I'm glad i finally got around to playing this game! Far better than the first, which was very good itself. Is it Naughty Dog/Uncharted level? Not yet, but I'm real excited to see what they do with the next entry in the series now. Played it on Survival difficulty, wasn't really that hard, but the game was long enough to feel like I didnt waste my money.

Unlike some (more) open world games, you don't constantly do the same thing in Tomb Raider - or at least it does not feel like it. Whenever you go leave the main story trail and explore (hunting, scavenging, crafting, exploring), it has a genuine benefit to Lara or her gear and you find some really cool parts of the story. Side missions are well constructed and (unlike other games), Tomb Raider does not provide the player with generic, repetitive and always repeating side missions. Overall it's a fantastic single player experience that builds really well on the last game. The things that prevent me from giving it a 10/10 are the time trials and microtransactions - i don't think the game needs that at all and it would have been better to spend the time on an additional area that perhaps unlocks after completing the game. First game where getting XB1 make sense. Until now XB1 exclusives was really bad. OK, Tomb raider coming soon to other platforms, so not really exclusive but this one was really fun to play. If you liked last instance, this one is twice better. Better gameplay, better puzzles, not too easy, not too hard! A MUST PLAY GAME!!!

While Lara goes out to the Siberian mountains looking for the source of eternal life, she will face adversity in the most cinematographic way possible, with lots of explosions, land slides, risky jumps, difficult climbs, traps and shooting sequences against enemies and wild animals. Everything very well done and aggrandized by the beautiful environments and efficient characters and plot.
However, the game is not pyrotechnics from start to end, there's also some puzzles now and then to counterbalance to the action sequences and lots of optional explorations elements, being possible to return to previous scenarios to reach some spot not reachable before thanks to a new ability acquired. Among the stuff there's artifacts, chests containing weapons or part of them, recordings containing plot elements and even writings in russian or greek to improve Lara's language skills so she can decipher some clues to look for some itens; but the best extra are the hiding tombs, which are small dungeons with a puzzle, that once solved, allows Lara to reach some sort of altar to gain an extra ability.
It might sound good having so much to explore, but i think it ends being hard work to acquire all the stuff and particularly i didn't find that most of them are worth to get if you just want to reach the end of the story. It's not too important like getting a extra energy tank in Metroid for example. However, some people enjoy to collect all crap possible, so they may get pleased.
In conclusion, Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the best releases of 2015 in my opinion, much better than some called ''game of the year'' nominees like MGS V. Unfortunately, releasing it so close to Halo 5 and Fallout 4 was a bad move and it tends to be overlooked by lots of players.

It does deserve it. Story was branched off the first game and played into everything you experience, from Lara's video recordings or her still mentally afflicted by what happened. The whole quest of Rise of the Tomb Raider was a pleasant adventure.
Graphics were stunning, movie quality from the cinematic to the actually gameplay. Mechanics and controls worked well, only a few times did something go wrong but it was mostly my fault. Overall this game was a perfect Tomb Raider game and cant wait for the next one to come out.
Only negative thing I can think of; You didn't have dual pistols like Lara used at the end of the first game.

Amazing textures, lighting and gameplay. Every little detail draws me into Lara's world. The way she fumbles up a cliff, the way she drains water from her loose hair and shakes off, and the way snowflakes land on her eye brows. Every minor detail is very much appreciated. I don't think that the visuals are ground breaking and so far the story telling is trite at best. Both of these issues are really too bad as the last entry to this game was excellent with both.

If I had to simply sum up the game it would be, "remember the last game? Good because you will be doing exactly the same thing in almost the exact same locations at the same pace as the last game with a slightly less compelling story.

The one thing that is being pond off as this cool new feature is the "natives" have tasks for you. While completing them gives you more to do and helps you level up I think you could get away with not doing them, but honestly why wouldn't you. This is after all a Tomb Raider game and helping out put you in a position to explore.

Why can't I just buy the core game for $20?

What if after the core game, I am good, and don't need/want any additional content. What is the worth of the DLCs and others that I will not play? As a PS4 consumer, I don't have the option to just have the core game and decide later if I would like additional content. Why make it a bundle, just to justify the $60 price tag.

    Cons:
Still far too many QTEs for a AAA game....this game is better than this....the devs have shown they are better than this and it ruins the immersion and flow of the gameplay.

