Each character starts with 10 cards, and is granted one of three cards after each combat victory. Chose your path as you ascend the Spire, with a new path generated with every play through. You will collect artifacts as you progress, that change the rules, each in their own magical way. A map Seed system is in place so you can also challenge the same path over and over by using the unique set of letters and numbers, or whatever you want to enter. Each path contains Battles, Random Encounnters, Shops and Camps. Battles pit you against random foes, and you do not normally heal afterwards. Random encounters can vary wildly, from combat to epic treasure. Shops sell cards potions and artifacts, potions being one time use, that causes different effects. The game play of Slay the Spire is down right addictive, you can move at your own pace, and beating the elite, and boss encounters are gratifying. Slay the Spire is a unique and challenging, experience that fans of both Card Games, and Turn Based RPGs will enjoy! Expand

I played a lot in a short time. A nice card game, really. But after some hours it is always the same. And you play alone. And when you're done the end is not very satisfying. It says, you have to do it all again. And again. And again.
The characters are good balanced and have some unique abilities. But after some runs you say, it's enough. Maybe with multiplayer I would have more

Relaxing way to pass time and rewards thoughtful strategy. I find myself playing this game more than AAA titles. It has a good deal of randomness and unlockables to keep things interesting.
I have ~30 hours playtime and it’s still fun. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this game!

So to my excitement when this became available for Game Pass...I thought awesome..now let’s see what all the fuss is about. Good lord this game sucks. I gave it a good chance and it’s just so boring. Maybe the nerds are trying to be edgy or whatever by thinking gameplay over graphics because let’s just say there is no animation to your attacks. It’s use your card and it does it’s damage or blocking and that’s it. So you think..it’s all about strategy and it’s depth...nah..this game sucks and whoever says it’s great is full of bleep. The game was boring and not fun at all...

I gave it a two because it’s a game that would be suited for mobile or the Nintendo switch as it’s pretty pick up and play only if your beyond bored...

What a underrated card building game, if you like turn based strategy games with deck building give the game a play. Its a must play. Works great on xcloud also, and free on xbox game pass.

Very good deck-building rogue game. The way your character traverses maps is very similar to FTL, navigating enemies, merchants, and miscellaneous encounters as you head to the boss encounter of each zone. If FTL is a 9, then Slay the Spire is fairly an 8, as it lacks the combat complexity and incredible soundtrack of FTL.

This game is addicting. I grew up playing TCGs and the deckbuilding was my favorite part, so I think making it a mechanic is so cool. The difficulty is challenging, but fair, and definitely shoots up with each act change.

Slay the Spire is a great game...to a point.

The problem is that the endgame -- once you have cleared the base quest with all three characters -- is preposterously difficult, even for a Roguelike. In a genre classic such as Hades, the player is rewarded for experimenting with different builds based on drops. In StS, if you don't luck out and get the exact right combination of cards, at exactly the right point in the game, you're totally effed. Enemies are idiotically overpowered, and minor mistakes can be catastrophic. This turns what was an absolutely thrilling and addictive experience into a lame, frustrating grind. Why bother to keep playing if it all comes down to dumb luck? An enormous disappointment.

UPDATE: Dropped the score from a 6 to a 4 due to the absurd end-game difficulty. Your capacity to slay the heart has virtually nothing to do with skill, and is entirely based on luck. It is *possible*, but will require you to get every requisite card, in a particular order, while landing only on enemies that it is possible to defeat. The developers ruined an otherwise excellent deck-building experience with ridiculously imbalanced difficulty. A challenge is welcome, but rolling the dice -- which is all that the latter stages of Slay is -- gets very boring very fast.

Slay the Spire is a turn-based strategy game that makes use of cards to offer you choices in battle, but this is way oversimplifying the game. It is not an action RPG or a JRPG. I played this game on game pass and I loved it. It is very strategic as you have to take devastating debuffs in both the combat and campaign map if you want to win. It combines rng with strategy to help make the game both fun and difficult. Sometimes the game can screw you over but if you are smart you will win. Good game? Yes. Overpriced? Definately! It looks and feels like it was made to be played on mobile phones. Yet another example of an independent developer thinking that their bite sized offering is worth almost half the price of a triple A blockbuster.

As a huge fan of deck building games i was sceptical at first of this unique approach to the genre mixing it with rouge like genre, and i must say i was very happy with the final product. With loads of different deck variants along with the unique class builds the game has to offer, there is so many hours of content to this addicting game. 100% worth a try!!

Card-based combat doesn't get much more satisfying than in Slay The Spire and its roguelike campaign is quite a rewarding challenge.
