RDR2 is a gem. Although there are so many things to do on the side and a fully-developed multiplayer to dive into, I keep falling back to the main storyline because it's just so good. It is without a doubt the most fun I've had in a video game in years.

I play games to get away from boring reality. This game has boring, time consuming chores, boring slow fishing, boring slow card games, real time theatre shows, slow laborious hunting, slow ass horse riding to get anywhere, slow animated cooking, slow animated cleaning, slow walking in camps. If I wanted to do any of that boring sh1t I would be actually doing it in real life, not playing video games.

I'm only half way through and I have gone from enjoyment at the beginning, to boredom, to actively being frustrated continually while playing the game.
Two guys picked a fight with me in a city, they opened fire with no provocation, I shot them, witnesses run screaming and 10 cops spawn in front of you down every street as you try and get away. finally escape with a $383 bounty now on your head, which takes approx 1000hrs to earn back looting people for .40cents at a time. finally pay off bounty, accidentally knock over random npc in the street and it all begins again.

Yeah the graphics are pretty, but the gameplay is the least fun and satisfaction i have had from a game in a long time.
I'm giving up on it for now. maybe they will patch it and make it a bit more enjoyable.
    Things it needs:
    Fast travel from anywhere.
No bounty, or way more loot so it is not so painful.
Better power curve- there is no progression after about 20%, you have everything decent.
Skippable cutscenes and animations. Faster animations.
More realistic police presence, the law is way too quick to the scene, coordinated, numerous and powerful.
No button press and hold delays, tap in rhythm to gallop everywhere etc, just more user friendly controls.
better inventory, everything is just so clunky and slow.
They seem to have made all the worst, most boring everyday stuff more realistic and slow, but made the law telepathic and able to appear in force anywhere on the map in moments. It takes you longer to wait for your horse to get to you and mount up, than a full posse of lawmen to track you down, even though you are ten a ten minute ride from any town, and start shooting, and when you shoot back, it costs you a fortune, and the cops are suddenly everywhere.
It's a frustrating game. You are apparently supposed to play like a good citizen, but the main story has you shooting up town after town, i just dont get the angle they are trying for. Confusing, aimless and frustrating.

Since TW3's release, I'd yearned for a game that would captivate me as that game did. After experiencing the entire game - and also upgrading from a first gen XBOX One to an XBOX One X, which was a substantial improvement - I awarded RDR2 with the coveted 10/10. The flaws detailed below are still valid, but they're insignificant compared to the game's strengths.

It's a very good game, but it's not perfect, and is therefore not worthy of the coveted 10/10. I'll mostly focus on the parts of the game that either need improvement, or should have been excised from the final product altogether. This is because everyone already knows about the game's high points.

THE HONOR SYSTEM: This is a total mess. It's the same thing as the karma system in the Fallout series. If you do something honorable, you get "good cowboy" points, and the opposite is true if you do somethign dishonorable. The game very much wants you to be a "good cowboy." There are a number of perks awarded to you if your "honor" is high, which mostly consist of discounts in stores, and additional clothing available for purchase at said stores. Given that money is not all that easy to come by in the game (at least for the first half), this is no small perk. The problem with the honor system, however, is that it's extremely finicky, and after not too long it conditions you to avoid confrontation with NPCs (both man and beat) altogether. For example, you see some men arguing at the side of the road, and it looks like it might erupt into gunfire. You intervene by shooting the primary aggresors just as they brandish their firearms. In so doing, you shoot one of their horses, which the game considers dishonorable. You have now lost an entire level of honor. Whereas you once received a 25% discount in stores, you now enjoy merely a 10% discount. What's more, to regain honor is no small feat - it's very, very easy to become dishonorable, but quite tedious and time consuming to attain a high honor level. So when the game forces you to do some mission that requires you to kill dozens of innocent NPCs during the course of an armed robbery, it's a bit of a punch to the gut when the inevitable honor fallout ensues.

