The original State of Decay is a game that I placed a huge amount of enjoyable hours into and to say I was looking forward to State of Decay 2 would be a massive understatement. Thankfully State of Decay 2 pretty much met my lofty expectations in all areas and despite it suffering with a few problems here and there it’s quite clear to see that this game has significant improvements over the original. The biggest and most enjoyable improvement for me was without a doubt the combat. The combat in the game is excellent and killing zombies never gets boring thanks to the varied and satisfying moves you can perform on the zombies. The gameplay on the whole feels improved as well and in my opinion it remains fun for longer. The main reason why it remains fun for longer is because it has more variety than in the previous game and this variety is definitely evident in both the missions you can undertake and the maps you undertake the missions on. If you like game’s that offer you lots of content then you will love State of Decay 2. I’m not exaggerating when I say that there’s almost an endless amount of replayability present in this game and the best thing is that this content can be enjoyed in both short bursts and long periods as well. When playing the game though you will however bump into a few bugs along the way, and whilst most of these bugs are small and not game-breaking they can still be frustrating and ruin the immersion levels somewhat at times. I was however able to look past these issues quite easily because you end up forgetting about them thanks to the different mechanics and elements the game has. Thankfully these different mechanics hold up really well most of the time and can be enjoyed in both single player and multiplayer. I must admit that I was really looking forward to the game’s multiplayer offering and thankfully when it works it’s really fun. The multiplayer option though does suffer with a few problems and they will have to make some tweaks to make it a better experience, but I appreciate the effort that has gone into the core idea though. Without a doubt one of my favourite things about the game was the presentation side of the things. Visually the game can look awesome at times and the accompanying sound design creates a very eerie atmosphere which in turn makes you become very immersed in the gameplay. At the end of the day if you were a fan of the first State of Decay then you will thoroughly enjoy State of Decay 2. It’s took what was good from the first game and improved it and even though it suffers with quite a few bugs these bugs still didn’t stop me from having a very enjoyable experience and these bugs also don’t stop me from giving the game a big thumbs up. This game is worth buying. The bugs seem to be the only major problem going for it. Rating it as high as 10 is stupid while rating as low as zero is just as stupid. It's decent game. So if like zombies, base building, low prices, and you have even a bit of patience, this game could be for you.

such a bad game. I would even go to say it's one of the worst games I've played of all time. So many bugs, and such a punishing game, especially when you can't hit any zombies because of a bug. don't buy honestly

They are calling this a Triple-A title? It's the same as the original State of Decay. You do the same things, over and over. And OMG the Bugs. You are on the most powerful console ever, PS2 graphics? Weird voice acting. I only recommend trying this if you have Gamepass. If you don't have GP save your money. it will $15 in 2 months.

    Many bugs.
Xbox 360 Graphics in retro is better than this crap.
The game crashed in a short time.
Poor content if you compare with the SOD1.
Only added one new Zombi, disease, cooperative and 4K support.

Absolutely awful. I hated the previous game due to the lack of story, the tedious missions and how repetitive it was. This is more of the same, but it feels worse and it is a snoozefest.

State of Decay 2 has a lot going for it if you're into the genre - it's both extremely frustrating and very addicting. For as ambitious as it's scope you can't help but notice they only slapped one coat of paint on it at times, but i generally don't complain too much about slight technical glitches if the core gameplay mechanic is solid. For as ambitious as it's scope you can't help but notice they only slapped one coat of paint on it at times, but i generally don't complain too much about slight technical glitches if the core gameplay mechanic is solid. Where I would call it's level of resource management rather overwhelming and meticulous, if you press through it you'll eventually see the logic of its ways.

This game is mostly run-of-the-mill fetch questing in an open world environment. You set up a base and then fortify it with other random survivors you find on the map. It does a good job of covering what would be considered necessary basics in the zombie apocalypse in a very general sense that becomes more natural to you through trial and error.

It's really a low-impact game, and doesn't require a lot of twitchy focus to have a good time - that being said the name of the game is BE PREPARED. If you run out looking for supplies without some of your own, things may turn sour pretty quickly and you'll find your character out of stamina limping away from a car that got glitched on a guard rail - cursing the 4 rucksacks you've squirreled away in the trunk as you save your last burst of dodge power to avoid that flashing dot directly behind you on your radar for a thousand yards or so back to your home base or outpost.

As you use different characters in your community you level up their general stats and this happens pretty quickly, so you get a lot of rewarding feedback from the game regularly that keeps you trekking forward.

I really recommend playing the game more in shorter bursts of an hour or so - after a while constantly calling in on the network to find food because none of your survivors knows how to garden and can't learn a new skill can get tiring, and you may end up losing one of your favorite community members. for good. Honestly your first playthru of this game will be more of a warmup for your next better-planned community, but that mostly depends on how excited you are about getting it better the next time around or moving to a different game.