The game wants to be an action-stealth game, except that it doesn't give you many ways to play stealth....you cannot purposely crouch...and once you are in range or out of cover for 1 sec, you cannot hide as every NPC knows your exact location from then on.....unforgivable oversight in this type of game....even Ubi finally fixed AC.

...and just nitpicking, but too many Achievements in this game, many of which are just spamming...focus CD, focus.

    Pros:
Story is really good and the pacing is phenomenal.

Sidequests are all in keeping with the immersion.....there are no, pick 5 flowers for no reason...scrape this frying pan for, well no reason....not only are they on point, they offer really good rewards.

Tomb puzzle solving, while not immensely challenging, are light years ahead of what we got last time.....and the rewards are fantastic....great job....very great job.

Leveling is well paced and the most of the skills are actually meaningful.....which is in stark contrast to almost every game I have played this year.

    Rise of The Tomb Raider
    A Step Back From Greatness
Tomb Raider 2013 is one of my most favorite games ever.. Needless to say I was excited to play the sequel..
Unfortunately, they dropped the gritty tone of the original to chase uncharted….
Lara sets out to uncover a mystery her father was mocked for..
This game starts out in the Serbian mountains and the majority of the game keeps you in the snow covered mountains…
And of course there are bad guys after the same artifact you are..
    So youre not alone…
The tomb raider reboot introduced a crafting system which has been brought back, but this time feels much more in the background..
You can gather items and hunt animals for materials to craft bandages and upgrade your weapons…
But none of this is forced…
And much like the past game you upgrade your weapons at a campfire, which also acts as a fast travel point and a place for you to spend your skill points as you level up…
Rise of the tomb raider feels much more linear this time around..
The world doesn’t really feel as connected as the original…
Its for the most part a linear path that you traverse with climbing aces and ropes..
The game feels much more like assassins creed this time around because of this…
It gives uncharted 4 a run for its money with how much climbing you actually do here…
As well as the series as a whole during the few epic chase sequences qhich are easily some of my favorite moments in the entire game…
When you aren’t climbing there are a few openish sections you can explore but the mistake the original made is back as well with secrets being locked off until you progress further in the story to unlock the needed tool and come back...
This is a cheap tactic to prolong gameplay hours…
but more so its frustrating and ironically discourages exploration…
Why look around when 1 in 2 areas is going to tell me to come back later?
I might as well just ignore everything and run forward..
This is what I ended up doing..
Fortunately rise of the tomb raider is gorgeous, and traversing the parquor sections and solving environmental puzzles old fans will be happy to see returned outside of just being secrets is a great deal of fun…
And the 3rd person shooter combat feels decently nice, its not uncharted good, but its passable.. you have the option to stealth or shoot your way through most sections… you can also dodge attacks and counter….
The puzzle pieces are all here for this to be a masterpiece of a game…
except theyre missing the center piece… the one thing that makes all of this come together and work for uncharted in such a beautiful way…
    And that’s character…
Theres not a single well written character in this entire game…
    This includes lara…
The original this wasn’t so.. the game felt so real and you felt so vulnerable.. not only having to survive enemies but the environment.. I cared the entire way.. here however youre just a girl Nathan drake with 0 personality…
Which ultimately makes this feel like just a generic third person shooter experience…
There was no reason to stray away from the unique gritty adventure they had going on with tomb raider 2013, but they did and the feel of the game suffered for it
And Im not sure if this story was game of thrones inspired, but it felt pretty copy and paste making every turn so predictable, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if again the characters had character, but they didn’t.. I wasn’t invested in the story at all…
The PS4 20 year celebration version also comes with all of the dlc…
Endurance which can be played either single or co op where youre tasked with surviving by eating food and gathering resources.. Very fun idea, but the challenges for the trophies wont unlock unless they are an active challenge, which if youre trophy hunting kills all reason to continue if there are no more trophy related challenges to do…
cold darkness which is a stealth zombie dlc where you have to infiltrate a research base for a chemical weapon
as well as Baba Yaga and Blood ties which ill be reviewing on their own as they are each about an hour long expansion with their own stories..
While I do wish the characters were better written in Rise of The Tomb Raider, I still feel is a quality experience, well worth your money if youre a fan of action adventure…
I Give Rise of The Tomb Raider..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final boss fight was incredibly irritating. I am so tired of game designers having such little imagination that the only thing they can come up with is to take away all weapons and fight a boss with grenades and a fricking machine gun. Lara can't even fight him hand to hand but has to make grenades for God's sake. it's OK to be able to manufacture grenades but she can't have a gun. Annoying to say the least. The entire thing just pissed me off. The rest of it was a re-hash of plots and puzzles I have seen many times before in other games. Expand

