An intriguing and challenging minigolf-flavored puzzle game, with a satisfying gameplay and a nice steampunk aroma. Too bad for the several technical problems that detract from its overall value.

Steamroll manages to get a lot right with the few systems that it consists of. The game’s well structured puzzles are relayed through its clever level design, together with its interesting steam-based concept and its balanced micromanagement. The big drawback is that it’s all tethered to a story that’s about as interesting as watching paint dry, with visual and audio design that’s equal to that.

In terms of content there is a decent amount for you to get to grips and the variety that’s present means that getting through it isn’t a chore. Each different mechanic in the game has been done well and the best thing is that each mechanic is interesting which keeps repetitiveness on a low level. The controls react extremely well and they’re fluid and responsive at all times which means any mistake is purely down to you and down to you only. There isn’t really anything that stands out in both the visuals and sound design meaning the presentation is very forgettable and lacks flare and overall excitement. Technically the game suffers with a couple of issues every now and then which can frustrate you a little. While the story can be good at times on the whole there just isn’t enough within it to keep things interesting. I didn’t know too much about Steamroll before playing it, Thankfully the puzzles were a nice surprise. At its core then this game focuses mainly on puzzles but that’s not all it has because it does have a few other interesting mechanics in play as well. This then means the game has plenty of variety within its content and there’s more than enough content to keep you satisfied as well which means you do get good value for your money. In terms of problems the game does have a few though so you won’t be getting a perfect experience. Thankfully though the problems aren’t too severe and if you’re one of those people who don’t mind a basic presentation and a few technical issues along the way then you’ll be able to easily look past these issues when it comes to the grand scheme of things. At the end of the day then whilst it has a few shortcomings Steamroll delivers more fun moments than frustrating moments and the uniqueness when it comes to its puzzles means this game is a decent addition to the puzzle genre and in the end it does more than enough to get a recommendation from me.
