The roots of the Shift franchise may well lie in flash games but Shift Quantum brings the franchise to consoles in style. The game's Shift mechanic is easy to understand, but when different gameplay mechanics are introduced as the game goes on, it becomes a challenge to master. Players can do so at their own pace without the pressure of a timer, and the reset button makes it easy to start over if mistakes are made.

It tests the mind in ways others cannot, and with the delights of the online community continuing to push it along, will ensure that even once the reasonably lengthy and highly entertaining campaign is done and dusted, there will nearly always be a reason to head back in to the negative space of Shift Quantum.

Shift Quantum is a fantastic little puzzler that goes for broke creating unique spins on its core mechanic. It’s stumped me on more than one occasion, but its quick levels and pick-up-and-play nature made it easy to put down and try again when my brain was ready for the challenge. It’s too bad the packaging is mediocre, and there are some small but glaring oversights, but those issues aren’t aggressive enough to ruin the core experience if this is your type of game.

I love games that require you to use your brain to complete because when you complete a difficult puzzle you get a great sense of achievement.I love games that require you to use your brain to complete because when you complete a difficult puzzle you get a great sense of achievement. Over the past few year’s we’ve seen an influx of puzzle games and some of them have actually been brilliant and very enjoyable to say the least. Shift Quantum thankfully can be included in this brilliant list of games and on the whole it’s probably one of the most enjoyable puzzle games I’ve ever played. One of the main reasons why Shift Quantum shines brighter than some of the other puzzle games I’ve played before is down it it’s fantastic mechanics. Each mechanic plays a very important part in completing a puzzle and when they all combine together you end up realising that the puzzles are not only clever but also fun as well. Some of the puzzles though will cause you a little bit of frustration along the way, but I was able to look past this quite easily thanks to the variety each of the levels had. It also helped that restarting a level is very quick so you don’t have to wait ages to try your luck again, which is great. In terms of content there is quite a lot for you to sink your teeth into and you won’t be getting bored anytime soon thanks to the community based levels. Without a doubt being able to create and play other people’s levels gives the game a lot of replayability and it also gives the game a unique vibe. Creating a level yourself is also a very enjoyable affair because the game allows you a lot of freedom when creating, which means you can pretty much create any level that you want and make it as fun or as difficult as you want as well. Thankfully creating the levels is also not complicated and that’s mainly down to the very good controls that have been implemented. Speaking about the controls they thankfully remain fluid and responsive throughout your time with the game and this is very good because in a game of this ilk it’s very important. Another thing that’s an important feature for me in a game like this is the presentation side of things, and thankfully they’ve done a very good job here. Visually the game has a lovely black and white art style that fits in with the gameplay extremely well and the sound design that accompanies the visuals also does a good job of fitting in with the gameplay as well. At the end of the day if you have any interest in puzzle games at all then you will thoroughly enjoy what Shift Quantum has to offer. Throughout your time with the game you will notice that not only does Shift Quantum feature clever puzzles it also features clever and well implemented mechanics as well and this means that the gameplay on the whole is pretty much flawless, which in turn means the game gets a massive thumbs up from me.