The several technical limitations of the xbox one console take a toll on this game. The game itself is really well done and, despite not having an old school tomb raider feel, it's a proper successor to the 2013 reboot.
As I said, the only downside is due to the console poor performance and not the game's fault.

I really enjoyed this game , great exploring capacity and the combat is just amazing . The hiding in bushes and the bottle distractions provide good stealth opportunities . The landscaping is amazing and the Tombs are also excellent . This game really provides us with a marvelous journey . I do not regret buying this game at all !

You will also enjoy the opportunity to play the game on 60FPS. A classic for PC players, but not so obvious for consolists. I played the game on Xbox One X, where you can play with better visuals, but 30FPS or worse with 60FPS. I (like most) prefer worse graphics, but smoothness in the form of 60FPS, so I welcomed this change and it improved my gaming experience. I mainly praise the graphics and the possibility of choosing FPS on consoles, but the story has also changed and in my opinion for the better. The plot is much better with better characters and those locations have also undergone a change and it cannot be said that they are bad. The locations are beautiful and in addition to the main storyline, you have slightly more open places here and there, where you can do various side activities, thanks to which you can, for example, improve Lara. The improvements were already in the last part, but there is perhaps even better. In short, Tomb Raider from 2015 takes all the good that the one from 2013 offered us, but still takes it to a completely different level. Great game that I recommend. Expand

As for the puzzles, they're awesome, every puzzle is creative, fun, and very unique, all in all very enjoyable.

The side content is more than enough, the game is overall very complete and there are many things you can do. Exploration is one of the game's strongest points, there's a good amount of side quests to do, tombs to raid, secrets to uncover and collectibles to find.

What didn't really surprise me is the overall story. It's very similar to the first game in some ways but it's not as dark, and the writing is straight up weak, predictable plot twists and characters making questionable decisions, it's unfortunate how even this game suffers from this issue.

Last but not least, this is my favorite version of Lara Croft, I think she looks the best in this game, and she's very likeable.
This is my favorite Tomb Raider game.

Final Rating: "Very Good" ~ 7.5/10.

It features a Lara Croft that is a few steps closer to being the character we've all come to know and love. And just like the gritty reboot, it is an 'M' rated game complete with F-bombs and occasional spurts of bloody violence. In this installment, Lady Croft is on the search for a mythic "Holy Grail"-type object which is also being sought out by an evil paramilitary organization. It's the type of plot that would be right at home in an Indiana Jones movie. The gameplay is the same as before, but everything has been expanded upon. There are more tombs to explore and puzzles to solve as well as weapons and useful items to discover. Additionally, developer Crystal Dynamics has made this TR even more cinematic with over-the-top scripted events that are reminiscent of those featured in "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves".

Beyond the excellent 20+ hour campaign is "Expeditions", an arcade-style spin on each level that players can modify to make them more challenging or just easier with RPG-like cards. The RPG cards can be purchased with real money or with in-game earned currency. There are no multiplayer modes to speak of, but Expeditions definitely makes up for it. You can also tackle user-created Expeditions and even create your own which you can share online. There's also a season pass that you can purchase, but the great thing of "Rise" is that it really feels like a full game. Visually, the game is gorgeous with little screen tear to speak of. Framerate issues are also virtually non-existent with an almost constant 30 FPS on display.

"Rise of the Tomb Raider" is an improvement over "Tomb Raider". It ranks up with "Batman: Arkham Knight", "The Witcher 3" and "Metal Gear Solid V" as one of the best action-adventure game of 2015. So it naturally is a must have for XBOX ONE owners. 9.2 out of 10.

The only time stuff is happening are those only-happens-once action sequences and occasional enemy soldiers chatting.