AGGRESIVE NPCs: This is somewhat related to my gripe with the "honor system." You go into a bar and some guy picks a fight with you because he's drunk, etc. You'd think that this would be a fun diversion, or maybe even increase your "melee" skillset, or something similiar. Not at all. If he throws the first punch and you beat him to death (or unconscious - it's not clear to me if these guys die or not following a beating), then while you may not have the law on your back, you absolutely will lose honor points. Why? You acted in self-defense, so what's the issue? Who knows. And if you plunder the corpse of valuables afterwards, forget about it...not only will you lose even more honor, but you'll be wanted for "looting." Bonus points if you inadvertenly punch one of the men people in the bar during your justified assault - you'll now be wanted for "unarmed assault," notwithstanding you lack of criminal intent. So you see how this game really only wants you to commit sanctioned acts of violence, i.e., those that are bundled with a mission? Seriously, Arthur Morgan is considerably more placid and peaceful than I am even in my day-to-day life. It's outright bizarre.

LOOTING CORPSES: In addition to what I referenced in the "AGGRESIVE NPCs" paragraph, this also needs some work. Most of the missions involve shooting hoards of NPCs to death. We're talking at least three dozen. Every single one of these corpses can be looted, which yields not insignificant amounts of money, ammo, and other valuables that can be fenced. The problem is, however, your fellow gang members discourage you from looting - they constantly complain and tell you to hurry-up and move over to the next cut-scene trigger mark. You can ignore them, but man...they complain A LOT. It's just annoying, and it makes you feel like there will be some consequence if you don't heed their commands. I don't think there are any consequences - that's just how it makes you feel.

There are a few things that are more minor, such as the fact that animals usually have poor quality pelts, even if you kill them properly. You can eyeball the animal from afar to see if they have a three-star quality - or "perfect" - pelt, but why didn't they just give all animals perfect pelts and leave it up to the player to degrade their quality by utilizing the wrong weapon during the hunt? Who knows. Anyway, it's a great game, but it has some really wonky systems, and it's not clear to me why the developers included these systems in teh final product

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope Rockstar really reads these users reviews and doesn't go by all of the biased early-review stories written by people who benefit from clicks. Possible spoilers here!!

I was the biggest fan of RDR, had no real knowledge of that game before it came out, and don't even like to watch westerns. But the graphics, gameplay, characters and story all blew me away. Became my favorite game of all time, and I was early waiting years for a possible sequel.

I pre-ordered the game like so many others, and like happens so often with other games, this was probably a mistake - not because the game is a total loss, but because it gives gaming publishers a pass for putting out a game that has serious gameplay issues.

Anyway, my feelings echo many of the exact things others have posted; the visuals of the environment, weather, etc. - the immersiveness in the world of RDR2 is incredible. And *some* of the missions and characters are very engaging. The Lenny mission is possibly one of the best missions in a game, ever. Unfortunately, most of the other missions are much worse. They are too close to typical 'fedex' missions, and are very annoying at times due to the wasted time riding out to the mission, or riding back, or the mission requiring loading your horse which already has a valuable skin, etc. Just not thought out well. I also agree that the missions are 100% strictly scripted and it gets annoying real fast. Mission starts; I can't save, I don't know how long it will take, often I waste my buffs and hard earned ammo to kill people and then can't even loot the bodies.

And possibly worst of all are the far-too-many Dutch "trust me I have a plan" (literally), doing stupid thing, "Arther you don't have faith", rinse and repeat.

I still haven't finished, and though I'd love to do all of the missions and experience everything that was put into the game, all of the wasted time has just made it seem drawn out and now I'm just trying to get to the damn ending.

Not a great effort overall in many ways and worse than it's predecessors.

Oh, how I wanted to love this game. I actually signed up to do reviews in Metacritic because of how blah I feel about the game. After 81 hours of playing, this is a game that feels like a chore more than anything else.

    - too much horse. I got the white Arabian and it is fast. The problem with the horse is that aside from walking it is the only way to get to around (sure there is a train and stagecoach for city to city travel) but come on, do I really need to ride a horse for 5 IRL minutes so that I can go the next objective? Sure I get to see the "beautiful game", sure I can always stop and hunt or forage, sure there is always a chance at an ambush, race, or animal attack, but even with all of that. the travel feels daunting. I bet 20% of my game time has been riding a horse and doing nothing else.

