I love the minamilist approach the developer has gone with in terms of the presentation because this makes both the visuals and sound design quite charming. There is a decent amount of challenge present in the gameplay but I didn’t get frustrated because it always felt fun and rewarding. The controls remained tight and responsive throughout my time with the game and technically the game suffered with very few problems as well. There’s a decent amount of variety present in the different levels and this does stop the game from becoming repetitive. The platforming elements have been done well and they feature a good mix of old-school and modern touches at the same time. I enjoyed the challenging aspect of the game I feel the game gets too hard too quick which may be off-putting for some people. The boss battles were a little bit too generic for my liking and once defeated I didn’t get the great sense of achievement which I wanted. I’ll admit now that I went into playing StickType without high expectations and in a way I’m glad I did because I love it when a game surprises me and that’s definitely what StickType did. At its core this game is all about jumping and running so the platforming side of the game is very important. Thankfully you can tell that the developers have put a lot of thought and effort into the platforming elements because everything feels smooth and responsive and when you combine that with the very good implemented controls you end up having quite a lot of fun. Having fun is very important in a game like this because it can get pretty difficult very quickly and whilst this may be off-putting for some I actually enjoyed the challenge because it felt very rewarding for the most part. In fact the only time it didn’t feel rewarding is when you defeated the generic bosses but in the end I was easily able to look past this thanks to the variety that was present in each of the game’s levels. At the end of the day then surprising is the best way to describe this game because whilst it may not look like much it’s solid in several areas and in the end you get a lot of fun and enjoyable moments from this little title. Rarely do you find anything in StickType that goes beyond the basics, and with a story that doesn’t explain itself too well, and an overbearing difficulty on occasions, the less patient gamers may not want to stick around. However, should you be after a game that will push your capabilities, whilst providing all the essential qualities of a decent platforming experience, then StickType is a game that you need to play. The super cheap price point helps too.