Two, it loses replay value. Once you get all the challenges, collectibles, and gear upgrades, there really is nothing else to do. Oh there are side missions, but they all utilizes the basic mechanics of the game such as track something down, hunt animals, shoot something, etc. Since it lacks "do whatever you want" style like GTA 5, the only thing left to do is starting a new game, and begin the cycle all over again.

    Story

The story in ROTTR is full of exciting nerve racking moments, and strips back a lot of the supernatural elements that were in the 2013 game which is welcome. Lara is further developed as a character, with her relationship with her father being front and center, and the villains of trinity are interesting characters with motives that are not clearly black and white.

    Gameplay

The gameplay is superb in ROTTR and the way i had to switch between weapons for different situations makes the combat interesting and the upgrading and resource scavenging makes the combat feel fresh, and the collectibles offer cool insight into the history of the location and further advances the story, and characters. The tombs are also further expanded and offer up great moments, and puzzles to be solved.

    Graphics/Presentation

The graphics in the game are gorgeous and the locales are varied, and on top of that the game runs smooth, as i did not experience any slowdowns during my play-through.

The game is currently on amazon for about £30 and at that price its a steal. Well worth buying. Expand

Amazing story, amazing graphics. There is plenty of side stuff to do to keep you busy. The game is just incredible and i'd even go as far as saying it is better than the first one. I've been playing tomb raider since the original came out, and i tell ya, i couldn't be more pleased with this game.

You can change outfits unlike the 2013. The outfits look amazing, there's not one that I don't like. The tombs are amazing because they are all unique. The environments are one of the best I have saw in a game, and it's a awesome location (Siberia). The enemies are interesting since they have a cool story. The weapons are all really cool. The skills system has many skills where you'll be lucky if you get them before the end of the story. There are so many collectibles that they are very over whelming. The dlcs are really good, and so are the dlc outfits, especially the apex predator one. The character movement is the best I saw in a game, the animations are great to. There are tons of tools to use, one of my favorites are the arrows where you can shoot them in the wall and climb with them. The stealth mechanic is great because there are many ways to take out your enemies, the executions are brilliant. The characters are good but some could be better. Hunting is cool since they added amazing animals. The survival experience is amazing since it feels like you actually are there trying to survive. The aren't any bad things I could say about this game, that's why I gave it a 10. Expand

Against all odds, Rise of the Tomb Raider fully realizes the promise of its predecessor and then some with a bigger world to explore and even tighter gameplay.

The game's massive variety, from its modifiable weaponry to its beautifully diverse terrain offers players the very best toolbox to explore a gorgeously rendered Siberia. There are better – if not harder – shooters than Rise of the Tomb Raider, but few match the suspense that its stealth encounters and enemies provide.

Camilla Luddington reprises her role as a tough-as-nails Ms. Croft with impossible class – something that makes up for the paper-thin characters that make up the game's supporting cast. Fans of the franchise's mystery arcs won't find much to mull over about Lara's morose daddy issues, but the members of Trinity provide enough menace to be more than just a plot device.

Rise of the Tomb Raider surpasses every benchmark it sets for itself before setting a new one, even if its cliffhanger ending may leave Crystal Dynamics' third entry with a lot to answer for. It's bigger, it's better, it's more fun, but Rise of the Tomb Raider may not know where it really wants to go next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nuestra inmortal Lara Croft.

This game is one of the best looking game on Xbox One that I've played. When walking up the mountain, the sunlight shining, the snow creating tracks underneath Lara’s feet, it was astounding. The mechanics and the engine that run this game are breathtaking. But this game isn’t just pretty (like Lara Croft), it’s a beast.

Let’s start with the 2013 reboot. I got the reboot for free and I though “eh, why not”. I loved it, but to an extent. I knew there was room for improvement. I only hoped that it could be done. With Rise, I have never felt like I got a better bang for the buck.

Now the campaign. Though it didn’t tie directly with the story from the 2013 reboot, Rise had not only an intuitive and intriguing story, but it made connections with characters. Plot twists and villains made me squirm and yell “NO” at my TV. This game truly brought me on the adventure with Lara Croft. It isn’t as gritty as the first game’s story and doesn't focus on Lara's development from naive to experienced, but it hones in on the mission and exploration at hand while Lara struggles to survive. All of this while giving us that survival instinct of Lara Croft we all know and love. The tombs are also a HUGE upgrade from the last game. The 2013 game did not have much difficulty and innovation. Rise created gorgeous sets that were incredibly satisfying when completing. The campaign is one of the most enjoyable I found this year.