    - slow and repetitive animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions). The game has no option to turn these off, so every time I pick up a plant I have to wait 1-2 seconds while the animation plays, same with every other action I do - and it adds up. If I forrage 1000 plants that is 16 minutes of IRL time watching the same animation at 1 second per animation, skin 100 animals that is 5 IRL minutes of watching the same animation (sure the animal in the scen and how the skinning is done varies but after the 20th time it all blurs into - I don't give a damn. Aside from the animations, the slow pace, in general, doesn't really trigger anything outside of frustration and boredom.

    - I feel like the game forces you to play the good guy - it rewards you by doing so (discounts in shops, no bounty hunters to harass you - which is a good thing as most of them are magical bounty hunters with teleporting abilities) and punishes you if you don't. The cost of being a criminal far exceeds the rewards.

These are a few of the constant annoyances. However, the main problem is, that it's not a real open world game. If you focus on the main story you will experience a linear and scripted game with almost no freedom. Every time you try something different the missions will fail - and if you have to repeat the mission many are scripted and you can't skip the slow-ass ride from point a to point b because the NPC has some important story to tell you about how their balls hurt when they were riding wagons in the winter (I don't care). If you don't do the missions or follow the story, well then you get what I got - 80 hours of slowly realizing how laborious the game is and how unfulfilling it is to continue playing.

In summary, RDR2 is an average game in an open world sandbox if you ignore the story and do whatever you want. However, doing whatever you want too early in the game limits you because you can't get some gear or rewards until you follow the storyline so then you end up with getting forced to follow the story just to get improvements you want. If you love the main story, the game provides maybe 15-20 hours of a very scripted and cinematic game with high production value. Both parts have average gameplay and problematic controls. The only highlights and reasons to play the game are its great graphics, atmosphere and story. Which for me was not enough to want to finish the game or keep playing, TBH even with my goal of not buying new games until I complete the ones I have, I will likely call RDR2 completed and not go back.

I very often had the feeling that I am playing a re-skin of GTA V - this game is nearly 6 years old! There were games around 2000 that had better game play. The beautiful looking world does not respond or interact to players actions. Most of the time the player feels like the environment just there to look good. Weather does not have any effect on the players actions. Everyone who played games like Zelda BOTW knows what it means, if it is raining and you are trying to make fire. What about moving slower in snow? In RDR2 the weather does not have ANY effect on the environment.

Also the realism is a big problem in this game. Every review addresses the realism as the best part of this game and I think it is not. There are many situations were the realism is very close to reality, but the problem with too much realism is that you get very sensitive for things that do not act like in reality. There are several examples for this: riding on your horse for some time will make Arthur stow his guns in the saddle. Now if you jump of the horse you will instantly have your guns on the back again, but if you get into a gun fight while you are riding and you jump of the horse, you have to pick up all your weapons by your self!!! Another thing for example is that if you go to the receiver at emerald ranch to sell you plundered stuff in the night, he will stand in its shop but the interaction menu tells you you have to wait until tomorrow to be able to sell things... why is he even in his shop when he does not buy things from you????

