Although it has been part of the Xbox PC line-up for quite some time, having Star Renegades on Xbox consoles is a great thing. For most this is a combat-focused RPG with an addictive battle system, smooth pacing, and fantastic neon presentation. If you are a fan of Battle Chasers: Nightwar then Star Renegades is the perfect game to fill that niche.

Although I can say that Star Renegades was an enjoyable game in short bursts, it isn’t a game to sit down and beat in one sitting, as it will most likely cause bouts of rage quitting. The strategy elements combined with the nostalgia factor in the atmosphere of Star Renegades still doesn’t overcome the drain factor of continuous gameplay. This is a game that I feel would be better built into a full-blown RPG, as the strategy and the basis of a story is there but definitely needs to be fleshed out a bit more. Fans of the rougelike genre should enjoy Star Renegades for a bit, but probably wouldn’t go back to it after completing it.

Star Renegades is quite a fun game with gorgeous graphics and engaging combat. I would have never thought a turn-based JRPG-style game couldStar Renegades is quite a fun game with gorgeous graphics and engaging combat. I would have never thought a turn-based JRPG-style game could be so tactical until playing Star Renegades, and I played my fair share over the years. There are a lot of ways to optimize your turns through careful planning of attacks and staggers. As you move through the difficulty levels these decisions go from simply being ideal to being absolutely necessary to survive the fight. Outside of combat, there are some very interesting design choices made with this game that definitely make it unique in its design. Your party members can form relationships which give certain bonuses as well as unlocking new characters and there are branching paths which require some careful planning to optimize your run in shops, recruitment between planets, and leveling is based on a shared resource rather than individual experience points which you decide where they are best utilized on your team. Although for a turn-based JRPG-like, you will pretty much live inside of menus. Some interface issues that I might let slide in another genre just becomes frustrating after a few hours of playing. Picking targets can feel clunky at times and getting information about who is being attacked from whom can become nearly impossible when there are a lot of attacks going on, not enough attention is given to status effects, and damage calculations can be hard to read. At times a single button press on the controller will be read as multiple although I was playing on the go with an OG 2103 Xbox controller, which can mean the difference between winning and losing a fight. Fortunately you are allowed a single redo of a turn per run, but you might not get a chance to use it if the mistake is too impactful. There isn't much variety from one run to the next. The combat and party compositions are fun enough to play through the game multiple times, but I don't see myself playing this all that much longer. That being said, I've already gotten more out of my purchase than a lot of the games in the genre that are available. I'd say this is more of a matter of the replay ability of some of the absolute rogue-lite games that have come out over the years. I wouldn't let the list of shortcoming stall you from purchasing the game, just set your expectations accordingly and enjoy what’s on offer on your Xbox One in Star Renegades. Expand

Another mixed salad of old other people's ideas with the sauce of a stupid plot.
Boring, useless. Angers more than entertains.
