Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great game, but its not a true Tomb Raider game - it feels more the answer of Uncharted competition. As a fan of the original Tomb Raider, it seems the developers have lost their way into a more crowd pleasing title rather than sticking to the game that led the field. If this game were called something else and Lara a different character I would score it a 10. But because they use the Tomb Raider name, in what is an action packed and at times shoot em up my score is less. Lara was an explorer of Tombs, rather than shooting enemies with sawn off shot guns and placing climbing axes in enemies skulls. The story is about Lara finding peace from her fathers demise, but the story looses focus as she ends up mass killing waves of enemies in brutal fashion. The Tombs are optional, in my mind the Tombs are what the game was always about at heart - working out intricate puzzles to move forward and feeling some sense of satisfaction of working out the logical solutions, discovering ancient mysteries. In all, a great game which is mainly benefiting from Tomb Raider marketing - but not a true Tomb Raider game, a title to please the masses rather than the fans. Expand

Fantastic game. Much better than the 2013 version. BUT it's still missing that tomb raider feeling. Lack of "figure a way out of this area to move on" is clearly missing still. Also there are no where near enough tombs. 9 is not enough an neither is 12! Hint hint. But in general the games fab. And it's even better that the multiplayer was scraped. Well done.

They've built up Lara well as a character, she's coming into her own more with this game. The controls are fine, but sometimes Lara moves on her own without the player's input or does something unexpected. Kind of like the newer assassin's creed games where you feel like more of a passenger than taking an active role in things.

The challenge tombs have been great, I've completed 7 out of 9 and can easily say it's the best part of the game. If you're going to get this, play the optional tombs. Can't stress that enough Crystal Dynamics has done some really good level design here. If Tomb Raider 3 comes out at some point it will be interesting to see where they go next (hopefully more Tombs and less combat).

Overall, if you liked the first Tomb Raider reboot this is more of that. It's a good game but short lived and not the best thing out there. But for a quick, fast paced romp that doesn't outstay its welcome this fits the bill!

I don't think that the visuals are ground breaking and so far the story telling is trite at best. Both of these issues are really too bad as the last entry to this game was excellent with both.

If I had to simply sum up the game it would be, "remember the last game? Good because you will be doing exactly the same thing in almost the exact same locations at the same pace as the last game with a slightly less compelling story.

The one thing that is being pond off as this cool new feature is the "natives" have tasks for you. While completing them gives you more to do and helps you level up I think you could get away with not doing them, but honestly why wouldn't you. This is after all a Tomb Raider game and helping out put you in a position to explore.

The several technical limitations of the xbox one console take a toll on this game. The game itself is really well done and, despite not having an old school tomb raider feel, it's a proper successor to the 2013 reboot.
As I said, the only downside is due to the console poor performance and not the game's fault.

The only time stuff is happening are those only-happens-once action sequences and occasional enemy soldiers chatting.

Two, it loses replay value. Once you get all the challenges, collectibles, and gear upgrades, there really is nothing else to do. Oh there are side missions, but they all utilizes the basic mechanics of the game such as track something down, hunt animals, shoot something, etc. Since it lacks "do whatever you want" style like GTA 5, the only thing left to do is starting a new game, and begin the cycle all over again.

Lara moves and silent kills are the same. Some parts are really challenging, but we get deja vu to often. Obviously the game looks amazing and I really liked small things like when Lara makes her ponytail perfect after swimming, but it's not the point. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nuestra inmortal Lara Croft.

Gameplay wise, this game is definitely my preferred one. There's less combat, which I like. The combat in general is also better, with some new additions like a bigger variety of weapons as well as different ammo types for most of them. There's a lot more exploration and puzzle solving this time, both mandatory and optional. The game is also a lot more open ended this time, you can do side quests, explore bigger areas and there are incentives for revisiting places you already explored before with new abilities. Where it lacks I think is the story. It's not very good. It's not horrible or anything but I was more interested in the first game's story, as generic as it was. I don't think most people play these games for the story though. Personally, I'm much much more focused on gameplay and I think there's some significant improvement here over the original. Not to mention, the graphics are absolutely stunning. I'm very excited to play the last entry of the trilogy.
I beat this game in March of 2020.

A great experience that is let down by its voice acting and certain key junctures in the story when the developers just tell us so much that we can guess what's going to happen next. The good news is that these are few and far between and the spectacular final missions make up for everything.
