards tweens and children. Pass if you'r e looking for mature games or are a man-child. If I wanted to play kid games I'd play the Wii U with my son.

Pretty much just a childs version of Infamous. Short campaign, repetitive game play with very limited story choices or dialogue choices. Could of been better.

repetitive at it's best. this game is nothing but just another game that was on the hyper bus from the hype it has received, nothing is good about it except the art style. everything else is boring and limited.

For Sunset Overdrive I have two major complaints and for me they bother me that much I can no longer continue playing the game:

    1. The humour is not only forced down your throat in a "i really hope you like our jokes" kind of way they are also constant. You can not go more than a couple of minutes without some NPC thinking he/she is the funniest person in the world, and the jokes aren't new or original they are just lame gamer jokes pointing out websites like NeoGAF or Reddit. i despise these sites in person, so i don't want them in my games.

2.The core game play mechanic of grinding is not only tedious it is also a mechanic that wasn't revolutionary 10 years ago and for Sunset Overdrive a game in 2014 their should be some way they could of brought that mechanic up to date. The mission structure is also very strange, 90% of the time you are either protecting something or fetching something and whilst RPG's make these types of missions personal and generally fun Sunset overdrive makes them as tedious as the Dead Rising 3 fetch quests.

All in all despite Sunset Overdrive's colourful graphics the game is dull, unimaginative and tedious. the way I describe the game to people is like being given a big juicy looking strawberry, biting into it and discovering that it tastes like dry wall. you just cant hide that sort of disappointment.

Boring and repetitive. Bad humour. Traversal sucks because it's on rails, it's like a very casual and acessible version of other better games. Short, tacked on co op, bad story. Too much boring ranged combat.... not worth it.

You immediately made me uninstall this game. Your poor writing skills gives the impression a silver back gorilla is trying to be funny, im sorry a lobotomize silver back gorilla.

This game just sucks. The combat is boring because the weapons have practically no ammo. And you only get more ammo occasionally which just fills up the already limited ammo the guns can have. So combat is no fun when you never have any ammo to use. And the whole game just consists of one boring fetch quest after the other. and one of them is retreaving a girls pet dog. I'm on my second playthrough and OH MY GOD! This games controls are so fluid, the story is dumb but hilarious, the in game cutscenes kinda suck as there's only like 5 animations, and the multiplayer doesn't really work but THIS GAME IS AMAZING. Its on gamepass so if you have that you should play it.

A game that would be even cooler if it didn’t try so hard to be cool. To love it you need to switch off the part of the brain responsible for good taste, but in return Sunset Overdrive relentlessly strokes the part responsible for pleasure. [13/2014, p.76]
