Entertaining game in parts but way too much time spent travelling between locations. Looks great but last one was more fun.

This game is VERY nice. I spent many hours on half of the story and then stopped to free roam on chapter 4. This is awesome. You can play how you want. The wildlife is rich and the off-story challenges are fun to complete. The game runs smoothly on my Xbox One X. I love the singleplayer part. Perfect in my eyes.

It's a great game but not perfect. The visuals are incredible and the game is overall amazing but sadly every once in a while you run into some mechanic in the game that really pulls you out of the game.

Visually superb (except cutscenes), good (not amazing) characters/writing, great music but this game isn't 97/100
I'm 25 hours in (chapter 4) and so far:
    - too much horse (~ half of the game is about riding your horse from A to B... really?!) not allergic to it but that's simply too much - slow animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions) and slow

    - slow animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions) and slow pace in general. Interesting bet but doesn't really trigger anything outside of frustration and boredom.
    - game forces you to play the good guy - rewards you by doing so (discounts in shops, no bounty hunters to harass you - which is a good thing as most of them are magical bounty hunters with teleporting abilities) and punishes you if you don't; go make $100 with robbing a train and you'll get a $200 bounty. You can pay it or go to jail for 2 minutes to repay those $200 (and the killing 17 persons). Reality simulation often has its limits.
    - clumsy controls (the wheel thing.. misleading tutorials etc) and frequent collision glitches (horse+tree... horse+rock... horse+dude walking on the street etc). Very 2008.
    - gang life: you do 95% of the heavylifting for a gang of 20 persons.. wtf. Don't get the point of buying camp upgrades and/or give more money. After 20+ hours of gameplay you don't really get WHY you're doing all this for them
    - it's not original. if you played RDR1 and Far Cry 4 or 5 you won't be lost to say the least.. Not really a pb if it's your first Rockstar game. It's the more Rockstar game ever made.
    - most importantly this game isn't super fun to play which imho is the biggest pb here. It's Far Cry/GTA funny maybe 50% of the time.. the rest is frustration of horse riding, reloading some checkpoint and retry some (very scripted) mission, chores, taking your stuff before leaving your horse etc RDR1 was more fun. GTA5 (campaign) is more fun.

It remains interesting to play and enjoyable overall but 7 ouf of 10 it is. Not 10.
A fun online experience may bump it to 8.

The game is so big and detailed you'll always see or experience something when roaming around. The countless random encounters you'll stumble upon make it interesting. The missions themselves are not too hard and are often quite interesting.

To be short if you like a good RPG I can really recommend this game to you.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a beautiful looking game, supported by clunky controls and a slow paced story that will ultimately not keep you playing.

It looks absolutely amazing in the GFX department and the sound direction is almost flawless but again the chunkiness let's it all down. 4/10

The following day I played a bit more and just got bored of it. After 12 hours of gameplay I was certain I was done with this game and was I very dissapointed with it, I was telling people that it wasn't worth it and that it was boring. Well the following Monday I gave it another chance, I played a few hours and something just clicked. I realized that everything in this game is amazing (characters, story telling, setting), and the story just kept pulling me back in. Before I knew it I was almost done with the game and I was having a blast with it. I finally completed it and now I understand why all these critics are praising this game. You really have to devote your time to get into this game. It's not a game that you can pick up for 20 minutes at a time and enjoy it. I have never played a game with an amazing story like this. As much as I love this game it still has some downfalls. On my play through I encountered many bugs that ruined missions, and as some others have pointed out some missions are very linear and you cannot complete many missions how you want to. I would always try to run around the enemy to flank them, only to have my companions die or have the mission ended because I was too far from my companions or the area i was suppose to be in. The controls and the speed of the game do take some time to get use to. Before playing this game I completed The Legend of Zelda: BOTW for the second time, and have been playing a lot of BO4, so It was kind of hard to get into this game. At first it felt very slow and clunky but you get use to it. The positives of this game greatly outweigh the negatives, so do not worry too much about the negatives. This game is really something else and I am glad I gave it another chance. You really cannot go wrong by purchasing this game. Just remember it may take some time to get use to the pace of this game but it is well worth it. All in all this game is amazing!! Expand

Controller mapping so watered down that there are multiple actions linked to a single button depending on what you are doing at the time or standing next to. Don't worry, you don't need to bother remembering them, they know it's rubbish so there are HUD elements all over the place to remind you which buttons do what.

