Unlike many people who have left their reviews here, I'm an Xbox fan who thinks that Microsoft has hastened to launch this game. By the way it came out it deserves 5/10 for the huge amount of bugs and lack of quality I experienced.

Weak story, you repeat the same things all the time. There is also no excitement, no "horror" and "frightening" feeling. The conversations are weak and non-realistic, there is no vibe and excitement in the character's voices. Graphics are weak, even GTA 5 from 5 years ago is way better.

So I created an account just to review this game.
I'm about 15-20 hours into it and I can say it's got me somewhat hooked. The exploring and finding items is great and the atmosphere of the game is what one would expect from a zombie survival game.

The base building and resource/time managment make the game quite tedious and grindy-which I happen to like.
The graphics aren't as bad as most people are saying. Could they have been better? Sure, but it doesn't really take away from the gameplay.
My issues are with the vehicle physics and the fighting.
The vehicles tend to get stuck in the most ridiculous places and more often than not, while surrounded by zombies. It's extremely frustrating to lose a vehicle because it got stuck in the ground.
Secondly the fighting. The gun fights are something you would expect from a first generation console, ridiculously clunky and awkward. The hand to hand is simply a mashing of X or B then RB+X. Very boring and outdated.
Leveling up skills reminds me of GTA and well implemented.
All in all the game is great except for those small complaints and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a challenge.
Thia is definately not your average fps. This is a challenging survival game that tests your ability to manage a growing community during a post apocalyptic setting and the needs and problems associated with such.

This game is a tremendous letdown for any Xbox owners starving for exclusives. The game runs and looks GOD AWFUL and the multiplayer “co-op” is nothing more than one person progressing while the others simply help out. It’s garbage. The motion blur makes this game look like a Mr. Krabs “woah” meme.

The game has been fun so far and I have been enjoying it a lot. Does it have bugs, yes it does; but what open world game does not? There is a lot to the game and on missions strategy is key. These are all questions you find yourself asking a lot. When playing this game try to remember that it is not a AAA title and should not be compared to games that are. This is a budget title and is priced at half of the cost of AAA games. There are bugs, the graphics are not in line with God of War, Tomb Raider, Halo or any of the other games I have heard people compare it to. Don't compare a Ferrari to a Honda Accord. The bottom line is did I have fun? Yes I did and that is what my rating is based off of.

Please take a look at the other reviews that are giving zero for the score and observe that almost all of the zero scores are coming from people who have reviewed nothing but PS4 games. If you are on the fence and love these type of games and want to try before you buy, give Game Pass a shot, if you find its not your cup of tea then you are only out $10.

Bug ridden and repetitive game-play loop. Many of the inbuilt systems in the game end up being meaningless or just poorly executed.

    1) Bases are simply just a glorified storage locker + craft station. The developer does not understand the desire for players to create an oasis (which they can fortify via their own efforts) while surrounded by deadly zombies. Some highlights:

    - Watch towers does nothing to protect your base, NPCs will not shoot from it, they will climb down from the tower to melee the zombies instead.
    - Walls are mostly for looks - zombies will simply climb over it to chew on you while you are browsing your inventory or managing your base.
    - Upgraded medical facilities are underwhelming as blood plague is a mere nuisance (ingredients too easy to get, too forgiving if you get infected).
    - "Permanent safe area" around base and outposts as stated in game is a joke.

    2) Enclaves (or NPC survivor communities) were supposed to add depth to the game by allowing the players to form beneficial relationships with them (via assistance) or provide conflict if they become hostile to your community. Hint: They don't.

    - NPC groups are there to constantly beg you for help like a bunch of helpless whiny babies. The moment you fail to help them ONCE, they will pack up and leave - even if you previously helped them.
    - You are constantly swamped with MULTIPLE requests from various NPC groups and you won't be able to make it to all of them in time before some of them expire.
    - The NPC groups do not grow / expand or lead to more interesting side stories.
    - The payoff for helping them is minimal at best. (farming influence + the odd recruit)

    3) Story is a snooze-fest. I won't spoil it here but it just involves doing the tutorial quest and then plague hearts over and over for a set number of times + a legacy quest (you get assigned one (out of 4 possible) based on the tenet of your community leader). The game literally ends once you finish the legacy quest. That's it. Really.

    - Many recycled side-quests (e.g. the greatest song lyrics ever! written by random npc A).
    - General busywork gets boring quick. Nobody in your community wants to work, you will always be the guy bringing home the resources, everyone else just sits at base and complains about stuff, or actively sabotage you by destroying resources in your stockpile.
    - Infestations on must be cleared by YOU, all the other survivor groups are just for show.

