Originally launched in 2014 for Japanese XBOX 360's, Stranger in Sword City remains a solid and highly enjoyable evolution of the genre. I haven't played a dungeon crawler like this on my TV since the SEGA games of the late 80's and early 90's. I made it only halfway through the demo on XBOX ONE before deciding I needed to buy it immediately.
The only thing negative I can say is that it

The only thing negative I can say is that it is clearly a port. Experience Inc. could have most certainly made graphical improvements on the XBOX ONE but chose not to. For a next gen console with infinitely more power than its predecessor the dungeon textures were lackluster. However, with that said, the hub location scenery and character artwork were gorgeous. It just made you want to see what it would look like if the game were made from the ground up for current gen consoles.
The story and characters were good enough to keep me interested and the game-play was solid and reminiscent of the games that preceded it so long ago (so much so I reverted instinctively to using the D-pad).
All in all I'm glad I picked it up and I'm looking forward to the other games Experience Inc. has coming to XBOX.

I been thinking grabbing it for Vita (which came out later) but being able to change between art style convinced me getting the Xbone version, also because it's an originally Xbox exclusive.

I've ended up benefiting Oxijiyen art over the original design.
It's still a great game, for those that know how enjoying a rogue like RPG, that is.

No amount of lovely art can prevent this statfest from causing chronic yawns. [June 2016, p.83]

Having played on both Xbox One and Vita, I find that the big-screen experience really shows off Sword City's amazing artwork and provides a more immersive first-person experience.

Stranger of Sword City can be a little archaic as far as mechanics go, and it certainly isn't very welcoming for those not already accustomed to the slow first-person, dungeon-crawling style. It is, however, very deep in the gameplay department and showcases new mechanics to complement a rather long campaign.
