As a love letter to Shinobi, Shadow Gangs on Xbox One gets a lot right. It’s more of a remake than a spiritual sequel, but it looks the part and plays sweetly too. But as niches go, the one that Shadow Gangs wants to fill is incredibly small: we suspect that modern beat ‘em up fans will find it too wilfully unfair, while old-school brawler fans will have to overlook the complete lack of innovation

In the grand scheme of things, Shadow Gangs is an accomplished reimagining of a seemingly forgotten series. While its gameplay is rooted in the past, the visuals have modern-day sheen – Shadow Gangs‘ HD sprites really pop out of the screen, and the environments are both varied and detailed. It’s far from perfect, but there’s plenty here to delight any classic Shinobi fan.

All fans of that favorite franchise that premiered as a side-scrolling arcade title back in 1987 has finally seen it reborn anew better than before with Shadow Gangs!
This is more than a resurrection, it’s a bundle of joy and a constant flow of rewarding game moments. Fans like me of the original games are no doubt enjoy seeing the series resurrected for the better by this game.
Kudos to the admirable five yearlong effort of developer JKM corp, which ultimately made an astounding package resurrecting this long-dead gameplay that Shinobi perfected from its predecessor rolling thunder by Namco.
I played first as rising ninja, it gave me a few hits before death and reached the second level with rushing bikers and lombo drivers! At that moment I knew I should restart the game under ninja or crimson ninja difficulty. This game is to be enjoyed granularity, death after death, meter after meter to really appreciate all of it, and it’s more than worth it! Every new level or encounter is a reward for your hard efforts and a forgotten frustration to push a little further to the next amazement.
Under ninja and crimson ninja difficulty, think dark souls but shinobi-style. And I feel it’s how it should be played!
    Time to reach Act2!… :-D

Shadow Gangs is a Retro 2D Side-Scrolling Action Platformer. Following in the path of Ninja Gaiden, and wearing the Shoes of Shinobi, ShadowShadow Gangs is a Retro 2D Side-Scrolling Action Platformer. Following in the path of Ninja Gaiden, and wearing the Shoes of Shinobi, Shadow Gangs Delivers unforgiving Ninja Action. You are Dan, Ninja Master, and after your family is kidnapped by the Evil Shadow Gangs, you set out to crush them and save your family. Nearly a clone of Shinobi, the fans of the SEGA series will find nothing but nostalgia with this game. Shadow Gangs features hand drawn art rendered in the style of 16bit Arcade games. With a soundtrack just as kick ass as the enemies, that took five eyears to develop, the action feels seriously intense. You have to battle your way through five nails hard stages with wild bosses. The game has three difficulty modes, easy for people who didn't play Shinobi, Normal for those who did, and Hard for those who hate themselves, or are simply master savants at this style gameplay. If you are easily frustrated, or don't have wild reflexes, you should play the game on easy the first time. The game is hard, like seriously hard, and that might deter new players. You will be required to bring your Ninja reflexes, and awareness to save your family from the Shadow Gangs. Shinobi fans shouldn't pass this title up, and if you ever wondered about it, here's a chance to experience what nijas of the 90's went through! Expand