After the campaign, the question is if the game can continue on, or will it die like a lot of others do in this genre? The answer is simple. It wouldn’t be favorite game of 2015. You not only can replay missions, but also try to beat your scores in Score Attack. Also, players can replay missions in Elite mode. This allows the Lara to use the gear she currently has in any level. This is hilarious because I love replaying earlier levels with fully upgraded still trees because I just annihilate everyone.

Now, a lot of people overreact when hearing "microtransactions". Chill. In Rise, coins are earned for completing challenges. These coins can buy card packs. These cards are not an annoying nuisance or a requirement, but can be used OPTIONALLY to modify games. They can buff or weaken Lara and the same for enemies. These cards are fun because, based on their effect, they give percentage boosts or subtractions from your score. Your score, in any mode, is recorded on a leaderboard and you can compare with your friends and the world. Again, these microtransactions are NOT required. They just do fancy things. Not necessary.

The other microtransactions? Normally I hate DLC because I think all of the game should be included from release (*cough* Destiny). However, Rise’s DLC is worth every cent. With the first DLC, you can play in Endurance mode, where Lara tries to survive in the Siberian Wilderness and it is up to the player to gather resources, food, and stay warm. This always gives me such a rush when I am playing it. While trying to unearth artifacts, the player needs to keep hunting and looking for shelter to stay alive. Definitely a fantastic addition to the game and it provides endless fun.

The second DLC is Baba Yaga. This extends the story and offers a short, but immersive quest line. Lara embarks on an adventure into the Wicked Vale, where she is exposed to a toxin that causes intense hallucinations. She faces Baba Yaga, the witch of legend and myth. The player must go along this journey with Lara to find the source of the aerial hallucinogen. I loved this DLC and the story kept me going. The hallucinations added in new types of enemies and it made the game looked like it was being played through an Instagram filter. It also brought a bit of Lara’s past as she started seeing visions of her father and past.

The third is Cold Darkness Awakened, which involves infected Soviet Soldiers and Lara having to infiltrate the base to shut down the chemical causing the infection. This DLC is insane. The ominous music and the cues when the infected soldiers start swarming is definitely something terrifying and kept my adrenaline pumping.

If you couldn't tell, I LOVED ROTTR. This is the first game where I decided to 100% complete and also the first game I instantly bought the season pass for. I got access to everything Rise related and I have not been happier on any DLC.

Now what about other games? The reason this game was my #1 game of 2015 was because games like Fallout 4 and Witcher III just lacked that true "wow" factor Rise gave me. Sure those games were phenomenal (I'm not taking anything away from them), but Rise told a better story and was much more compelling to play. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. There were no scenes where I got bored and the action was always coming at me. I've beaten the story 3 times now and I'd do it again. 5 months later and I still play it.*

*This is my opinion. You are free to think differently

Bulgarian titles in Siberia just killed me. Developers simply don't respect the players thinking we swallow anything they make. Well, I guess all these "10/10 MASTERPISS" say that many people do.
Plot is also on a weak dogebola level written by a "writer" Pratchett.

As an old Tomb Raider I/II/III fan who had lost interest I love that the franchise has surged back to life in a way that does justice and sticks to its roots, while being everything you expect a triple-A 2016 blockbuster game to be. Keep it up Crystal Dynamics!

One note though, after reading familiar thoughts from others: The game's opening sequence is indeed just so epic and gripping that once you get into the meat of the actual game itself it is guaranteed to lose pace for a bit.

I think the previous game paced itself better in that the movie-like sequences emerged from the game and built up and up to the end, rather than starting huge and then settling into the game. This is a minor gripe though, it's still a must play.

As someone who owns both a PS4 and Xbox One, I will say that this game being a timed exclusive does leave a sour taste in my mouth. While I encourage PS4 users to pick this game up at some point (especially since you're getting all the DLCs), I can't argue against many who are boycotting it purely because of the timed exclusivity.

A great experience that is let down by its voice acting and certain key junctures in the story when the developers just tell us so much that we can guess what's going to happen next. The good news is that these are few and far between and the spectacular final missions make up for everything.
