Stranger Things 3: The Game manages to be 'Before It's Time' past it's time. Set in 1985 following a story congruent the the Netflix Original, Stranger Things 3, if it were a retro video game. ST3:TG is an overhead 'Beat 'em Up' style game, featuring 12 Characters each with their own unique playstyle and special ability available to play, rendered in glorious 16bit graphic style. ST3:TG is an overhead 'Beat 'em Up' style game, featuring 12 Characters each with their own unique playstyle and special ability available to play, rendered in glorious 16bit graphic style. Some places in game are only accessible by certain team members, so take note of places you can't pass for later! Find various items in the game, to later use to craft add-ons to make your team tougher. There are always two characters on screen and some of the puzzles and area restriction require you switch in between Characters to pass. Got another controller, and a friend, then trust the AI no longer! Run through the game in Couch Co-op, and lend each other a hand. The game is immensely fun for anyone that loves a good retro-styled Beat 'Em Up whether or not they are a fan of Stranger Things. Also, a word for the fans out there, if you aren't up to date, it plays along side of the real story, so Spoiler Alert! Overall this is a very well made game, and stands tall in it's genre. It's a must for Fans of the series, and a good grab for anyone that likes this style of game. Warning, if you don't watch the series already, this game will make you want to! Expand

What could have been a first class game let down so badly by shockingly bad game mechanics at crucial game moments

All in all, it’s a fun throwback, hugely disposable and with a shelf life about as long as people are still talking about Stranger Things. Still, don’t let that stop you from enjoying it. [Issue#181, p.81]

As a big fan of Stranger Things, I found some decent fun to be had with ST3TG. It’s genuinely exciting to take control of these characters we’ve gotten to know over the past three seasons, even as 16-bit renditions of themselves. I also really loved discovering the locations we’ve seen on the show. The fan service on display here might be enough to sell enthusiasts of the show, however, it’s tough to recommend this for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

The pacing is generally good, but it feels less punchy than the show. On occasion, things are dragged out more than necessary with a lot of toing and froing.