I never knew there were so many tattle tales in the late 1800's. I can't even shoot my gun into the air in jubilation without it being considered assault... I clear out a gang hideout, someone was able to get away and run crying to the sheriff, that's right, a criminal ran to the sheriff when things went bad for him. It only took the sheriff and a posse 30 seconds to show up and kill me. Might as well just add stars like GTA with cowboys rappelling out of choppers they arrive on the scene so fast. I respawn in the forest to find I have a $50 bounty constantly nagging at me as it takes over the map's cursor icon. Did people actually talk so damn much back then? Everyone has SOO much to say it just comes off as regurgitated story filler. Can they please shut up, or do I really just have to kill them to end the mind numbing back stories each NPC demands the need to share?

This "game" is hyper-reality overload, in all the bad ways. It's apparent they took so long on this game because it's absolutely full of unwanted features and bloat, which do not add anything of value in my eyes, but only retract from what would have been an amazing experience. I feel like I just took on a second job I have to slog through.

Why is it so hard to get excited to play this game?

The gameplay feels a little clunky at first but after a couple hours into the game you will get a hang of the controls and it becomes extremely rewarding, seamlessly blending in a mix of the dive button, sliding into cover, duel weilding revolvers and fantastic execution animations that trigger when youre grappling or close to an enemy. The horse bonding and controls are the best thats ever been seen in a video game...but what truly makes this game stand out are the characters and the gang. Rockstar has created a game rich with compelling and complex characters that go through incredible amounts of character development over the course of the nearly 60+ hour story mode. Micah Bell is the King Geoffrey if videogames, you love to hate him. Suprisingly Arthur Morgan is one of my favorite video game characters ever. right up there with the likes of Joel and Ellie from the last of us and Kratos and Atreus from God of War. Now the story does start very slow and one of the last chapters becomes a very slow and tedious grind but its one i didnt mind because i enjoyed the characters and story so much (some gamers will find it annoying though). Overall this game is without a doubt, one of the greatest video games ever made and rockstar deserves to be applauded for their efforts. Every gamer needs to experience this game. I give it an easy 10/10. Expand

The game is a cross between a good movie, a good book and a great story set in the most gorgeous and vibrant world surpassing the prasied graphics of The Witcher 3. I can't say enough about how much they have put into this game, even setting up for what's next to come after the main story is complete.... I am hesitant to revisit the game from the beginning again having just completed around 60+ hours only because i want to play it again when it comes out on PC to see how much more beautiful it looks on full system specs. They have a few glitches to sort out but they are basic and unfortunately it takes a little away from the immersion but that only means it will get better before you play it if you haven't already as they iron out those bugs.
You cannot avoid this game, the fact that this is more than one persons "best game ever" means that it has the potential to be yours. Wow, just Wow. Go into this game with an open mind and prepared to enter a world, not just complete a game, it is and amazing and "alive" world.
Do yourself a favour and play it on the best possible system you can (XBOX One X or PS4 pro) to really bring out those graphics. I am just blown away and missing the world already.

As a Rockstar Gamer since GTA2, I have played every one. Each one has made graphical and gameplay enhancements since its last addition. While RDR2 does have an amazing graphic quality on Console, it does have its flaws. The gameplay is stretched when you are riding around on a horse. It is not an instant gratification game, it does take a person who can immerse themselves to truely enjoy this game. There are clipping bugs and collision bugs when riding around in cinematic view. The gunplay is a little clunky and that is due to the auto aim. The camera views make it very difficult to play free aim with no assist. The characters and NPCS in world notice what you do and react to what you do. This is a blessing and a curse. It forces you to try to play the hero, when maybe you would just like to play full bandit. When full bandit and your meter is red, shop owners will and can refuse to sell to you. This is something that needs to be worked out, but values your choices and path you take. The cutscenes and story is something of a blessing. New gamers hate it, as they only want multiplayer. Older gamers praise it, as we know that multiplayer has dominated gaming. The age of a fully developed game sold for $60 with an amazing story and minimal bugs are over. But RDR2 and Rockstar have done their best to go back to that nostalgia. Overall the game is not without its issues, but is one of the best games of the generation.

Rockstar Games has done it again. Red Dead Redemption II isn't the next GTA like many people think. It's a whole different ballpark one that Rockstar has almost mastered.

The beginning is a little slow but after you start picking up the pace in Chapter 2 it almost hurts to have to put the controller down (I mean like seriously YOU CAN INTERACT WITH ANYONE IN THE GAME HOW CRAZY IS THAT)

The beginning is a little slow but after you start picking up the pace in Chapter 2 it almost hurts to have to put the controller down (I mean like seriously YOU CAN INTERACT WITH ANYONE IN THE GAME HOW CRAZY IS THAT) Two complaints I have are that general movement especially horse movement is clunky (I can't tell you how many times my horse just flops and I have to walk miles to buy a Horse reviver before it dies on me) and on the base consoles (Ps4/Ps4 Slim, Xbone/Xbone S) graphics are a bit blurry. Gameplay also does rarely gets repetitive at times (Mostly when you have to ride miles to get to a quest)