I don't want to get too much into detail here since everything is already mentioned in the other reviews. In my opinion this game is no that innovative as it is presented by Rockstar and the bigger review websites. Most of the game is very retrogressive. For each mechanic in this game there are other games that do those mechanics way better! It is too slow, too time consuming and in no means rewarding for the spend time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to 2010s red dead redemption where you play as Arthur Morgan, part of Dutches gang…
If you’ve played the first red dead you know things go sour, so Red Dead Redemption 2 sets out to tell that story…
Much like the first red dead, red dead redemption 2 sets out to immerse you with not only its environment and storytelling but its mechanincs as well.. much like a team ico game..
everything seems tedious, but its on purpose… the game wants you to feel completely in control at all times.. and its one of the things I love most about the red dead series,, you have to manually tap a button to gallop and go faster for example, you have to take care of your horse to increase its stats, it sets out to place you into another world, another time period.. youre essentially living another life away from your own… Red Dead Redemption feels that real…
This tedium is also this games downfall…
I loved both red dead redemption and red dead 2… however Red Dead Redemption 2 is nowhere near as enjoyable for me as the first… though they feel like vastly different games…
Red Dead 2 isnt about exciting events taking place, no cinnmeatic moments, you feel like a member of the gang, contributing, doing jobs and collecting cash to upgrade around camp…
and everything about this game is mythotical and slow, theres no fast travel in the way modern games have spoiled us with… you have to ride from place to place, take in this games world, run into its inhabitants and predators, thankfully this game is gorgeous at times, but I feel all the hype around how good this game looks is a little out of proportion…
infact I feel most of red dead redemption 2 is generally overrated…
but back to being slow… this is red dead 2s greatest asset and greatest flaw…
for the first 20 out of 60hrs of this games campaign, I loved the slow pace living life as a cowboy… but I felt the story and game just drug on forever.. exciting things rarely happening… never really having fun…
red dead redemption just isn’t a fun game…
and that’s okay.. it’s a different kind of experience… again.. back to the point of wanting you to feel like youre living another life, that’s what I felt.. I was immersed into this world…
but by the games final chapter I was just so bored, so uninterested on how anything turned out other than arthurs story…
I just wish the campaign was fast and fun like the first games campaign… while everything around it stayed a little slower..
just everything began to feel pretadictable, too samey… don’t get me wrong there are great moments throughout your 60 hour journey… but so much of it feels like needless padding, and things ive already done a thousand times… making me ultimately feel like the game over stays its welcome with the story…
everything this campaign set out to achieve couldve been done in under 20 hours easily…
there was no reason to drag it out other than a selling point of a long campaign that youll probably get too bored to even see through to the end…
if somehow youre still craving red dead redemption after that 60 hours there is an online mode currently in beta, but I just wasn’t interested in doing more of the same with a silent protagonist with my friends online…. Sure I don’t have friends, but that’s not the point…
the campaign itself had a hard enough time keeping my interest..
that said I actually Love Red Read Redemption 2…
I was just over it before it was over…
Youll get your moneys worth here… but youll probably end up searching for the ending on youtube.
I give Red Dead Redemption 2
    an 8.5/10

The storytelling in this game is some of Rockstar's best work. The "morality" meter at the bottom of the screen caries Arthur into what kind of person the player chooses, an evil one or a good one, and you will pay for it in the end. As of gameplay, Rockstar Games have successfully found the perfect balance of storytelling and action, as each mission is packed with an even amount of conversations, cutscenes and horse riding, gunfights. However, I rate this game a 9 instead of a 10 due to the over excessive amount of "realistic" aspects to this game, that generally just lower the quality of life aspects. For example, when picking up items/looting bodies, you must loot each individually, one by one. Another example is how if your horse is not in range, you cannot call it, and you are stuck having to walk or steal another horse. Nevertheless, this game is definitely in my top 5 games I've ever played, and for anyone who enjoys RPGs a must-play. Expand

    Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 is a all round good game but after playing through the first chapter and a bit of the second i found that all be it a beautiful game its very very slow and in my opinion is not a £60 game and it`s better if you wait until the price drops.

My disappointment in Red Dead Redemption 2 stems from the assumption that the sheer extravagance of its excesses bears some sort of inherent artistic value. You're just left with a labyrinthine chore of an open world that repeatedly undermines its own intent.

RDR2's gorgeous expanse is irredeemably cheapened by a mistaken belief that "more" equates to "depth." All of the detail is wonderful and beautiful to experience and look at, but once the novelty wears off, a creeping, empty joylessness settles in instead. Throwing in pointless **** is not what makes a virtual world feel like a lived-in experience. RDR2's selective realism shatters all illusion that its obsequious fetish for detail contributes to immersion in its story.

I'm a PC gamer but bought an XBox One X as a 4K bluray player, it came bundled with RDR2 so gave it a go after reading glowing reviews. But I cannot understand the praise, it's an OK game, nothing special.

