Red Death is a solid pick-up-and-play arcade shooter but one that you likely won't go back to after giving it a handful of attempts.

Red Death on Xbox One is a chore to play. I would say that the ugly visuals and mediocre gameplay bring down the experience, but that would mean there was something enjoyable to be brought down.

Red Death is a 2D 8Bit Bullet-Hell Shmup. You play as Red-001 a Pilot. Weird things are going on, and it's better to see it with your ownRed Death is a 2D 8Bit Bullet-Hell Shmup. You play as Red-001 a Pilot. Weird things are going on, and it's better to see it with your own eyes. As you fly forward, you are faced with an onslaught of the standard enemies, Flying Eyes, Skulls that fire insane amounts of bullets, and tentacles that trash across the screen. The low color pallet makes it hard to distinguish items from enemies and bullets, but you become accustomed to it fairly fast. The enemies drop stars and powerups. the stars are "Chips" and add to your score, as well as unlock you an achievement. The amount of obstacles on your screen varies from easily managed to nearly impossible to navigate and can change quite quickly. There aren't checkpoints, so death means starting from the beginning. The [S] powerup is self-proclaimed as a shield, but it gives you an extra life. You respawn and drop a power-up if you have any stock of these when you take damage, but if you have none left death is game over. Red Death doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's low budget graphics doesn't detract from the fun or challenge. The only audio option is to mute the game, you can't change any volume settings within the game. If you enjoy dodging insane amounts of on-screen hazards and wreaking havoc on an onslaught of non-stop enemies, then check this game out, it packs a punch for its price! Expand