Def a buy, def a game of a year but there are just some kinks that prevent me from giving it a 10 it's more like a 9.5/9.7

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good:
    1. It looks nice I suppose though its not better than any other AAA open world game I've played in recent years
    2. Collecting Bounties are fun but they are just a fetch quest.
    3. The cores system combined with the food is nice however it quickly became apparent that it was better to manage it through tonics and just eat to keep at the right weight.
    The Bad
    1. The story. i'm almost done with chapter 2, so far i dislike the people the game has me interact with and i'm already hoping the gang fails. I dread going to that stupid camp full of horrible people asking you to do there work for them
    2. The combat. Boring cover based shooter but without proper aiming, think a less imaginative gears of war one
    3. The World. Empty and not in a good way. In a why does every town feel like there's no one there way. There's just a few people to sell you stuff and normally one person just saying or shouting the same few sentences over and over again and as there is only life in the towns you hear it a lot
    4. Riding my horse around to get to somewhere has quickly become the most boring thing i have done in a game. I'm not a fan of holding A for 20 mins for 5 mins of game play the another 20 mins of holding A to get back to civilisation and any thing to do, its just boring
    5. No reward for exploration, I've spent about five hours riding around exploring the world and my main memory of it was just sitting there holding A for hours with nothing much to do there are some people in the world that wanted help but that quickly became repetitive and boring again.
    6. I don't like playing the bad guy, i thought you where actually going to be seeking redemption like in Red Dead Redemption 1" this leads to many thing that I see as options being completely ignored because i have no interest in them, also my character isn't very nice. I find it hard to play a game where I dislike the person I play as.
    7. Nothing ever really gets explained properly. For instance in Chapter two there as a quest to get a legendary bear. you can chose to go after it or leave it( The games way of telling you that pictures of animals on the map are locations where you can find legendary ones). I want after it killed it then chucked it on my horse and spent 20 mins holding A to get back to town to sell it for some major money to find that no one wanted it. OK I thought to camp it must be a crafting thing. Lets hold A and go there. Nope no one hear wants it, by this point i'm starting to think it just a game object and doesn't have a use so i look online find there's a trapper that can be found in 3 different locations. the next 3 hours is spent holding A looking for him. That's just not fun game-play for me

    Other Issues

There where a few glitches but I expect that. Mirrors went crazy at one point. Game objects kept going black at certain angles.

You can climb up but as far as I can tell you cant climb down leading to some annoying deaths

I think you're meant to bond with your horse but they have stats so there treated like changeable parts and as soon as I find a better one I swap. Give me a horse close to the beginning that has the potential to be one of the best horses in the game if i stick with it then I might care but until I find one that's maxed out whats the point i'm going to sell it as soon as i find a better one

You may find different but i just find it a bit boring. It has the sense of a tech demo to it, arr look how big and beautiful our world is with it's "immersive" animations and story telling.

    Hopes

Online. its all its got left, I hope it plays like a full on MMO with character creation, fast travel, ability to join the law or a gang, you're own camp with people you recruit rather than that horrible dutch guy and his mates. I was looking for a full on single player game that I could spend hours doing stuff in. I got a sparsely populated horse riding simulator with an arcade combat system and I'm now hoping for a full online game because unfortunately there attempts at a single player experience haven't really worked. At least not for me. It feels like an really badly written 80 hour cowboy movie where all the extra time is spent just watching one silent person sit on a horse and ride around

Alright, so I honestly decided to make this account just to review this game. Let's try to make this as concise and critical as possible.

First thing's first, I'd like to back up my opinion on this game by stating three facts.

    A. I have completed the first Red Dead Redemption.
    B. I have completed this game, Red Dead Redemption 2, as well.
    C. I am not a Rockstar fanboy. In fact, I have now only finished three of their games. Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Grand Theft Auto V.

With that being said, onto the review.

This game is absolutely perfect for me as a player. Obviously there are gripes people have, but those gripes don't necessarily reflect as a bad thing for me when it comes to how I play the game.

Yes it is clunky, but I enjoy the weighty feel of my character moving and interacting with the world. You also get used to the controls pretty fast as well. As for the immersion and survival elements, I am entirely okay with them as I am big into survival games already.

The big thing with this game is that is has absolutely an absolutely superb story that nearly moved me to tears three separate times over the course of ten minutes. The characters are layered and actually evolve as the game continues, whilst also staying consistent to how they would act. This story has to be, without a doubt, the best video game story on the market right now.

The sound design is another big plus. The music system they programmed to create tracks on the fly is nothing less than impressive, and the general design and feel of the sounds you hear throughout the gameplay keeps you immersed throughout the entire experience.