    4) Bugs aplenty - Stuck in wall? check. Disappearing UI? check. Weird physics **** that have your car doing acrobatics after hitting a guard rail? check. Camera glitching out? Check. Invisible zombies that are still able to chew your face off? Check.

There are too many bugs to list. And we haven't even started on the multiplayer bugs yet. Suffice to say some of your best moments in this game would be to laugh at the bugs. And if they ask me to rate their game on the start menu one more time....

    5) There are many other issues with this game to list here. Flat characters with boring voiced one liners, most zombies look the same, ladders refusing to register your character most of the time so enjoy falling to your death despite pressing w like the game ask you to etc etc.

    Summary:
Avoid this steaming pile of dog**** for now. The fanboys are busy burying their head in the sand and screaming praise for this SOD 1.5 crap that took FIVE years to make. Ignore them - it's really telling when the only positive thing most of them can say is "if you like SOD 1 you will love SOD 2". Hahahahaha please.

Zombie games are a tired concept now, it is unfortunate that Undead Labs screwed this up so badly. We may never get a decent GTA + base building sandbox zombie apocalypse game. Sigh.

The game itself is repetitive, have poor combat mechanics, bad animations, graphics looks outdated, little to no story elements, coop is poorly implemented and the base game is not even close to be worth 30$ which they are charging it for (and defiantly not 50$ for the deluxe)

While many of these are great games or fun modes, it gets to the point where they all feel the same. When the original State of Decay was released, it was a mixed bactch of old and new mechanics that worked well, but overall was a flawed experience. The one thing that it got right was death: when your character died, there was no reloading a checkpoint to try again - the character and any of the precious items they were holding were gone. You were then given the option to take over one of the other survivors in your encampment. The settlements were one of the things that made the original unique but was a double-edged sword, as the settlement required so much attention that you rarely had time to go out and explore the game world or scavenge for supplies.pres

All in all, the sequel paints a much prettier landscape to explore, but many of the other lingering issues remain. The settlements in this are almost as annoying as Preston Garvey requesting your assistance with a settlement in Fallout 4. Any time I ventured outside of the base, I was told that it was under attack, often meaning I would have to scramble back to avoid a catastrophic loss, which I experienced early in the game on my initial playthrough. Playing the game in co-op is a nice change, but you are required to stay within a close proximity to the host. Allowing you to have one or two of your comrades stay at the base to keep it safe while you and your optional fourth friend scavenge would have been a more ideal situation, but the opportunity for this was passed up. I'm not sure if co-op was an afterthought, but in addition to this limitation, your character will not gain any progress towards their own game when helping out a friend.

Like I mentioned previously, the visuals have been greatly improved, especially the open world. The outdoor aspects are on par with many of the AAA open world titles on the market today. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the interior spaces, which often appear flat and lifeless. You'll also come across many rooms or garages that are carbon copies of the house you were just in minutes before. Since repetition is a huge part of this game, the zombie models are limited as well, with hoards of the same zombies lingering about. While they move well, the visuals accompanying the head-shots are simply dreadful, with the heads popping as if they were nothing but helium filled balloons. I have played and enjoyed games with visuals this bad, if not worse, but it doesn’t help with immersion.

The general control scheme works well, although the lack of direction in the game world as well as the building mechanics makes this title highly inaccessible. During the opening mission, I spent well over a half hour simply trying to find where in the base to drop off the mission specific item I was sent to retrieve. Much like the original, the story mode consists primarily of never ending fetch quests, or going out to search for other settlements to potentially bring into your own. What do the new settlements want, you ask? You can always expect an assortment of fetch quests. I also found it rather startling that while they asked me to go find food, they didn't care that I stole their food sitting out in their camp - not even a harsh word is said.

While the co-op can be satisfying, the overall package and lack of progression make this feel like a self-published release and far from the standard Microsoft has been known for. After the failed release of Sea of Thieves you'd think they would learn their lesson, but at this point it's easy to see why they have been releasing their mediocre first party games for free via the Game Pass subscription service. If you're like me and are a Game Pass subscriber, it's worth a go for a few hours of entertainment, but I would strongly recommend not paying full retail price for State of Decay 2.

State of Decay 2 is going to be very hit and miss for a number of people. If you can ignore the flaws, there is a fun game to be had when played with a friend. That said, even if you ignore its flaws, you can’t deny that this game was not ready for release.

Generally State of Decay 2 looks more like a remaster of the original game than a true sequel. It just does not expand the formula enough and still contains too many repetitive activities that make you go through the motions for the sake of getting it done. That’s why I recommend playing it in short sessions. I have no doubt that people unfamiliar with the first State of Decay will enjoy the second one much more, as everything will be new to them.
