    The SaGa series is one of Square Enix's most beloved. The first three titles were originally branded overseas under the "FINAL FANTASY LEGEND" moniker , and garnered critical acclaim for their complex yet compelling combat system.

    Romancing SaGa 2 takes the varied gameplay of other entries in the series and combines it with an open-ended free-form scenario system whose story is as vast as the world in which it plays out. The player takes the role of a succession of emperors, painting the history of the world with each and every action.

    Familiar series hallmarks such as formations and glimmers make a return in this unique title.

    Story

    It all begins with the song of a lone bard in a bustling pub.

    Great nations such as the Varennes Empire, which had once ensured peace throughout the world, stagnated and atrophied over the course of centuries, and sinister forces started emerging in outlying areas.

    Ere long, peace spiraled into war and the common folk spoke in hushed words of the Seven Heroeshistorical figures who saved the world once and who, it was hoped, would do so again.

    A lot of RPGs produce what can basically be described as "junk data." They pile numbers on top of numbers in order to present a dizzying array of statistics, but they always lead to the same result. In turn, the player never really learns anything. Romancing SaGa 2 is a title that deserves to be explored. This isn't just in the sense of visiting each town and opening every treasure chest. There is a variety of sub-systems and mechanics that are quite unlike the norm, and they are used to startling effect. At times, one can be left feeling a little lost, but that's part of what makes it work so well. They will pick and prod until the solution reveals itself. Every aspect of this game blends into one another quite nicely, creating an experience that any fan of the classic era is sure to appreciate.

    Romancing SaGa 2 actually was quite fun. At the very least, it was nice to see an older game re-emerge on a next generation console and still be more fun than a hindrance. It certainly contains some classic structure, some unique gameplay, tough-as-nails enemies and some linear restriction to keep it all grounded back in 1993.

    All in all, Romancing SaGa 2 is a decent RPG with some very interesting mechanics that were revolutionary for its time. There’s some issues here and there with the old style of game play where players aren’t told where to go or what to do. Then on top of all that, the game is not going to go easy on you. This one is for the fans of this style of game and for people looking for a bit of nostalgia. For those, you’ll find a finely crafted RPG with some interesting mechanics. At the same time, the price is a bit steep for a 25 year old game at this point. I would still wait for a slight sale.

    Romancing SaGa 2 is a solid JRPG that houses some good ideas and interesting mechanics. Sadly it just doesn’t quite suit the large screen due to over-sized text within screen hogging text boxes. The control system also has a slight delay when inputting commands, which can prove frustrating when it occurs during battle sequences or evasion.

    It’s curious to see how Romancing SaGa 2 feels so old but innovative at the same time. If we forgive certain clichés of the genre, it has some admirable mechanics. As a remaster it is very worthy.

    I was having a brilliant time with Romancing SaGa 2 before the glaring issues of the battle system came to light. Its non-linearity was ground breaking at the time and as a result, it certainly stands up even today. Even the soundtrack was hugely enjoyable. But those battle mechanics have ruined this game for me.

    No one asked for Romancing Saga 2, but Square Enix brings it to life instead of another more anticipated game. The controls, the price and a straight Smartphone port make us not recommend it.

    worth it and glad to play this game again. so much memories and nostalgia within this spin off game in the series.

    When Romancing SaGa 2 was first released back in 1993 it offered you certain mechanics that made the game stand out from the rest and in a wayWhen Romancing SaGa 2 was first released back in 1993 it offered you certain mechanics that made the game stand out from the rest and in a way some of these mechanics have aged pretty well. It does however have some flaws and these flaws do stop it from entering the higher echelons of JRPG’s. One thing that stands out straight away is the balance between challenging and fair of its gameplay and by doing this it means you don’t get frustrated all that often. In fact the only real frustration I had with the game came in the form of its controls. The controls just felt to fiddly at times and they didn’t always feel responsive which was a problem especially when involved in a battle. Speaking about the battles they’ve done a pretty good job here and I was very impressed by how many choices they allow you to make and this amount of freedom made the game very immersive. The enemies you face in battle though sadly lack in variety and this means facing them can become tedious at times, which is a shame because everything else stays fresh. If you like JRPG’s with decent story’s then you will no doubt enjoy the story in this game. They manage to keep things interesting throughout and this no doubt plays a part in making you want to carry on. I was however a little disappointed with the extra content that was included over the original and the main reason why I was disappointed was because none of the new content was memorable in the slightest, which is a shame. The presentation side of the game has definitely seen a lot of improvements over the original, especially when it came to the visuals. The visuals can look great at times and the added polish definitely makes the game worth playing again. At the end of the day Romancing SaGa 2 is a JRPG that pulls no punches and what you see is what you get. It might not be the best JRPG in the market but fans of the genre will definitely find something that will tickle their fancy here. If it had eliminated some of the annoying problems then you would have been talking about a classic, but having said that in the end it does just enough to get a recommendation from me.… Expand