    Pros:
Well told story, albeit consisting of rather cliched western fodder
    Well fleshed out characters
An incredibly well-detailed world, very strong in this area
The animals in the game are superbly realised and make the world feel truly alive
Pretty good graphics for a console, doesn't seem too sluggish on XB1X in 4K HDR mode, but it's not as amazing as people are saying

    Cons:
Game is not really open world, story is on rails as are the side-quests. If you go off piste you fail quests, you cannot apply any creative thinking to the problems. So rather a dull experience.
Appalling control system; unintuitive, unresponsive, inconsistent use of controls, makes the game not worth playing for me. It's like playing something from 20 years ago on a PS2
Silly and laborious systems for inventory, weapons selection and item use, you end up fiddling about so much with the menus that your objective has run off by the time you're ready to do what you need to.
Endless cut scenes that take you out of the game and ruin the flow of play, you just think you are watching a bad 1970's cowboy film in Sunday afternoon
Constant talking from all around you that prevents you just getting on with things. I really could not care less if some dumb broad thinks I ought to take a bath or not. It's just tedious small-talk that does not move the game on. Seriously, whoever wrote the script for this really needs to understand those two key story-telling maxims, 'less is more' and 'show not tell'
Weak combat system that makes you avoid combat rather than actively embrace it
The game is a horse-riding simulator. It's so dull; ride, ride, ride, then spend 2 minutes doing some boring activity, then ride, ride, ride back, as there's no decent fast travel system. So you just ride over the same boring dirt tracks over and over and over and over. Yeah we get it, you're a cowboy, you ride a horse. Wow. Big deal.
Overly anal attention to detail about the most petty activities; picking weapons from a saddle bag, watching you skin the same animals hundreds of times over and over and over. You even have to make coffee to drink, seriously, this is the type of tedious activity I do at home before leaving for work, I don't want to spend my gaming time reliving the less exciting moments of my normal life. Playing this game is often like having a second job, but one that's actually less fun than my actual career.

Main issue is the control system, it's so bad, I can't believe they released the game like this. I use an XB1 controller a lot on the PC as it's the best controller going IMO, so I am used to gamepads, but I have not seen a gamepad control system implemented this badly in decades.

So a bit of a mixed bag, but if I'd paid for the game, I'd not be pleased. Can't see me moving to consoles for my gaming if this is the best that's on offer.

A great technical compartment, fantastic single story but... multiplayer way worse than first game.

It's realistic but to a fault. The game is just beyond boring. You're literally going to spend half your playtime riding around on a horse. The world looks nice, but when you're forced to admire it for 50 hours in order to get through the game, that's unacceptable. Combine that with the ridiculous online microtransactions, and this is one of the worst games I've ever played. Avoid!

Personally i find this the best game ever! Nintendo Seal Of Approval in my book! I absolutely love this game and have been playing almost every day since the day of the release. Wish i had known more about it before buying the regular edition as i now would have wanted to get the ultimate extended über edition. I guess it's all about taste / style. I think the controls are great and fit with the pace and everything. It's gonna be a disappointing 2019 for sure as there won't be much to even come close to Red Dead Redemption 2! If it does that would mean some game-company's finally are starting to understand what we the players want. Expand

Online: although a bit laggy and the occasional glitch occurs it’s always good fun to start a town shoot out or steal a stage coach with your friends, although there’s not as many random encounters in online it still has a little story in it as well, it could be better but then again at the time of this review it’s good for a beta. ascetics: beautiful, just beautiful I have no words except it looks Gorgeous. Controls: nothing much to say here well all know by now rockstars controls aren’t the best but you do get use to it over time. Overall this game have its flaws but either way IT IS a masterpiece maybe not all will like it, but I definitely think this is worth the $100 AUD and would recommend for anyone Expand

    Unquestionably 2018's best game, and an all-time open-world masterpiece. [Christmas 2018, p.89]

It doesn’t matter if you are gamer, a human being, or an alien from another planet; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a title that you just can’t miss. The bar set by RDR2 is so high that even Rockstar itself will probably have a hard time raising it. One of the best releases in the history of digital entertainment.

While it has some notable but minor flaws, it's hard to argue that Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a masterpiece. The end result of the meticulous detail, wonderful writing and stunning looks is an open world that sets a new bar for believability, and a time and place I can't stop thinking about or wanting to be a part of.