Finally, the graphics are fantastic for three separate but equal reasons: character models, lighting, and facial animations. Everything about these three specific things are executed masterfully.

I personally think the definition of a perfect game is something that does exactly what it set out to do and this game passed that definition with flying colors. It is a must play.

The rare moments of actual action, or even basic navigation, yield controls that feel mawkish and awkward, even compared to the game's 8 year old predecessor., and light years behind the standards set in current AAA tittles, giving you the feeling that even getting to the sweet spots of the game won't be fun. Add to that a system of "cores" and stats that seem far overcomplicated, especially for this type of an action game.

I'm left giving up after 5 or 6 hours, not from any frustration but with the overwhelming sense that this is not an enjoyable activity, while RDR1 was ridiculously fun to play.

One is left with the feeling that Rockstar was overwhelming intoxicated with their great artistic vision, and somewhat condescending to gamers that they should sit back and enjoy their incredible tale. Truth be told, even the story and the conversation isn't particularly impressive, and you can't even garner much interest or empathy for any of the characters from even a narrative perspective.

For a game with such universally stratospheric critical scores, it seems that professionals are ignoring that simple, visceral sense of fun, whether it's a shooting action sequence or even an enjoyable way to stroll around or ride your horse. All I can say as a user is there was no joy or fun from playing this game, and that's really unusual with the typical high quality games we get today.

For me, this is THE game. I realize it's not for everyone, but I enjoy the scenery and the hunting/fishing/etc. Don't take my review for gold as I wasn't a fan of GTA V but did love Redemption and Revolver, but the story is very well done, which is par for the course for a Rockstar game.

"This games story is the best" I have said several times for any game made by Rockstar, They just seem to have a better understanding of how to make people care for their characters they may or may not be rooting for in the end. Red Dead Redemption 2 I would have to say is either as good as the original or worse. now you might be asking "why worse?" Well that doesnt mean its technically"This games story is the best" I have said several times for any game made by Rockstar, They just seem to have a better understanding of how to make people care for their characters they may or may not be rooting for in the end. Red Dead Redemption 2 I would have to say is either as good as the original or worse. now you might be asking "why worse?" Well that doesnt mean its technically terrible that just means i liked more elements from the first game when it came out which Red Dead Redemption was a technical and beautiful marvel filled with a rich cast of characters and story including one of my favorite characters to come out of a Rockstar game "John Marston" Im sorry for blabbering off about the other game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is just as good as the original with even more focus on characters and somewhat not even characters that are apart of the story just random people on the street or people that you might play poker with have emotions, you can specifically bad mouth a random dude on the street and end off with a gun fight or drunken brawl
now this of course is only possible with the technical minds at Rockstar and the hardware we use today. This interaction system allows players to even connect with in game characters that arent even important to the story at all. Now lets talk about Gameplay, the movement in this game is clunky but realistic in fact i havent really ever seen the characters movement in game break with put together animation. like when your character runs towards his horse and jumps on it like nothing with no real broken parts of animation its amazing. The gun play is awesome with the deadeye system making a return once again saving you from tight situations where you could be by yourself fighting close to 10 armed bandits. The game still has a realistic health function with not being able to take more than 20 shots like a tank but you still feel like you are in even more danger with every shot you take. there is a survival type element where you and your horse cant be sitting there taking shots and be running for long periods of time without eating or resting as that is a part of the game, thats right you actually have to consume items to keep your characters health, stamina, deadeye cores ripe for any chance you are in danger. cause if you are low on stamina you will dramatically slow down having to fight your pursuers without being able to run creating a battle that you were trying to run from making even worse now that you are as slow as an ox. Now talking about story progression, the story in the beginning is the slowest part of the game and mostly the worst but best part of it as you get to see characters you knew and new characters you can get to know, but this introduction could take hours to get past but its worth it. Id highly recommend anyone and i mean anyone even if they dont like westerns to give this game a shot, it isnt a perfect 10/10 but its definitly deserving its 9/10 rating.

Such an amazing game, certainly not flawless but a true successor of red dead redemption one. Hopefully online is as good as the first!

    Unquestionably 2018's best game, and an all-time open-world masterpiece. [Christmas 2018, p.89]

It doesn’t matter if you are gamer, a human being, or an alien from another planet; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a title that you just can’t miss. The bar set by RDR2 is so high that even Rockstar itself will probably have a hard time raising it. One of the best releases in the history of digital entertainment.

While it has some notable but minor flaws, it's hard to argue that Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a masterpiece. The end result of the meticulous detail, wonderful writing and stunning looks is an open world that sets a new bar for believability, and a time and place I can't stop thinking about or wanting to be a part of.