In closing - there are LOTS of glitches, they will frustrate you a lot at times - you will lose resources and seemingly not be able to finish side quests for no reason without direction. That being said, I like smashing in zombies and managing statistics in video games. I feel the scope and general feeling of reward from taking care of your end times community makes most of these complaints minimal in the grand scheme of open world games today. I'm sure i'll eventually lose interest in it's repetitiveness like I have all other games that follow similar layouts - but I'm definitely enjoying it for the time being and have already gotten my money's worth out of this budget title. Recommended!

The game grabs your attention right away as you find and begin to build a settlement and level-up your characters.
However, the game soon devolves into a series of never-ending chores punctuated by mission that roll in faster than can be addressed. And this is when the frustration really sets in. One of the key aspects of the game is managing inventory and survivors. However, when on a mission, you can't switch between survivors without canceling the mission. Want to switch characters because your currently controlled character injured? Too bad. The game won't allow it without cancelling the mission. Oh, and some missions are on a timer, which is kept a mystery to the player. More than once I've been halfway across the map heading towards a mission only to have it time-out, even though no timer was indicated.
There are other annoying features as well. The game advises the player to take a companion with you, but most of the time they're so brainless, they only serve as a pack mule to help you carry stuff, but you can't switch to their inventory when on a mission. The game also advises you to use explosives to destroy plague hearts, but as you encounter one, your companion runs up to melee the thing only to be knocked back and injured by your explosives.
And then there are zombies. The game world populates very fast with zombies. And more than a few times I've cleared out an area only to have a massive hoard of zombies magically appear seconds later and attack me.
But your enemies aren't all zombies. In this game you are constantly battling against bugs. Your driving full speed and suddenly your vehicle hits an invisible object. Sometimes that invisible object causes your ride to catch fire. Sometimes a bug prevents you from exiting the flaming wreck and you die.
When your character dies, they're gone from the game. That's it. There's not player-controlled save-game feature, so when the character you've spent hours leveling up suddenly dies due to flaws in the game, it's very frustrating.
The game's title: State of Decay is an appropriate one as it seems to aptly describe this series.

State of Decay is a tricky beast. I can understand why so many people are down on the game, but it's very much a Marmite game.

I think some people play games to blitz through a story and tick off the "complete" box, but this isn't really a good game for that. I've not done the maths but I would hazard a guess that if you did that the game would be just a couple of hours long and likely you'd miss out on a lot of the mechanics. The fact is there's very little in terms of story in the game, it's not really what the game is about...

If you're treating it a little more as the survival game it's intended to be, then you'll find a lot of fun - it's good to go exploring, trying to find bits and bobs for your base and to find other survivors, I enjoyed finding a new camp and trying to learn each area and in turn form a well established camp of survivors with allies around the map. The random events worked well and the new (albeit few) mechanics since the first game were welcome.

It's definitely a recommended game if you enjoy survival games, zombies and the opportunity to play some co-op stuff and if you go in knowing what to expect you'll have a blast - but it's definitely not for everyone.

But certain aspects of the game have completely ruined it in my opinion. First, fuel runs out in vehicles way too fast. Every vehicle in the game must literally use gallons per mile instead of getting miles per gallon. Second, all zombies should have been just the basic zombie. The developers' obsession with "boss level" enemies/zombies just makes the game too difficult and frustrating at times and ruins the game, especially when all deaths are final and permanent. And the fact that all weapons, melee and firearm, take damage every time they are used is insane. I broke a crowbar after using it against regular zombies maybe a dozen times. In real life, I could hit concrete as hard as I can with a crowbar all day every day and never ever break it. And a pistol I used in the game broke, didn't just run out of ammo, but broke, after only a couple dozen shots. If this game did not have Feral or Juggernaut zombies, guns never wore out, jammed, or broke, ammo was more plentiful, certain melee weapons like crowbars, aluminum and steel bats, and machetes never broke, fuel consumption in vehicles was more realistic for scale distances, vehicles could be repaired automatically when parked in a reserved space at your base if you had a community member with a mechanic skill, and it offered the kind of auto aim option seen in GTA V and GTA Online for non-scoped weapons, and allowed you to look through the scope and zoom in when using a scoped weapon, and you didn't keep getting asked to cover random npcs from other communities in suicide missions, and you didn't need a gardening skill to grow food in a garden, and home base was completely secure with no zombies ever able to get into your base, then this could have been a great game. Especially if it also offered easy ways to upgrade vehicles in the game without requiring a vehicle workshop that I seem unable to even add to my base in spite of having a community member with a 5-star mechanic skill, and a special kit that seems unobtainable. Generally State of Decay 2 looks more like a remaster of the original game than a true sequel. It just does not expand the formula enough and still contains too many repetitive activities that make you go through the motions for the sake of getting it done. That’s why I recommend playing it in short sessions. I have no doubt that people unfamiliar with the first State of Decay will enjoy the second one much more, as everything will be new to them.
