    Story is good.
Gameplay mechanics are ok, my only complaint is; your hands and fingers get hurt and tired at some battles after pressing the buttons so many times, this game requires certain focus because enemies attack you from all sides, up to 5 enemies can be fighting you and you have to watch your guard, while you're in the middle of fighting one, another one attacks you from behind.

This game wasn't terrible, just excruciatingly mediocre, lacking innovation and failing to captivate.

This launch title for the Xbox One is a case of style over substance. It's packed with cinematic pizazz and looks great. Unfortunately, the gameplay gets repetitive after a few hours, but it's still fun. Combat is comparable to Batman: Arkham Asylum. However, there are fewer attack moves and enemy types. Levels are linear with only a few areas that can be explored to find hidden treasures. This launch title for the Xbox One is a case of style over substance. However, there are fewer attack moves and enemy types. Levels are linear with only a few areas that can be explored to find hidden treasures. The campaign is a 6-7 hour adventure that features an intriguing story and fantastic visuals. While it's not a very long game, the fun two player co-op modes make up for the short length.

If there ever was a "Ryse 2", then plenty of additions would have to made. "Son of Rome" is an enjoyable action title that lacks variety. If your expectations aren't high, you'll probably have a good, gory time with this one. It's the only Xbox One game that adapts the PS4's emphasis on storytelling and cinematic cutscenes. I would give it a 7.3 out of 10.

Audio and visuals have stood the test of time quite well. Gamplay is simple, and gets very repetitive over time. Story is alright. Overall - the game is fun to play, the length is perfect because the gameplay would not make me stay with this title much longer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The later quarter of the game severely lets it down but nevertheless it's a fun less than 10 hour experience. Combat is incredibly repetitive albeit the execution system especially the duo executions are brilliant I just wish there was more. Story is very lacklustre as are the characters. Favourite mission has to be the very Helms Deep-like one. Nevertheless I'd like to a game like this in a similar ilk, just much more refined and with more depth. Expand

A visually beautiful and brilliant game with a promising but over-the-top combat system, and that's it. There is no exploration, no main character development, no visible progress in the combat mechanics. It's like the "assassin's creed", but no jumps, open world, stealth and all that stuff that keeps the game alive for a long time even after it's finished. Granted I certainly didn't pay $60 for this game, but at the bargain price I got it for, it provided me with a solid week of fun playing through the campaign on regular difficulty and then on the highest difficulty. This was followed by an additional week of going through the multiplayer (which, on Xbox is still playable; I was getting matches 3 out of 4 times).

There is a lot to be desired in the levelling up system (half-baked doesn't begin to explain it's ineptitude), but it's a fun romp with an aesthetic and time period (albeit, stupidly historically inaccurate) that is often not seen in games.

All, in all, it deserves a slightly better score than the average here, but seeing how you can pick it up for the price of renting a movie, it's definitely worth at least going through the campaign on regular difficulty.

Have fun, just don't expect to get a lifetime's enjoyment out of it.

The environments of the game are still some of the best I've seen in any game. The large action set pieces are insane. Voice acting is pretty good as were the characters. The biggest indicator that this was a good game to me was the feeling of wanting more after completing the relatively short story. Overall, I'd recommend this to pretty much anyone who loves action games. If you're into story-driven narratives, maybe look elsewhere. Expand

If the game is going to be remembered for something, that's going to be the graphics, which were great. There're some other good things like the gameplay of the combat or the level desing that are worked out. However, all the good things this game has are covered by all his weakest points.
The story is really short (only eight levels) and simple. Scriptwritters could have taken much more advantage of the setting; a story based on the ancient roman empire should have told much more. In addition, the online mode does not worth it, so the game experience is in general short.
Ryse: Son of Rome may not be a terrible game but not a great one neither... It's just a simple Hack and Slash title to have some hours of entertaintment.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a really good looking game, but at the same time incredible stupid. Thanks to the graphics and the amount of brutal combat the adventure managed to entertain, at least for a bit. If you find Ryse on sale it can be worth a closer look, but for a full price game it’s a disappointment.
